History

Hermetic Order of the Blue Rose were a secret society of magical users who harnessed mystical powers for different purposes regardless of whether it was good or bad.

Overview

In appearance, the Hermetic Order of the Blue Rose was shown to be a secret society that was considered a myth and hoax. (Episode: Hell Week, Part 1)

Their existence was said to be an urban legend to the rest of the world with many presidents, captains of industry and celebrities having been members of the Order.

The Order is divided into different chapters, under the jurisdiction of a Temple Magus. There are five chapter in the United States besides the ones in Brazil, France and Germany. Each chapter have about 100 members. The base of each one is the temple. Although the rumor is that the temple of Belgrave is in the basement of the university's library, it is actually in an old house abandoned in the vicinity, hidden behind a secret entrance in the wall.

Ranks within the order included:

  • Grand Magus :
  • Councilor :
  • Temple Magus :
  • Magistratus :
  • Medicum :
  • Acolyte : the lowest-ranked member of the Order who once they were initiated was assigned a higher-ranking tutor that instructed them in magic and also assigned them tasks.
  • Neophyte : these were young people selected from the student body of Belgrave University to be considered members of the Order. (Episode: Hell Week, Part 1)

Recruitment saw seven individuals chosen where they were given a trial with only three selected to be inducted into the order. (Episode: Hell Week, Part 1)

In order to become a member of the Hermetic Order, neophytes must endure rigorous testing to ensure they are the correct fit for the Order. If a neophyte fails at any point, their memory was then erased using Pulveris memoria. The trials included:

  • Step I - Selection Test : each candidate is hand-picked and vetted by the Chancellor, and current temple magus, of Belgrave University. In rare occurrences, higher members of the Order intervene to either remove or add potential neophytes. The Neophytes are called with a note and a blue rose.
  • Step II - Subservient Test : the neophytes must complete a subservience test, which consisted of finding hidden gold coins in dangerous places. The location of the gold coin is hidden behind riddles and clues that they must decipher. The neophytes cannot give away their coin or reveal the location of a coin. Next, the remaining neophytes are presented with a list of things they must either complete or obtain. Jack Morton's list included a gun and cocaine. Only three Neophytes were chosen to be admitted and become Acolytes.
  • Step III - Observance Test :

Initiation into the Hermetic Order is rather simple. All members of the chapter gather in black robes wearing faceless masks. The acolytes who have been chosen wear white robes. The leader of the chapter speaks the acolyte's name and presents them with a black robe and faceless mask. They ask the acolyte if they are ready to heed the call. When the acolyte says yes and accepts the role, they are officially members of the Order.

Their motto was said to be, ""Silence. Subservience. Observance." (Episode: Hell Week, Part 1)

One of their bases of operations and recruitment sites was Belgrave University.
