Biography

Origin

Konan (Japanese: 小南, Hepburn: Konan) was a female human who was born in the village of Amegakure in the Ninja World. She was noted for being a child during the Second Shinobi World War where her family was noted to had been killed in the conflict. This left her as an orphan where she was forced to fend for herself in order to survive. During this time, she found another war orphan named Yahiko where they began to work together to better their survival chances. Sometime afterwards, Konan came to find another boy named Nagato who was near dying alongside his dog that he named Chibi. She came to rescue him and took him to their hideout where the three came to be close friends. The trio then continued their efforts in surviving the war torn land with them stealing food in order to survive. Such was the case for years until one day they inadvertently stumbled on a battleground that was being fought between Jiraiya, Tsunade and Orochimaru of the hidden leaf battling Hanzo of the Salamander. In the fight, a stray paper bomb struck the war orphans location and killing the dog Chibi with Konan being among the three that mourned their pet. It was then that Yahiko resolved to be stronger and decided that they needed to become stronger by learning ninjutsu which they intended to achieve by apprenticing themselves to the leaf shinobi of the recent battle. He reasoned that them battling Hanzo meant that they were strong fighters who had recently been crowned the Three Legendary Sanin of Konohagakure. The orphans then took what food they could whilst donating the remaining to their village as they went in search for the Sanin with this being a dangerous and perilous journey. They were ultimately successful in their mission as they came upon the three by chance. Yahiko went to investigate where he encountered the Sanin and after seeing them to be non-hostile he told Konan and Nagato to come from hiding when they were detected by the three shinobi. Jiraiya offered them food though his comrade Orochimaru suggested killing the children as it was a kinder fate for them. However, Jiraiya decided to remain behind in Amegakure to care for the children until they could better fend for themselves. Thus, he began to care for the three orphans over the course of the next few years. One day, Yahiko and Nagato were attacked by a rogue ninja who nearly killed them until the latter's powers eliminated the invader. It was then that Jiraiya decided to teach the three ninjutsu until he felt confident that they were capable enough to survive on their own.

Afterwards, she and Nagato stayed with Yahiko who formed an army of like-minded shinobi that sought to survive and oppose the war in their land with them being known as the Akatsuki. They became renowned for their strength and effectiveness leading to them being targeted by Iwa ninja who attacked their headquarters though Yahiko along with his comrades managed to escape in time. It was during this time that Konan and Yahiko became particularly close as the two developed romantic feelings for one another. Meanwhile, the Akatsuki grew in strength over time until they became a powerful force where at the onset of the Third Shinobi World War when they were approached by a man claiming to be the infamous Madara Uchiha. He offered to help them in their pursuits but Yahiko came to refuse this help as he suspected that this 'Madara' was simply trying to use them. In the time afterwards, the Akatsuki began a search for peace with their ranks growing and becoming known throughout Amegakure. This was to the point that they became a threat to Hanzo of the Salamander who seemingly offered a chance of working together with the group where he claimed he would help in negotiations with other nations. The next day while on patrol, Konan was abducted by Hanzō's men who were being supported by the Anbu of Konohagakure where they arranged a meet-up with Yahiko and Nagato. In exchange for her life, Hanzo wanted Yahiko killed with Konan urging her comrades to leave her behind. However, they refused and as Nagato was paralysed with shock by the order he was helpless as Yahiko stabbed himself with his friends kunai. This saw him dying and Nagato in a fit of rage used his power along with the summoned Demonic Statue of the Outer Path to save Konan whilst slaughtering Hanzo, his subordinates and the Anbu. The incident came to cripple Nagato who was determined now to end war by engaging in large scale destruction to scare anyone from ever engaging in conflict again. Konan came to follow him in ensuring his dream came to fruitition as the death of Yahiko had deeply effected the two.

This saw them accepting Tobi's offer of support where the pair began to recruit S-rank missing-nin into a new incarnation of the Akatsuki. This group came to be a mercenary group that offered their strength to ninja villages and earn profit that was used to fund their long-term plans. Nagato came to take the name Pain where he and Konan returned to Amegakure with them beginning a civil war in the village. As a messenger of Pain, Konan promised the villagers that they would bring about a new era for the village and improve their standing among the other nations.

