History

The Halo Array were large titanic megastructures created by the ancient civilization known as the Forerunners during the height of their society. During their rule in the Milky Way Galaxy, the Forerunner Ecumene came under assault from an extragalactic force known as the Flood. To combat this danger, the Builders in the Ecumene were responsible for the building the Halos to combat the parasitic Flood. It was believed by the Forerunners that the only way to fight this threat was by depriving their foe of their food source namely organic life. Construction of the Arrays began one hundred millennia ago at the Ark located outside the Milky Way Galaxy though their completion was delayed by factions within the Forerunners. This allowed for the implementation of the Conservation Measure by the Librarian where she sought to catalogue all life in the galaxy so that it could be re-seeded on their respective homeworlds after the Halo's were activated. When the time came, twelve of the Halo rings were built at the greater Ark though their size meant transportation to their target zones were prohibitive due to the enormous temporal reconciliation debts made by moving them through slipspace. Thus, the lesser Ark was made to build an additional seven rings that were to be transported to their sites.

Though the Flood was destroyed, samples of the parasite were retained in science facilities on-board the Halo's in an effort at finding a cure for infection. This was because the Forerunners knew that more of the Flood existed outside the galaxy and that the threat was not fully eliminated and thus hoped the study of the organism could eventually bring about a cure or immunity.

During the Human-Covenant War, the U.S.S. Pillar of Autumn managed to escape the destroyed colony of Reach and made a blind jump that resulted in them encountering the Halo ring.

Overview

Each of these titanic structures were effectively fortress world's and were ringworld weapons. Despite this being the case, their interior surface was habitable and could be used to provide sanctuary to a wide range of life.

A teleportation grid that was dpread throughout Halo that allowed rapid movement across the large structure.

When activated, the Array had an effective range of 25,000 light years but when coupled with the other Halo's it was able to generate a collective pulse which encompassed the entire galaxy. This allowed them to wipe the galaxy of life in order to starve the Flood of biomass. A tactical pulse could be initiated that wiped out nearby life in the local environment such as a Flood infestation.

Management of a Halo Array was done so by a construct that was typically a Monitor. However, deployment of the Halo's pulse required the use of a device known as the Activation Index.
