History

Karn was a desolate planet located, like Gallifrey, in the constellation of Kasterborus. The Sisterhood dwelled there, guarding the Sacred Flame from which the Elixir of Life is distilled. The Renegade Time Lord Morbius also attacked the planet as a prelude to his conquest of Gallifrey.

When Morbius was destroyed (save his brain), the mad surgeon Mehenderi Solon set up shop in a Gothic-style castle on Karn, building him a new body. After Solon's maddened master destroyed him and was destroyed himself, Karn once more became the sole domain of the Sisterhood.

The Sisterhood remained on Karn where their Ohila had anticipated the Doctor's return in hopes he could stop the war then raging across creation. The Eighth Doctor responding to an emergency distress signal from a gunship that had been damaged in orbit, attempted to rescue the sole remaining crewmember, a woman named Cass, but was ultimately killed when the ship crash-landed. The Sisterhood restored him to life for only a few minutes, allowing him to regenerate into his next incarnation. (Episode: The Night of the Doctor)
