Biography

John Ryker was a male human born in the modern age where he was said he had joined the U.S. military when he was a young man. (Incredible Hulk v2 #12)

According to one account, he was responsible for creating the conspiracy around the assassination of John F. Kennedy. It was revealed Kennedy was really killed by two Corsican mercenaries, but at the time it was deemed too expensive to wage World War III, so the idea of a conspiracy scapegoating Lee Harvey Oswald was created. (Incredible Hulk v2 #12)

Initially, Ryker irradiated various subjects to try and duplicate the accident that created the Hulk. The goal of these experiments was to isolate the Hulk's ability to cope with the radiation and use it to heal his wife. His closest success was Private Benjamin Tibbets who mutated into a Hulk-like being known as Flux. However, his transformation was imperfect leading Ryker to simply use him as a near-mindless soldier against the Hulk. (Incredible Hulk v2 #19)

After his arrest, he was placed in a S.H.I.E.L.D. prison until the agency's collapse with H.A.M.M.E.R. rising to replace it. Director Norman Osborn then had General Ryker freed for a special project that involved a time-traveller called Lyra. She was a female warrior that was born in a possible future where she was the daughter of Thundra and the Hulk. From her, Osborn had learnt of a profitable venture made in the future by the Origins Corporation in the sale of superhuman abilities. Thus, he established the Origins Corporation in the modern age and placed John Ryker as its CEO due to his pre-existing experience in grafting Hulk genetic material onto subjects. Ryker then created the Gamma Corps: Black as his field team where he deployed them to find and capture Lyra so that she could be harvested of useful genetic material for further experiments.
