Biography

Origin

Wearing the Scarab in Blue Beetle v7 #1.

Jaime Reyes was born in El Paso, Texas as the eldest son of Alberto Reyes and Bianca Reyes with him having a younger sister Milagro Reyes. (Blue Beetle v7 #1)

He was at school when an explosion occurred in the sky as the planet fell under a Crisis event. (Infinite Crisis v1 #3)

In the night, the Scarab activated where it crawled over to him and bonded of Jaime in his sleep. (Blue Beetle v7 #1)

Seeing the Green Lanterns a threat, the Scarab shunted Jaime into the space between dimensions at the time when the satellite's dimensional stabilizer was destroyed. As a result, he was forced further along in the inter-dimensional space where time operated differently causing him to be lost for an entire year till he could manage to make his way back home. (Blue Beetle v7 #7)

Upon returning to Earth, he made his way home and attempted to sneak back into his house where he startled his family only to learn that he had been missing for an entire year. (Blue Beetle v7 #2) He later revealed the armour to his family who were coming to terms with the fact that Jaime had returned to their life whilst he later attempted to re-connect with his friends Paco and Brenda. (Blue Beetle v7 #3) Whilst researching the Blue Beetle, he encountered Oracle after she accessed his computer with her stating that she wanted to help train him. However, an angry Jaime refused as he believed he was abandoned by the superheroes during the battle with Brother Eye. He was later attacked by Ents sent by the Diviner who had been sent to re-acquire the Scarab. (Blue Beetle v7 #4) He helped save a magical child of one of the Posse members from the villainous Bottom Feeder. (Blue Beetle v7 #5) He joined the Posse to help rescue their captive member Probe only to discover that she wanted to stay at La Dama's prison where she was hiding a number of mystics a number of whom remained. During this time, Jaime discovered that the infamous criminal La Dama was Tia Amparo who was Brenda's aunty who was also aware that Reyes was the Blue Beetle. The two came to a truce where neither decided to attack the other or reveal the others identity for Brenda's sake with La Dama stating that she could help Jaime discover the Blue Beetle's origin through her magical research. However, Peacemaker arrived at the scene where he revealed that the Scarab was not magical but extraterrestrial technology. (Blue Beetle v7 #6) Jaime along with his family and friends went to the site where he returned to Earth in order to remember what happened when he disappeared for a year with Peacemaker confirming his findings that the entity on his back was of alien design. (Blue Beetle v7 #7) Him and Brenda sought out the origins of the Scarab with them tracking down the granddaughter of Dan Garret who was the first Blue Beetle. (Blue Beetle v7 #8) He later learnt how Peacemaker knew about the Scarab and its origins as he had encountered the database that had accompanied the alien artefact. (Blue Beetle v7 #9) Jaime was then at Brenda's home when she accidently activated a Mother Box in her aunt's possession sending her to another world. Using the Scarab, he communicated with the Mother Box and was similarly transported to the world Brenda was sent in order to rescue her. After evading numerous traps on the planet, he discovered an unconscious Brenda in the hands of the New God Lonar. (Blue Beetle v7 #10)