Akatsuki

Upon Deidara capturing the One-Tail Jinchūriki, Konan assisted in sealing the Tailed Beast from within Gaara. Konan later assisted in sealing the Two-Tails from Yugito after Hidan captured her. Konan is present when the Akatsuki prepares to seal the Four-Tails, and listens silently as Pain informs the other members of the deaths of Hidan and Kakuzu, as well as news that Sasuke Uchiha has killed Orochimaru. Shortly after the Four-Tails is sealed, Zetsu reports the deaths of Deidara and Tobi in a fight with Sasuke. Pain expressed no love lost over Tobi, but encouraged the remaining members of Akatsuki to mourn Deidara. Konan later informs Pain that their leader Tobi had arrived in Amegakure for a meeting with them. After Tobi left, she knew that something that the latter said had upset Nagato. She was in Amegakure when Pain detected an intruder having entered the village that he could detect through his jutsu. After stopping the rain, he dispatched Konan to find the intruder where in her paper form she came to find out that it was her former sensei Jiraiya who had entered their village. Pain came to tell her to try to kill him if she could do so. Konan then engaged Jiraiya in battle until Pain could arrived, attacking Ryūsui who was being controlled by the latter, restraining him in a swarm of paper and created a spear, but the Sannin noticed the attack and deflected it in time using Fire Release: Flame Bullet, driving Konan back. Jiraiya recognised Konan and complimented her on her power and beauty, commenting that she had become "one hell of a woman". In the anime, Konan's Paper Drizzle was able to overwhelm his fire technique, however, Jiraiya was able to avoid it in time to use the Toad Oil Bullet, rendering her unable to manipulate her paper. She is then immobilised by his elongated hair, but is saved by Pain's Giant Crustacean that washed the oil off. She left the battle as instructed by Pain and regrouped with him after he had killed Jiraiya. After Utakata was captured, Konan, along with the other Akatsuki members extracted the Six-Tails from him.

Afterwards, she and Pain had a meeting with 'Madara' who revealed that Sasuke had acquired the Eight-Tails which meant that only the Nine-Tails was left to be captured. Pain was then dispatched to Konoha for this task where he and Konan made their way to the village hidden in the leaf. Konan later accompanied Pain during his attack on Konoha. When they arrived, they swiftly eliminated a patrol of Konoha-nin, with Pain giving Konan orders to spare no-one. She was shown asking the Konoha shinobi if they knew the whereabouts of Naruto Uzumaki as they were trapped in her paper. The shinobi were saved by the Aburame clan's kikaichū. Later, Konan was called back, only to discover Pain had decided to use one of his most dangerous techniques. Concerned for his health, she begged him to stop using the technique, to no avail. Pain clearly had his mind made up, and continued to use the technique on a massive scale. After consulting with Pain about the use of his technique, she was shown departing, stating she would look after him from now on. She then dispersed her Paper Clone and remained with Nagato for the rest of the invasion, constantly warning him to not overexert himself. When Naruto later found their location, she attempted to keep him from Nagato, but Nagato told her to step aside. She did as he asked, and listened to their conversation, but remained concerned about Nagato's condition. When Naruto led Nagato to having a change of heart and he decided to revive the people of Konoha, Konan realised that doing so would cost him his life. Knowing she could not stop him, however, she only marvelled at Naruto's ability to change others. Nagato came to be moved by Naruto's words and decided to put his hope in a better world in the hands of Uzumaki. This similarly saw Konan deciding to end hostilities against the hidden leaf. To rectify his actions, Nagato decided to use a resurrection jutsu in order to restore the souls of everyone that died in their attack. Konan was against this as she knew that this particularly jutsu drew on the casters own life and that the scale of the technique would kill him. However, Nagato felt that he had to go forward with this and ultimately sacrificed himself in order to restore everyone to life. With Nagato dead, Konan decided to abandon the Akatsuki as she gathered the bodies of both him and Yahiko which she encased in paper as she decided to take them with her. She then told Naruto that he would embody their hopes and dreams in changing the cruel nature of the Ninja World whereupon she departed back for Amegakure. before departing, she gave Naruto a bouquet of paper flowers to symbolise a truce and wished that they would become "flowers of hope that never die" for him.

