Biography

Jean DeWolff was a red haired female human born in the modern age where she was the daughter of Phillip DeWolff and Celia DeWolff. (Peter Parker, The Spectacular Spider-Man v1 #107) It was noted that Jean also came to have an older brother named Brian DeWolff. Her father Phillip had joined the police force where he held the position of Commissioner with both his children entering into the profession. (Marvel Team-Up v1 #49) It was said that her father had never forgiven her mother for giving them a daughter. When Jean was only 6 months old, her father and mother were separated from one another. During the divorce settlement, the courts decided that Brian would stay with his father whilst Jean would go to her mother. Her mother was thrilled where she had sworn off men and cops but 4 years later she came to marry a patrolman named Carl Weatherby. Jean kept her birth name but came to adore her stepfather where she craved for his approval with him mutually caring for her in turn. He would encourage her to follow a career into law enforcement where she joined the police academy with her graduating and earning her shield. Her stepfather was secretly proud of her but never showed it as he wanted her to be the first woman police commissioner. Thus, Jean became totally driven to achieving this goal as she wanted to see Carl smile. In time, she quickly shot up through the ranks and gained many commendations by the time she reached her captaincy. (Peter Parker, The Spectacular Spider-Man v1 #107)

Meanwhile, Brian had gone to the police academy and become an officer with Jean also following a similar path. However, Phillip disapproved of his daughter becoming a police officer as he believed women had no place in such a job though Brian had always supported her. One day, her brother was out on patrol when their car was hit by another and five attackers emerged where they attacked the officers inside. Four of the attackers were shot but a fifth one had seemingly killed Brian whose body was never recovered from the scene of the crime. The next day, Jean graduated and appointed to a precinct where she began work as an assistant detective that was charged with investigating her brothers disappearance despite her father's protests. Her investigation uncovered nothing in the span of the next two years regarding Brian's disappearance and the case was ultimately closed. (Marvel Team-Up v1 #49)

A close friend of Jean's was Yuri Watanabe who was a fellow police officer. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #664) The two were lieutenants at the NYPD where they worked under Captain George Stacy. During this time, they worked a case against the Lucky Lobo gang when Stacy received a tip from an informant. Upon meeting his contact, he was attacked and shot in the leg where it appeared that he killed his informant who had turned on him. Lieutenants DeWolff and Watanabe went to recover him where he was taken to the hospital. Afterwards, DeWolff informed Captain Stacy that a case was being made against him as his informant had ledgers involving bribes from the police force and that his death made it appear that George had killed him to hide his involvement in the crime. Thus, the department was looking to have him resign with a possible corruption case being made against him. (Gwen Stacy v1 #1)

Watanabe adopted the guise of the Wraith and used the Mysterio technology to make her face appear as Jean DeWolff in order to strike fear into the criminal underworld that she was her slain friend who came back from the dead. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #664)

Overview

Personality and attributes

It was said that Jean had an affinity for short guys. (Gwen Stacy v1 #2)

Her father was Phillip DeWolff who had a notable career as a Commissioner until his retirement though he retained links with the police force. She was not on good terms with her father with there not being much love lost between them. Her father believed police work was not a job for a woman. As a result, Phillip DeWolff had always shown more attention to her brother Brian. Despite this, there was no rivalry between her and Brian with the siblings loving one another. (Marvel Team-Up v1 #49) It was said her father was said to had never forgiven Jean's mother for spawning a girl. (Peter Parker, The Spectacular Spider-Man v1 #107)

Her mother was Celia DeWolff whose relationship with her husband began to sour following the birth of Jean. This was because Phillip DeWolff resented his wife for spawning a daughter leading to the couple splitting up when Jean was only 6 months old. Following her parents divorce, Jean stayed with her mother who was thrilled as she had sworn off men in general and cops in particular. Four years later, Celia became involved with a patrolman named Carl Weatherby and came to marry him. This saw her taking the name Celia Weatherby though despite the name change Jean kept her biological father's name. Celia was never happy though with the life of a policeman as she was constantly worried that she would get the call at night that her husband had died on duty. Similarly, she was not happy for her daughter to have such a life for herself and did not like Carl encouraging Jean down a similar career path. (Peter Parker, The Spectacular Spider-Man v1 #107)

As a child, Jean came to adore her step-father Carl Weatherby with this feeling being mutual. He was said to had loved being a cop with him passing this love to her in turn. In this time, she saw him as a blue knight in armor who was out keeping the city safe. Jean even came to wear a little badge he brought home for her. Unable to get her biological fathers approval due to her gender, Jean's stepfathers approval meant everything to her. She came to conclude that deep down she wanted to be daddy's little girl. The day she graduated from the police academy, both she and Carl were noted for being happy. Jean noted Carl as her father where she kept pushing hard to the point of craving for his approval. Though he never smiled, she knew he was proud of her achievements and her rise through the police ranks. This was because he wanted to her to become the first woman police commissioner. He knew that the only way to do so was to be totally driven and thus he withheld his smile until the day she achieved this goal. Thus, she worked hard in order to see the day he smiled. (Peter Parker, The Spectacular Spider-Man v1 #107)