During this time, he encountered a Reach Probe with the Scarab acting scared due to its programming but together they managed to destroy this threat. (Blue Beetle v7 #12) It was then that they had encountered the Reach themselves headed by their Negotiator who claimed that they had come in peace with the Scarab being the gift to their herald who served as a guardian of designated worlds to protect them from themselves. However, in reality, they were conquerors who had taken over tens of thousands of worlds through various means. Jaime was unique as the Scarab had been corrupted by magic in the past that prevented them from taking full control over him. They decided to secretly provoke Jaime to test the Scarab and see if they could regain control which was when Reyes suspicion of the Reach was confirmed with the two becoming enemies. However, there was no proof and the Reach projected themselves as making peaceful contact with Earth whilst they embarked on their schemes. (Blue Beetle v7 #13) He then met Guy Gardner where Jaime believed the Green Lantern was going to attack him but he instead wanted to meet with the new Blue Beetle. Gardner revealed that the Guardians of the Universe were old enemies of the Reach with the two forging a peace treaty to restrict the latter's conquests but they instead began to operate in a more covert manner. Together, Blue Beetle and Guy Gardner arrived in the South Pole where they discovered one of the Reach's dimensionally shifted facilities and were attacked by the Ultra-Humanite who had been hired by the aliens. After being defeated, his body was taken away leaving no trace of Reach involvement thus ensuring that the Reach had not broken the treaty. Upon returning back home, Guy gave some advice to Jaime to encourage him that though he was alone that he could defeat the Reach as Ted Kord had fought foes much more powerful than him by using his mind thus inspiring Reyes. (Blue Beetle v7 #14) In an effort to get help, Reyes sought out S.T.A.R. Labs for aid and to inform a famous superhero about the Reach with this leading to a confrontation with Livewire. (Blue Beetle v7 #15) He was later approached by Traci Thirteen when she sought his aid in fighting the Eclipso possessed Jean Loring. (Blue Beetle v7 #16) Jaime later ended up fighting the supervillain Typhoon where Reyes discovered molecular shifted water molecules caused by the Reach. (Blue Beetle v7 #17) He later travelled to the Luthor Lone Star launch facility that was launching a satellite with anti-Reach tech leading to the aliens dispatching the bounty hunter Lobo to stop it with the Blue Beetle encountering the Teen Titans. (Blue Beetle v7 #18)

He next battled Giganta who was paid to attack La Dama where during the fight Brenda discovered that her aunt was the infamous crime lord. (Blue Beetle v7 #19) Jaime then encountered the new host of the Spectre where at the urging of his father Reyes made peace with Luis Rivas who was responsible for Alberto Reyes getting shot. (Blue Beetle v7 #20) Alongside Danni Garrett, Jaime discovered a set of Reach plans that they had for worlds with the strategy guide detailing their various means they acquire worlds. They also encountered Tovar was a genetic construct of the Reach who was given fake memories that was part of the Reach strategy. During this time, the Blue Beetle discovered the existence of the Reach World-Ripper Stations and the means they conquered their target worlds with Jaime vowing to take the fight to the enemy. (Blue Beetle v7 #21) Jaime takes the fight to the Reach, using the time-warping qualities of the Bleed to attack three of their machines at once. When this fails, Jaime attacks the Reach's flagship, but the Reach use their weapons to attack his home. Jaime's emotional outburst at this attack allows the Reach to shut down the scarab and remove it from Jaime, who is thrown into a holding cell while the scarab is taken for examination, but the scarab transfers its knowledge into Jaime before removal, allowing the young hero to break free. Meanwhile, Jaime's family, having escaped the attack, are protected from further Reach assault by Peacemaker, the Posse, Traci Thirteen, La Dama and later Guy Gardner, Fire and Ice. Attacking several guards and taking their armor, Jaime heads for the engine, forcing the Reach to shut it down which reveals their ship. Once captured and brought to the bridge, Jaime shouts 'Khaji Da!'. (Blue Beetle v7 #23)

Through communion with the Scarab, he learnt the activation word for the entity allowing it to be freed from containment and bond with Jaime again. Together, the dealt heavy damage to the Reach mothership and exposed their plans to Earth. This led to the Negotiator seeking to discharge energy from the mothership to activate the hidden World-Ripper Stations on the planet below to destroy it out of spite. The Blue Beetle confronted the Negotiator and halted the discharge but it caused a build up in the engine that would explode which was going to kill everyone on the vessel. Jaime was ready to sacrifice himself to save his loved ones when at the last second Booster Gold emerged where he took Reyes to safety. Blue Beetle attempted to save the Negotiator who was left behind as the Reach mothership exploded with the remaining aliens claiming it was a rogue operation and allowed to return to their home territory. With the threat passed, Jaime returned back home to El Passo and helped in the rebuilding of the town. (Blue Beetle v7 #25) He took Traci to a family reunion where he also fought the villainous Parasite. (Blue Beetle v7 #26) Whilst on a date with Traci, the pair worked together to fight off demons that were summoned by a trio of boys. (Blue Beetle v7 #27) Reyes then confronted an old foe of Dan Garrett who was a former supervillain named Dr. Mephistopheles. (Blue Beetle v7 #28) As Blue Beetle, he next fought the second Doctor Polaris who was setting himself as the new crime lord in the region. (Blue Beetle v7 #34)

