Biography

Origin

Helena Sandsmark

Helena studied archeology at Harvard University under Julia Kapatelis, and was one of her brightest students. After graduation, she participated in several digs around the world, including one in Greece, where she made an important discovery that made her famous in her profession. (Wonder Girl v1 #4)

She later came to work at Gateway City's Museum of Cultural Antiquities where she was a Professor over the Greek exhibits. At some point, she had met Julia Kapatelis who spoke of her encounters with Wonder Woman to Helena and that the superheroine preferred to be called by her true name of Diana. (Wonder Woman v2 #105)

At Elias High School for Girls, Helena Sandsmark attempted to get her daughter Cassie admitted back into the school. However, its principal refused as she felt that Cassie’s identity as Wonder Girl being an open secret was too much of a risk. This led to Cissie King-Jones demanding that Cassie be allowed as the newest student or she would leave the school. She reasoned that this would be a huge blow to Elias High School as Cissie’s reputation as the star archer of the institution would be gone and thus affecting its prestige. Ultimately, the principal relented and agreed for Cassie to be re-admitted but on the condition that she did not use her powers on campus. (Teen Titans v3 #7)

Post-Flashpoint

Following the Flashpoint, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events.

In other media

Television

In Young Justice, Dr. Helena Sandsmark appeared in the setting of the animated television series where she was voiced by actress Mae Whitman. Helena went to the Premiere Building with Eduardo Dorado Sr. and Jay Garrick in order to pull Cassie, Ed and Bart from the Outsiders. Helena was particularly concerned about the extra danger they had put themselves in by becoming public heroes, though she had reluctantly supported Cassie being a member of a covert team. Eventually the young heroes convinced their guardians that little had really changed, and that if they could not stand up for meta-humans, then no one could, and all three went on to publicly support the Outsiders.

Video games

  • In Young Justice: Legacy, Dr. Helena Sandsmark appeared as a non-playable character in the video-game tie-in to the animated television series where she was voiced by actress Mae Whitman. Helena is an archeologist and teacher. She raised her daughter on her own. Her work on Greek architecture was of interest to Aquaman and Wonder Woman. She was abducted from a dig site in Olympia in February 2015, after she had uncovered a strange Babylonian artifact that she felt was out of place. The Team was sent to investigate, and discovered Sandsmark had left behind a tablet device. She had saved a message on it, detailing what little she had discovered of her abductors. After locating all the fragments for the Light, she discovered she was to be taken to Gotham City. She left another message on her device, hoping it would lead to her release. She was held by Riddler in an empty circus tent. Nightwing and his squad eventually found her and released her. Sandsmark was pleased, as she had feared her messages would not be heard. Following her release, she continued to work with the Team. She discovered that Riddler had set her up to find the original artifact, and had been closely monitoring her. She also discovered the third artifact they got was a fake.
  • In DC Legends, Helena Sandsmark's Journal appeared as an item equipped to Wonder Girl in the setting of the mobile video game.
