Biography

Hanzo Shimada (Japanese: シマダ・ハンゾー Hepburn: Shimada Hanzō) was the son of Sojiro Shimada and the older brother of Genji. They were the heads of the Shimada family that were a clan of assassins who were established centuries ago where over time they built a vast criminal empire from their homestead in Hanamura. This allowed them to grow in power as they profited from lucrative trade in arms and the sale of illegal substances. As the eldest son of the family head, he had a duty to succeed his father and rule over the Shimada empire where from a young age he trained for that role. Hanzo was shown to had a natural aptitude towards leadership along with an innate understanding of both strategy and tactics. Following the death of his father, the elders of the clan instructed Hanzo to rein in his younger brother who had a more carefree and wayward personality with some seeing this as a weakness. Thus, Hanzo spoke to his sibling in an effort that this would see them both rule the Shimada empire. However, Genji refused to kill and be involved in the clan's criminal activities with this breaking Hanzo' heart who saw it as a rejection of their father's legacy. This led to Hanzo being forced to kill his younger brother who was left for dead. Unknown to him, Genji had actually survived but was badly injured when he was found by Overwatch. Upon learning this, Hanzo's heart was broken and he himself began to reject his father's legacy leading to him abandoning the clan and abandoning the use of the sword in favour of the bow. This act led to his access to the family's finances being revoked and for his betrayal the clan declared him to be an enemy where they sent assassins to eliminate him. For the next 10 years, he travelled the world where he honed his skills as a warrior in an attempt to restore his honor and put the ghosts of his past to rest.

Overview

Personality and attributes

Hanzo strived to be a warrior without peer. Tough skilled in using a sword, he had sworn off using such a weapon. He also came to consider crossbows to be 'toys for children'.

He believed that compassion had no place in battle. His life led to him developing a cynical view on the nature of the world.

This led to him believing that every death brought honour and through honour there was a opportunity for redemption.

Powers and abilities

From a young age, he was trained to be the successor of the Shimada clan where he demonstrated an innate understanding over leadership, strategy and tactics. In addition, he was a natural prodigy in martial arts, sword-fighting and in the use of the bow. His acrobatic skills meant that he was capable of scaling walls which he could use to gain entry to a site, escape enemies or find a better vantage point. He came to be trained in the use of the sword by the blacksmith Asa Yamagami.

Using his Storm Bow, he was able to nock and fires an arrow at his target. He could fire several arrows instantly though this was done so at reduced damage.

He made use of special arrows such as one that contained a sonar tracking device. Any enemy within its detection radius was visibly marked making them easier for Hanzo and his allies to hunt down.

One of his most powerful attacks was the ability to summon a Spirit Dragon that travelled through the air in a line. It passes through walls in its way where it devoured any enemies it encountered in its path.