Blue Beetle then worked alongside the Teen Titans at a rocket launch site in Texas where they fought against the Czarnian bounty hunter Lobo. Robin came to note that Blue Beetle had potential but needed further training where they invited him to Titans Tower. (Teen Titans v3 #50) Looking to take them up on their offer, Jaime went to Titans Tower but found it deserted where he began to track the missing Titan's energy signature. (Teen Titans v3 #51) He tracked a signature to Titan's Lair where he found that the Teen Titans had been attacked by a future incarnation of themselves that had become more authoritarian. Whilst there, he found that the Justice League had been trapped by these future Titans where Blue Beetle had to contend with the alternate version of Kid Flash. After defeating this version of Bart Allen, Jaime came to free the captive Justice League. (Teen Titans v3 #52)

The villain Shockwave revealed during his battle with Jaime that Kord Industries is now owned by the 100. He again came into conflict with Kid Devil, who still harbored a grudge against him because of both the future Titans incident and his status with Ravager. Jaime tries to mend fences with Kid Devil, but their squabbling allows Shockwave to escape. During their second battle with him, Kid Devil managed to tap into his demonic powers and partially melts Shockwave's armor, enabling the two boys to defeat him. This seems to squelch the ill feelings between them. Kid Devil asks Jaime if he's heard from Ravager and Jaime replies that he's faced down an entire alien race, but Ravager scares him. Kid Devil finally realizes that Jaime is being sincere and they shake hands and tell each other their real names. Later at Titans Tower Robin offers Jaime full-membership, which Jaime finally feels ready to accept. (Teen Titans v3 #61)

Whilst at the school dance with Traci 13, the event was interrupted by the arrival of the Khaji Da Revolutionary Army that consisted of Reach Scarabs that had risen up against their masters and waged a war against their host race. Despite their approach, the KDRA was hostile to the Blue Beetle and attacked him. During the fight, Nadia, part of Jaime's tech support, is killed. Taking the fight into orbit, Jaime has the scarab hack into and deactivate the KDRA, but deactivating itself for 27 days in the process. The negotiator quickly recovers and Jaime is forced to take him on a kamikaze dive to the Earth's surface. The impact kills the negotiator and badly hurts Jaime, although the scarab put up a shield that protected him from the brunt of the impact. Over a period of weeks, Jaime and the scarab slowly recover. The scarab of the negotiator had, unbeknownst to Jaime, been recovered by Hector, Jaime's other tech support, who, as he left the country, used the negotiator's name "Djo Zha" which a stewardess confuses with "Joshua", indicating that he had bonded with it. (Blue Beetle v7 #36)

The Titans and Teen Titans managed to disable the T-Wing and crash it into the East River without anyone getting injured. Ravager was stowed away on the T-Wing, and told the Titans she waned to help them stop her brother without him getting killed. She also argued with Wonder Girl when she saw Bombshell on the team. Ravager wanted to know why she caught hell for being a former traitor if they’d let other ex-villains on the team. Jericho possessed Raven and spirited away his sister. He told her he was trying to kill he Titans, but only because of the voices in his head. He asked for her help, and she turned him down. Jericho was disappointed in her, he thought she would always be on his side, and pointed out that she was working with heroes associated with Vigilante, who was trying to kill him. He returned her to the Titans and fled to Time Square. The Titans spotted Vigilante, who was following them, and subdued him, though Ravager wanted to keep beating him for trying to kill Jericho. Vigilante promised to not kill Jericho if they promised that Jericho’s killing days were over. (Teen Titans v3 #70)

