History

The Kazon were a humanoid race of beings that were native to a world in the Delta Quadrant. They were a pre-warp civilisation when their planet was encountered by a more technologically advanced race known as the Trabe. They came to conquer the Kazon homeworld who subjugated the species and incorporated into their own society. Eventually, the Kazon came to rebel against the Trabe forming sects that fought against the oppression of their conquerors. A tactic used to keep the Kazon in line was the Trabe encouraging the species to fight amongst themselves with this being used as a means to control them. (Episode: Alliances)

After seeing a display of the advanced technology on U.S.S. Voyager, specifically the replicator and transporter, the Kazon schemed to steal these machines and incorporate them into their own ships. Captain Kathryn Janeway refused to provide the hostile alien species with any information regarding Voyager's technology because of her fear of upsetting the power dynamics in the Delta Quadrant and thus violating the Prime Directive. (Episode: Caretaker)

Overview

In appearance, the Kazon were a humanoid race, having at least two racial variants, one minority race with brown skin and the most common race with copper-colored skin. The foreheads of all Kazon featured distinctive ridges and their black or brown hair grew in large chunks rather than individual strands. (Episode: Caretaker)

Male Kazon children were usually raised as warriors. When they came of age, they took part in trials to earn their adult names. When they had earned their names, they were considered to be true warriors. Displays of affection from a father to his son were considered a source of shame for the son. Though it was not commonly shown, Kazon did care for their children. (Episode: Initiations)

Leaders within the Kazon sects were referred to as Maje with the head of the sect referred to as First Maje. (VOY: Caretaker)

One notable rank within the Sects was that of the senior Askara who assisted the ruling Maje. Notable young Kazon that showed promise were trained to become an Askara. (Episode: Basics, Part 1)

The dominance of the male of the species meant that they saw races that had women in power as being the reason why their respective societies were weak. (Episode: Basics, Part 1)
