Biography

Origin

Jennifer Pierce was a female Metahuman born as the youngest daughter of Black Lightning and his wife Lynn Stewart with her having an older sister named Anissa Pierce. (Justice Society of America v3 #13)

When her powers manifested, they came to randomly trigger whenever she touched an electrical device thus shorting power at her home. This caused her parents to consider enrolling her with the Justice Society so that she could handle her powers. (Justice Society of America v3 #12)

Upon joining the Justice Society, Jennifer immediately forms a bond with fellow teen heroines Stargirl and Cyclone. She also attracts the romantic interests of Jakeem Thunder, another younger member of the team. Jennifer is at first unsure of a superhero codename, believing that her sister will "kill her" if she adopts the name Lightning as a counterpoint to Anissa's own. Nonetheless, this is the name she eventually settles on when she first goes into battle with the JSA.

Personality and attributes

When her powers were active, her entire body was covered in a yellow electrical effect that some could confuse for a costume. (Justice Society of America v3 #12)

Cyclone was the one who came to suggest that she take the name Lightning. (Justice Society of America v3 #12)

She was the daughter of Jefferson Pierce who was the superhero Black Lightning whilst her mother was Lynn Stewart. Jennifer was the younger sister of Anissa Pierce who had also gone to become a superhero named Thunder. (Justice Society of America v3 #13)

Powers and abilities

Her body began to generate some kind of electrical field that initially was triggered anytime she touched anything electronic. (Justice Society of America v3 #12) Once triggered, she was trapped in that state for 5 or 10 minutes. (Justice Society of America v3 #12) Every fuse within a hundred yards were not to be effected by her powers. (Justice Society of America v3 #13)

Jennifer had the ability to become living electricity, making her more powerful than her father. (DC Power: A Celebration v1 #1)

  • Jennifer Pierce was created by Mark Waid and Alex Ross where she made her first appearance in Kingdom Come v1 #1 (1996).
  • The character was brought into the main continuity by Geoff Johns and Dale Eaglesham where she made her first appearance in Justice Society of America v3 #12 (March, 2008).

Alternate Versions

  • In Kingdom Come v1 #1 (1996), an alternate version of Lightning was first introduced in the Kingdom Come reality designated as Earth-22 in the Multiverse.

Television

  • In DC Nation Shorts, an adolescent version of Jennifer Pierce as Lighting appeared in the "Thunder and Lightning" animated shorts where she was voiced by actress Masasa Moyo.
  • In Black Lightning, Jennifer Pierce appeared in the live-action television series where she was primarily portrayed by actor China Anne McClain whilst actress Fallyn Brown portrayed a younger Jennifer. Jennifer was born on October 7th, 2001, to Jefferson and Lynn Pierce, as the younger sister of Anissa as well. At some point, she witnessed her father come home bloody and injured and asked why he was in that condition. Her mother shielded her away from the site and told him she wanted a divorce. She later joined Black Lightning's team under the alter-ego Lightning; due to possessing similar powers to her father, Tyson Sykes nicknamed her Baby Lightning and due to her reckless vigilante activities; the media nicknamed her Lethal Lightning.
  • In Young Justice, Jennifer Pierce appeared in the animated television series during its third season. She was shown as being the daughter of Black Lightning and Lynn Stewart where she was a young girl staying with her mother.