Jericho entered the Hamilton Grande, prepared for a slaughter. He announced that he had rigged explosives throughout the restaurant, and every wealthy patron was his hostage. Using a cellphone video, he recorded himself shooting the hotel manager in the head, and promised to kill a patron every two minutes, unless the Titans arrived to stop him. The Titans confronted Jericho, and tried to reason with him, but he as having none of it, telling them he’d succeed in killing them here his father failed, finally allowing him to overshadow his dad. He’d strapped explosives to his hostages, and held the trigger, guaranteeing that the Titans would die trying to save them. He offered Ravager a chance to escape, but she wasn’t abandoning her teammates. They tussled, and Jericho set off the detonator, and escaped. Newscrews filmed what appeared to be the dead Titans. Raven had actually created the illusion to fool Jericho, and the Titans defeated the villain. (Titans v2 #13) The Titans were battling super villain Cinderblock, but they were disorganized, and Wondergirl couldn’t take charge, having lost her confidence after Red Devil’s death. Beast Boy was in San Francisco, and helped them step up and defeat the villain. When he tried to talk to the team about Red Devil’s death they assured him they were fine. He realized they were dealing with their problems the same way he was, by not dealing with them. (Titans v2 #17) Blue Beetle and the Teen Titans made memorial statues for Hawk and Tempest following their deaths during Blackest Night. (Titans v2 #23) Osiris visited Wonder Girl at Titans Compound after his resurrection during the Brightest Day, seeking advice on what to do with himself. Wonder Girl urged him not to blow the second chance he got, and turn himself over to the authorities so he could deal with his accidental slaying of Persuader. Osiris told her that Kahndaq needed him free, and shoved her before flying away. Blue Beetle showed up, asking Wonder Girl if they should go after him, but she was convinced that he’d be back. (Titans v2 #24) Blue Beetle and the superhero community attended the funeral of Atom Ryan Choi. (Titans v2 #38)

The Black Beetle attacks during a family hike. During the battle, Black Beetle claims to be Hector's future incarnation, wanting revenge for Nadia's death. He retracts his statement, claiming to have killed Hector and taken his scarab. When Milagro was injured by Black Beetle, Jaime loses his temper, finally giving in to the scarab's suggestions to use lethal force. Jaime eventually manages to use tachyon beams to paralyze Black Beetle, only for the villain to claim that he was Jaime from the future and that he would don the black scarab after Milagro who would suffer brain damage from the injury she had just received in the present and destroyed the scarab. Jaime, deciding to get Milagro medical attention as quickly as possible, was forced to let Black Beetle escape. Before he departed, Black Beetle tells Jaime: "When you see Ted Kord, tell him I said "drop dead"". When Jaime states that Ted was already dead, Black Beetle replies "Yeah. I know". A few days later, Milagro is shown recovering in the hospital and Jaime is left deeply disturbed by his encounter. (Booster Gold v2 #25)

Shortly after arriving home, Jaime and his family are attacked by a squad of OMACs. (Justice League: Generation Lost v1 #2) With help from Booster Gold, Ice and Captain Atom, Jaime is able to repel the OMACs, but is accidentally sucked into a teleportation rift they create. The heroes end up in Russia, where Jaime learns of Max Lord and his attempt to make the world forget he ever existed. He agrees to help the former Justice League members bring Lord to justice. (Justice League: Generation Lost v1 #3) After a battle with members of the Rocket Red Brigade, the heroes learn that Max Lord has been manipulating the team in hopes that they would reform Justice League International, with Jaime taking the role held years earlier by Ted Kord. (Justice League: Generation Lost v1 #5)

Before they can figure out their next move, the base is attacked by the Creature Commandos. During the battle Max reveals himself while posing as one of the Creature Commandos. Blue Beetle ends up unconscious and Max captures him, heading to the teleporter and leaving the JLI behind. (Justice League: Generation Lost v1 #16)

