Tomi Shishido was a Japanese man born in Japan who said his first words at two weeks of age. He was walking at three months old and was reading as well as writing by his first birthday. By age 4, he had established himself as one of the five best painters in modern Japan. On his sixth birthday, he had composed his first opera and attempted suicide for the second time. When he was 13 years old, he had devised a mathematical formula that proved without question the existence of God and had discovered that he was a Mutant. It was his Mutant power that led to the television networks to refer him as the Gorgon. During the next four years, he began to operate a Mutant death-cult by the name of Dawn of the White Light whereupon he subjected Japan to a series of relentless terrorist attacks. At age eighteen, he searched for something darker and sought out the Hand. (Wolverine v3 #26)

Wolverine

A plot was made to kidnap the son of Ichiro who was a cousin of the deceased Mariko Yashida where the boy was held for ransom. This drew the attention of Wolverine who came to Japan to save the boy where he beat a horde of armed men and ninja sent to stop him. However, he was ambushed by the Gorgon who badly injured Logan and revealed that the kidnapped boy had been killed where his remains were sent to pigs. (Wolverine v3 #20)

Grandmaster of the Hand

The broken fragments of the Gorgon were later gathered by Baron Strucker who took them to the island of Shikoku that was the site of the Second City of the Twilight Dawn and a resurrection temple of the Hand. He then massacred many of the temple's ninjas in order to force the Grandmaster to resurrect the casket containing Shishido. The power of the resurrection was so great that it cost the life of the Grandmaster with the Gorgon taking his position as the new leader of the Hand. He was then inducted into the ranks of the re-formed Hydra High Council that looked to take over the world. (Secret Warriors v1 #2) During this time, he was approached by the Kraken who offered him the Godkiller sword. (Secret Warriors v1 #11)

Gorgon was later among various leaders of different organizations that rallied under Norman Osborn after he was freed from the Raft and headed the rogue H.A.M.M.E.R. organization. He was convinced to follow Osborn in uniting their respective forces to take over the world and removing the Avengers as their only opposition. Around this time, Norman was looking to establish a new team of Dark Avengers where he took the identity of Wolverine among them. (New Avengers v2 #18)

Grant Ward by this point was working for Gorgon in acquiring the Coulson Protocols to get tactics to defeat Earth's various heroes. (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. v1 #5)

Back in Japan, he decided to make a move to forcibly take over Clan Yashida with the aid of the new Scarlet Samurai. This involved an attack on the corporate headquarters of the Yashida Corporation and attacking its leader Shingen Harada. Numerous Hand assassins were killed with ease by the Silver Samurai but they were a distraction to allow the Scarlet Samurai to strike Shingen from behind. (Old Man Logan v2 #31)

House of X

Tomi's turn in the tournament then came up where he was set to battle the White Sword of Arakko. The Swordbreaker dispatched warriors among his 100 champions to fight his foe and if the Gorgon beat them then he would fight his opponent. At first, Shishido dispatched a lone warrior but the White Sword started sending more and more in order to test Gorgon's skill where he managed to slay each of them until he was overwhelmed by their number. This left him with serious injuries and exhausted though he managed to nearly equalise the score in Krakoa's favour. It was then that the White Sword entered into the fight himself and he was impressed by the Gorgon's skill. He offered to resurrect him if he was slain by making him one of his champions.