Back in her home village, she established a shrine for both Yahiko and Nagato as she made preparations for a future encounter with Tobi. This involved her gathering her chakra and to create an elaborate trap for the hidden Akatsuki mastermind. This time eventually came to pass when Tobi demanded to know where Nagato's body was located as he intended to claim the Rinnegan from it. However, Konan opposed him and battled him where she had shown to had intensely studied Tobi's abilities and prepared counters for his teleportation jutsu. Their fight on the outskirts of the village resulted in Konan unleashing her Paper Person of God Technique as her final attack against him under the belief that this would kill her foe. However, she did not know that Tobi had implanted a second Sharingan in his left eye and used the forbidden Izanagi jutsu to undo the damage dealt to him. This allowed him to badly injure Konan but despite her wounds she decided to continue the battle as she was determined to give her life for Naruto's cause. Despite her attempts, she was ultimately killed by Tobi who left her body floating in the water whereupon he took Nagato's body.

Overview

Personality and attributes

In appearance, Konan was a female human with short, straight blue hair arranged in a bun where she had grey eyes that had lavender eye shadow along with white labret piercings. As a member of the Akatsuki, she wore their distinctive cloaks and wore a ring on her middle finger with the kanji translating to mean 'White' whilst she had orange nail polish on her finger nails. Her tendency to create paper wings led to the people of Amegakure calling her an Angel (天使, Tenshi).

As a child, she was shown to had been a bright, compassionate, and relatively cheerful person.

The trauma of her past had led to a shift in her personality by the time she became an adult. She came to be a smart, stoic, calm, and level-headed individual.

She came to know Yahiko since childhood when the two wandered the lands as orphans. As the two were growing up, they came to be close and became romantically involved with one another.

After Nagato's sacrifice, Konan came fiercely adamant to protect Naruto Uzumaki as she came to see that the leaf shinobi had embodied the dream once shared by her and her friends. The mission to attain world peace had been entrusted to Naruto by Nagato with Konan looking to be a bridge to help achieve that dream. This was an added reason for her to abandon the Akatsuki and to turn against Tobi.

Powers and abilities

Konan was born a female human who had the capacity to manipulate her chakra with her receiving her first training in ninjutsu from Jiraiya. He trained her to the point that she could better survive and fend for herself after being orphaned during the shinobi war. Over time, she came to be a skilled shinobi and in fact became an S-ranked criminal notable for her power.

From a young age, she had a natural talent towards origami with this being furthered during her training. This allowed her to infuse her chakra into paper and use it to achieve various feats. She eventually came to master her jutsu that was developed into a technique known as the Dance of the Shikigami (式紙の舞, Shikigami no Mai). This allowed her to convert her chakra into power and transform her body including her clothing into sheets of paper. It was shown that with his power she could disperse her body into paper that could reform her body elsewhere allowing her to appear suddenly at another location. Konan also used the paper to create wings for herself allowing her to fly in the air. One of her tactics was to encase her foes in paper leaving them unable to move or even breath. In this state, he could interrogate the person by depriving them of air before asking them questions. Offensively, she could harden the paper sheets and fold them into weapons such as arrows or shuriken.

Among the techniques known to her included:

  • Paper Clone (紙分身, Kami Bunshin) : using her ability, she was able to shape and change the colour of her paper into forming one or more replicas of herself.
  • Paper Drizzle (紙時雨, Kami Shigure) : with her paper wings, she was able to launch multiple paper projectiles in rapid succession at a target.
  • Paper Shuriken (紙手裏剣, Kami Shuriken) : using her chakra, she could harden the papers she created and shape them into shurikens that she could send at a target.
  • Paper Person of God Technique (神の紙者の術, Kami no Shisha no Jutsu) : a move that required the preparation of six hundred billion explosive paper bombs that were scattered across the environment where they were hidden from enemies. The sophistication of the technique was enough that not even the Sharingan was able to discern them. Once an enemy was in place, she activated the technique that caused the environment to move as the billions of paper shifted and then detonated at her opponent.

Konan came to be one of the founding members of the original Akatsuki (暁, literally meaning: "Dawn" or "Daybreak"). She remained part of the group when they became a subversive mercenary group of missing-nin.
