Biography

Heimdall

When the Beyonders were destroying all of reality, Heimdall witnessed the clash of two different Earths and the assembly of Asgard's various enemies against them. He reported his findings to Allfather Odin and later witnessed a future King Loki release Jormungandr where he led Hel's forces against Asgard. (Loki: Agent of Asgard v1 #14) Following the events on Battleworld, he resumed his duties as guardian of the Bifrost Bridge where he stood silently as Cul Borson's Thunder Guard battled the new Thor. As she was overpowered, Heimdall intervened and used his powers to send her to Alfheim whereupon he surrendered to the Thunder Guard to be placed in Asgardia's prison cells. (Mighty Thor v2 #2)

When the War of the Realms reached Midgard, Heimdall sought out the ruined fragments of the Rainbow Bridge in order to restore it so that the realms could create a united front against Malekith and his allies. This saw him confiscate the Bifrost shard that powered the Asgard's Reachs interstellar drive that used by Angela. (Asgardians of the Galaxy v1 #8) Heimdall then appeared on Earth to help the new Valkyrie Jane Foster when he was mortally wounded by Bullseye who had come to wield Dragonfang. The villain was ultimately defeated by Jane who was forced to destroy the blade he was wielding. (Valkyrie: Jane Foster v1 #2) The wounded Heimdall then was ready to be taken to the afterlife but refused Valhalla and wanted to be taken to a new unknown land. Thus, Jane decided to take him on the journey as they went through numerous dimensions until they reached the Far Shore where Heimdall departed for a new existence in the afterlife past that point. (Valkyrie: Jane Foster v1 #3)

Alternate Versions

  • In Infinity Wars: Iron Hammer v1 #1 (2018), an alternate world was created when Gamora using the Infinity Stones used its powers to merge various individuals with one another leading to Iron Man along with Thor combined into a single entity that had his own unique backstory. On this world, Eitri the Weapon-Smith aided Sigurd Stark when the pair were captive of the Dark Elves by crafting him a rune-carved set of Iron Man Armor to escape their capture. The suit contained an on-board artificial intelligence added by Stark that was designated Heuristic Enhanced-Imaging Macro-Digital Awareness for Logic and Logistics (H.E.I.M.D.A.L.L.).

In other media

Television

  • In The Marvel Super Heroes, Heimdall made an appearance in the animated series in "The Trap of Loki" where he was passing by the tree that held the imprisoned Loki. The spell that kept the trickster trapped could only be lifted if a tear was shed and Loki used his power to manipulate a leaf to brush by the passing Heimdall's eye to cause him to shed an involuntary tear. This act allowed Loki to be freed from his trap and he sought to get vengeance against Thor.
  • In The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes, Heimdall made a number of appearances in the animated television series where he was voiced by actor J.B. Blanc.

Films

  • In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Heimdall made a number of appearances in the shared continuity setting.
    • In Thor, the character made an appearance in a supporting role where he was played by actor Idris Elba. He was Asgardian watcher that stood at his observatory and controlled the Bifrost Bridge. Despite his skill, he did not perceive a group of Frost Giants entering into Asgard and making their way to Odin's vaults. This chain of events led to Thor, Loki, Sif and the Warriors Three asking Heimdall to keep their departure to Jotunheim a secret as they sought retribution. When Thor was banished, Odin entered into the Odinsleep leading to Loki placing himelf on the throne with Heimdall forcibly and reluctantly accepting him as his ruler. However, he observed a liberal interpretation of Loki's orders and did not report when Sif along with the Warriors Three went to Midgard to warn Thor. As a result of his actions, Loki dismissed Heimdall from his service thus releasing him from his vows to the throne and allowing him to strike at Loki. Loki in turn used the Casket of Ancient Winters to freeze the watcher of the Bifrost Bridge. He was freed when Thor returned and defeated his adopted brother but their battle had damaged the Rainbow Bridge. Thor stood with Heimdall asking if the link with Earth was forever severed with the watcher showing that it was regenerating. The Odinson later asked what Jan Foster was doing to which Heimdall chuckled stating that she was still looking for Thor.
    • In Thor: Ragnarok, Heimdall returned in the third instalment in the live-action film trilogy where he was once again portrayed by actor Idris Elba. When Loki in the guise of Odin took the throne, he declared Heimdall a traitor forcing him to flee from his position as guardian of the Bifrost with his position taken over by Skurge. When Hela took over Asgard, he went to claim back his sword that was the key to the Bifrost preventing the goddess of death from conquering the realms. He then began to save the remaining Asgardians to take them to shelter to prevent Hela from killing them. When Thor called on him, Heimdall used his power to brief the Odinson of the danger and informed him that the god of thunder was trapped on Sakaar where he informed him which portal to use to return to Asgard.

  • In Marvel: Avengers Alliance, Heimdall appeared in the video game where his backstory said he was the brother to Sif and ally to Thor. He was described as the guardian of the Bifrost Bridge and the eternal sentry of Asgard.
