Biography

Diamond is Unbreakable

Koichi with Josuke in JoJo no Kimyō na Bōken v1 #30.

Koichi Hirose (Japanese: 広瀬 康一, Hepburn: Hirose Kōichi) was a Japanese male born at the Red Cross Hospital in S City on March 28, 1984 at 6:27 AM. He was born prematurely, only weighting 2325g and kept in intensive care for 7 days.

In 1999, he came to be enrolled as a first-year student in class 1-B of Budogaoka Highschool where he went to attend his first day of school. Whilst walking, he came to accidentally bump into Jotaro Kujo and was knocked down as a result. Koichi later came to help Jotaro out by giving him directions as he was new in town. In that time, they came to witness a group of bullies picking on Josuke Higashikata where he came to see them being punched but no one as present at the scene. Afterwards, he came to overhear a discussion between Jotaro and Josuke leading to him learning about Stand and witnessed the invisible entity help stop a robbery.

Koichi is shot with the Bow and Arrow by Keicho Nijimura, who was searching for a Stand capable of killing his father. Koichi develops the egg-shaped Stand Echoes, whose ability is still unknown, and bears witness to Josuke's battle against Keicho as well as the theft of the Arrow by Red Hot Chili Pepper.

Koichi remains well-involved with the overall plot, his Stand even evolving multiple times as he fights a few battles on his own. He is a victim of the con artist Tamami Kobayashi, who threatens his family in exchange for money. In this battle, Koichi develops Echoes ACT1 and defeats Tamami, who later befriends him.

With the help of Tamami, Koichi investigates the Stand user Toshikazu Hazamada and tries to fight him alongside Josuke. Hazamada is ultimately defeated.

Yukako, a fellow student in love with him, at first proved to be very difficult for him to deal with as she was very aggressive in her affections towards him. Koichi tried to look like a "bad guy" to keep her away but this plan backfires as she goes to the point of kidnapping him and threatening his life should he not appreciate her efforts to "change him into a better person". Koichi defeats her in battle after developing Echoes ACT 2 but saves her life in the end.

Akira Otoishi reveals later that Koichi was one of the Stand users he watched with his Red Hot Chili Pepper. Koichi then participates little in the battle against Akira, his weak long-ranged Echoes being used as a liaison between him on the port and Jotaro on the boat.

Some time later, Koichi somewhat befriends Hazamada over their shared love of mangas. The pair goes to the house of famous mangaka Rohan Kishibe to ask for an autograph and are even invited inside. Rohan baits the students into looking at his art and they get turned into books by Rohan's Heaven's Door as a result. Rohan takes a keen interest in Koichi for his admirable personality and decides to brainwash him to serve as a muse. Thankfully, Josuke and Okuyasu intervene to beat Rohan and rein in his obsession.

A month later, Rohan and Koichi meet again. The two accidentally discover the Ghost Girl's Alley and explore it only to find Reimi Sugimoto, who explains that a killer has been lurking in town for decades. On the way out, Koichi is almost abducted by the malicious spirits of the alley but Rohan saves him. Koichi goes on to warn Josuke and Okuyasu about the killer.

Golden Wind

Afterwards, Jotaro asked Koichi's help in investigating someone for the Speedwagon Foundation. Hirose was to go to Naples in Italy to find a young man named Haruno Shiobana (汐華 初流乃) and get a sample of his DNA for testing. This saw Koichi being given the finances needed for travel and Rohan Kishibe implanted the knowledge to understand Italian to make the journey easier. Upon arriving, a young blonde haired man offered to be Koichi's taxi driver with Hirose initially refusing but relenting when he saw that the public taxi's had a long queue for them. However, upon loading his luggage, the driver drove away as he attempted to steal the baggage leading to Koichi summoning his Stand to hold the vehicle. The driver escaped and Koichi found his luggage to had gone with the perpetrator having escaped with Koichi learning from the local police that the thief was named Giorno Giovanna. Hirose came to realise that Giorno was actually the Haruno Shiobana that he had been sent to find by Jotaro. He later bumped into Giovanna at a café with the blonde haired teenager attempting to escape with Koichi coming to realise that he was a Stand user whose power was to turn inanimate objects into living creatures who reflected any attack on them against the perpetrator. Hirose thus ended up hitting himself with an attack allowing for Giorno the opportunity to escape. Koichi then continued his search with finding Giorno and came to find his place of residence where he broke in to see if he could find his luggage. None of his luggage was present with him reasoning that it had been sold but he ended up finding his passport after which he departed the site.

When Yukako searches for Aya Tsuji's help, Koichi is beginning to be attracted to Yukako. He even offers to become blind in case he fails to help Yukako return to her old appearance (changed by Cinderella). Later in the story, still lovestruck, she seemed to have learned from her mistakes in trying to force him and approached him more carefully, upon which Koichi warmed up to her and slowly, willingly, became her boyfriend.

Overview

Personality and attributes

In appearance, Kochi Hirose was a teenage boy of below average height where he stood at 157 cm (5'2") tall with an average build.

His most well known trait was his friendliness and overall politeness toward any stranger and acquaintance. Possessing a gentle heart, Koichi usually did not seek to harm his opponents.

Initially, he was shown as being amiable though was meek in his youth. This changed though over the course of his time in Morioh.

He was known to also have an older sister named Ayana Hirose (広瀬 綾那 Hirose Ayana) who came to be a third year student at an all-girls school.

Powers and abilities

Originally, Koichi Hirose was an ordinary human being with no special powers or abilities. This changed when he got pierced by the Arrow (矢 Ya) thus granting him the power of a Stand (スタンド Sutando) allowing him to manifest his life energy as a humanoid figure. In his case, this took the form of Echoes (エコーズ Ekōzu) where Koichi's lack of the necessary fighting spirit nearly caused it to die upon its emergence as an egg where in this state it was immobile and not capable of acting. Its potential though manifested in its ability to 'write' sound effects on people and objects.

Over time, it began to manifest into different forms each of which were referred to as ACTS with Hirose calling upon one at any given time. Among the forms included:

  • ACT 1 : resembled a flying although wingless turtle with a long tail and wheels surrounding its beak. Its power is to write a given sound effect in kana on a surface. The effect will then constantly sound with increasing volume, until Echoes dispels the writing. Until his confrontation with Yukako, this was the only Act that Koichi could access. During that battle, he gained access to Act 2, which has a more humanoid form. Rather than just making sounds
  • ACT 2 : the Stand's tail could create sound effect writings that actually invoke the associated quality when activated such as creating an actual wind current if the words 'whoosh' was written.
  • ACT 3 : a completely humanoid Stand with turtle shell-like who cannot fly, and has a much shorter active range with a somewhat independent, foul-mouthed personality. It was extremely fast, and can 'freeze' any one thing within 2 meters by rapidly punching it, at which point the object will suddenly become extremely heavy.

After developing his Stand's three forms, Koichi was provided a wide variety of choice in how he wanted to respond to his situations. For direct engagements, he had a preference for using ACT3 due to its combat potential. However, he used ACT1 as a scout due to its great range namely 50 meters allowing him to watch his surroundings.
