History

The Intelligencia were a team consisting of intelligent supervillains that banded together by the Leader on Earth. He came to assemble likeminded individuals with him first approaching the Wizard whereupon he recruited Egghead, Mad Thinker, Red Ghost and also had Doctor Doom as an ally. They kept their existence a secret from the world with them secretly helping recover one another and aiding other supervillains whilst remaining seemingly unaffiliated with any group. Thus, they were responsible for helping reconstitute numerous villains who had died over the years and even ensured the release of other Intelligencia members. Years ago, they secretly infiltrated the Eternal city of Olympia in order to steal information from its library. After acquiring Alexandrian library tomes, they came to learn of further knowledge in Wakanda which they planned to strike. The Intelligencia faced its first set-back when Egghead was killed fighting the Avengers as part of his own agenda. With his loss, the group were lacking an intel-level mind for their Wakanda mission with the Leader thus recruiting M.O.D.O.K. into their ranks. They conducted their mission in Wakanda where they left a device to detect tachyon transmissions with this eventually registering the arrival of the Beyonder. After the cosmic beings defeat, the Intelligencia operated in the fallout where they studied the Venom Symbiote and even recovered the deceased Betty Ross who the Leader intended to revive as leverage. Afterwards, they learnt of the Illuminati who had exiled the Hulk to another world in the hope he would find peace elsewhere with this then followed by the Civil War in the wake of the Superhuman Registration Act. The Leader had calculated that the Hulk would return in a greater rage than ever before with the Intelligencia then continuing their Alexandria mission by recovering ancient texts with their next goal being in the library of Atlantis. With their mission complete, they had thus gathered all the lost knowledge in the world and transported the remaining texts for safety in the Latverian library. However, upon delivery, Doctor Doom betrayed the Intelligencia as he intended to claim the knowledge for himself and banished them from Latveria. A defeated Leader then returned to base alone in order to think where he was approached by M.O.D.O.K. who wanted to continue the Intelligencia's operations. He stated that now that they had recovered the knowledge the next goal was eliminating intellectual rivals. In addition, he determined that the Hulk was indeed returning to Earth and revealed that with the Alexandrian knowledge he had determined a way of leeching the energy from the Green Goliath that could be used to empower an agent that could become their Red Hulk enforcer. (Fall of the Hulks: Alpha v1 #1)

Thus, they came to commandeer Gamma Base where they disguised it as a S.H.I.E.L.D. facility that was staffed by agents who were actually L.M.D.s. It was used as a site to take the defeated Hulk at the conclusion of World War Hulk where the creature was secretly siphoned of energy that was used to power the experiments that transformed Thunderbolt Ross into the Red Hulk. (Hulk v2 #23)

The team then began to secretly targeted the individuals deemed as the eighteen smartest people on the planet. After acquiring Reed Richards, they had the Red Ghost attack Wakanda in order to kidnap T'Challa. (Hulk v2 #20)

They later registered an unknown extraterrestrial energy source ad discovered a crashed Spaceknight on the scene. Spider-Woman Jessica Drew was also investigating the scene on behalf of S.W.O.R.D. with the Intelligencia capturing her and intending to interrogate her for information. During this time, they studied the Spaceknight when their base was attacked by the Avengers attempting to recover their team mate. It was then that the Spaceknight activated where it was revealed that it contained the mind of Ultron who reformed the body into a new form for himself. He then escaped the scene with the Avengers having managed to capture the Intelligencia but worrying about the threat posed by Ultron now that he had returned to Earth. (Avengers v4 #12.1)

The group later built the Zero Cannon which they tested on the Winter Guard where they sent the Russian superteam into orbit to defeat them. At the time, the Chameleon had been dispatched to infiltrate their ranks where he was disguised as Klaw. He deactivated their defences to allow the Sinister Six to attack the Intelligencia Geo-Base 1 situated in the North Pole. This was an effort by Doctor Octopus to acquire the Zero Cannon for his own use where he defeated M.O.D.O.K. where he forced his opponent to surrender and depart the base. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #676)

After Doom became the new Iron Man, he began targeting various supervillains around the world including Diablo and the Mad Thinker. Upon learning of this, the Wizard sought to reform the Intelligencia in order to fight Doom but his foe appeared on the scene to attack him. (Infamous Iron Man v1 #6)

In the wake of the Leviathon attack, the Intelligencia re-formed with the goal of enslaving giant Kaiju for their needs and targeted Kid Kaiju. (Monsters Unleashed v2 #1)

Overview

In appearance, the Intelligencia appeared as a group of villains all of whom were highly intelligent intel-level minds that banded together to conquer the world. As a team, they were said to gather in secret and only sporadically in order to achieve mutually shared goals. Despite that, they were not really a team but rather an irregular collective that believed in sharing information and when necessary to even take it. They believed in saving knowledge from those that did not deserve it. Ultimately, they were not a combative group as they simply stockpiled intelligence that would serve them in the future. They worked to recover one another and even offered their services in reviving other supervillains. (Fall of the Hulks: Alpha v1 #1)

The group had built a number of devices and technology that included the:

  • Zero Cannon : built using M.O.D.O.K.s knowledge and the innate powers of the Red Ghosts apes, it could warp Earth's magnetic poles and any target could be forced into orbit. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #676)