Post-Flashpoint

Following the Flashpoint, a new version of history was created with a different series of events. Jaime Reyes was born to Alberto and Bianca Reyes, he grew up a normal child like many others until one day changed his life forever. Jaime was hanging out with his school friends Brenda and Paco by the river in his home town El Paso the day before school began. His friends were arguing when they noticed the scarab floating on the water, when Paco went to investigate it started shocking him prompting Brenda to help him causing her to be affected as well. The scarab then attached itself to Jaime, forcing him to become its host body. (Blue Beetle v9 #4)

Reyes and Paco then drove to a party where they accidentally stumbled on a fight between the Brotherhood of Evil and super-powered mercenaries. They came to target Jaime over his backpack which got damaged and activated the Scarab inside which bonded to him with it manifesting its armored form. (Blue Beetle v9 #1)

Booster Gold invited Beetle to join the Justice League International alongside the Olympian. Beetle mistakenly thought it was the regular Justice League, as he needed help from Cyborg. They were soon attacked by Brother Eye controlling OMAC, and Eye had Beetle teleported to the Reach homeworld while he destroyed the team. (Justice League International Annual v3 #1) He found himself in the possession of Bleeding Adonis who intended to use the Reach warrior as a weapon in the Hunt games. Dropped in the field, Jaime attempted to not participate but he knocked unconscious by Captain K'rot with this causing the Scarab to take over Reyes's body. He then targeted anyone in his path and later pursued Jediah Caul who was a former Green Lantern that still possessed a Power Ring. (Threshold v1 #2) He went on a rampage in this state until Jaime regained consciousness whereupon he left to find a place to decide on what to do. During this time, he encountered the New God Lonar who was only present on Tolerance and trapped in the Hunted games. (Threshold v1 #3)

Seeking assistance with the Scarab, Jaime turned to scientist, C.E.O. of Kord Industries, and former Blue Beetle, Ted Kord for help. The pair soon learned that the scarab was of alien origin and was partially sentient as it communicated with Jaime in his head. They began working together to use the Scarab's power for good. Months later Jaime was walking to school with his friends when he received the alert from Ted to go into action. He travelled to a restaurant where two super-villains were calling for his blood. He attacked the two villains- Rack and Ruin but was quickly overwhelmed by their regenerative abilities. Ted stepped in firing a gas missile into the restaurant forcing the two villains to flee. (Blue Beetle: Rebirth v1 #1) Over the next few weeks Jaime began having dreams of the sorcerer supreme Doctor Fate attempting to kill him. One day after school Jaime saw Ted conversing with a member of the metahuman street gang the Posse. Kord told him that he received a tip from the gang about the whereabouts of 3 different students. Travelling to one of the missing students' houses he discovered that the place had been wrecked and there was a giant hole in the ground. Jaime was then attacked by a figure who could shift through shadows, Jaime defeated the figure calling himself Blot who turned out to be one of the missing children. When he attempted to apprehend Blot the Posse intervened. (Blue Beetle v9 #1) The Posse told Jaime that the hole found in the house was one of three, each one found at the location of a missing student. Blur then took Blot to be looked over by Jaime's mother, who was revealed to be helping the Posse's cause by stitching them up. Blue Beetle then investigated the hole as the Posse left the scene, finding nothing Jaime became irritated as Blur of the Posse was following him around everywhere. After accidentally shooting Blur with his plasma cannon the two got into a fight, the fight ended with Jaime shocking Blur to unconsciousness. Jaime then headed home to confront his mother about the Posse. (Blue Beetle v9 #2)

Jaime came to be among those people infected by the Batman Who Laughs with special Batarangs that turned him into the darkest version of himself. He was then sent to help in enacting his masters plans where he infiltrated the Fortress of Solitude in the Bermuda Triangle. Once snuck inside, he took over the Kryptonian structure through his Scarab and infiltrated the Justice League's computer systems. (Batman/Superman v2 #3)
