Biography

Kaguya Ōtsutsuki (大筒木カグヤ, Ōtsutsuki Kaguya) was an ancient female being who was a member of the Ōtsutsuki clan (大筒木一族, Ōtsutsuki Ichizoku). A millennia ago, she came to Earth in search for the fruit of the God Tree (神樹, Shinju, English TV: Divine Tree) where she was supposed to return its chakra to the clan's main family on another world. On Earth, she was found by the people that resided in the Land of Ancestors (祖の国, So no Kuni) with her being brought before the nation's emperor Tenji (テンジ, Tenji). Kaguya identified herself as the God Tree's guardian and wiped the memories of the encounter with her from the emperor's mind. Afterwards, she decided to settle among the people of this land and she came to be regarded as the concubine of the emperor. During this time, she grew closer to the emperor where she came to fall pregnant. However, the Land of Ancestors was threatened with war from the rival kingdom of the Land of That (彼の国, Ka no Kuni) that erupted over a border dispute. Emperor Tenji attempted to prevent an outbreak of conflict and declared that anyone that attacked their enemy's represented was to be considered a criminal and punished with execution. Despite this proclamation, Kaguya came to threaten the Land of That's representatives and thus she broke the emperor's edict leading to the order to execute her. As a result, she along with her assistant Aino (アイノ, Aino) had to go on the run from the Land of Ancestors with them being hunted down. This led to her losing faith in humanity though she still had a desire for peace. Kaguya came to decide to claim god-like power in an effort to end conflict among humanity. Thus, she defied her clan’s taboo against harvesting the fruit from the God Tree for herself and consumed it. This awakened her Rinne Sharingan and became endowed with the power of chakra. The awakening of these powers allowed her to single-handedly end the wars and eventually control the nations. This caused her to be worshipped as the Rabbit Goddess and received the blessing from the people. However, she came to fear the rest of her clan and thus she decided to use the Infinite Tsukuyomi in order to transform humans into an army of White Zetsu. This force was to be used to protect her chakra from being stolen by her clansmen. According to one account, Kaguya did not want mankind to perish and thus freed some of the victims of the genjutsu with their memories being erased.

She later came to give birth to twin sons named Hagoromo Otsutsuki and Hamura Otsutsuki with the pair being the first people that were born with chakra. During this time, Kaguya found herself ruling the lands by herself and often resorted to cruelty with her acts being regarded with fear, awe and reverence among mankind. The Rabbit Goddess then came to be regarded as a demon with Kaguya's own desire being driven entirely by her need to possess all chakra. Thus, she turned against her own children as she devised a plan to absorb their innate chakra and to accomplish this she merged herself with the God Tree to become the Ten-Tails with her sons being forced to challenge her in battle. Her sons were unaware that the giant beast was their mother and instead assumed the Ten-Tails to be an incarnation of the God Tree that was attempting to recover its stolen fruit. Thus, Hagoromo and Hamura battled the creature where they used the Chibaku Tensei to turn the beast's husk into the core of Six Paths thus creating the Moon. In the aftermath, Hamura took over leadership of the Ōtsutsuki clan and departed for the Moon in order to guard the remains of the Ten-Tails. Meanwhile, Hagoromo remained behind on Earth to spread chakra among humanity and teach them the arts of ninshu. Unknown to the twin sons, Kaguya's will came to manifest into an artificial being known as Black Zetsu who looked to revive his 'mother'.
