History
With the aid of the Sentinel called Alpha, noted anti-Mutant organizer Lydia Nance hatched on a plan to abduct the X-Man Colossus. He was taken to their base in the Savage Lands where the Sentinel sought to harvest the traces of the Legacy Virus from his body. This was in order to create a self-replicating nanite based weapon that would seek out all holders of the X-Gene and kill them. (X-Men: Gold v2 #28)

- The Legacy Virus was created by Fabian Nicieza and Greg Capullo where it made its first appearance in X-Force v1 #18 (January, 1993).
Alternate Versions
- In Age of Apocalypse v2 (2015), a version of the Legacy Virus was released into the realm of Apocalypse on Battleworld. This version was created in secret by Doctor Nemesis who provided it as a weapon to the Human High Council. This was because he secretly desired it to be released across the realm so he could rise to become the new leader of the region. Apocalypse shattered the canister containing the virus in order for his philosophy of survival of the fittest to take effect but he died from the exposure. Doctor Nemesis empowered with the genetics of hundreds of Mutants attempted to become the lands new ruler until Jean Grey's power was restored allowing her to use the Phoenix Force. For a brief moment, she used this power to not only destroy Doctor Nemesis but purge the realm of the Legacy Virus.

Television
- In X-Men, a genetically engineered viral plague made an appearance in the 1990s animated television series in the episode "Time Fugitive" that was a possible reference to the Legacy Virus. It was developed by Apocalypse in the guise of a human scientist who was associated with the Friends of Humanity. The Friends of Humanity distributed the plague to humans with them blaming Mutants as the cause for the disease. In reality, the infected humans returned back to normal after a short time but Mutants infected led to the virus mutating where it became lethal. The altered timeline home of Bishop had the plague killing millions leading to his return to the present to avert that future. However, his actions led to the death of himself and the X-Men thus erasing Cable's home timeline. Cable travelled to the present where he ultimately had Wolverine infected by the plague allowing his body to develop anti-bodies that provided a cure for plague thus thwarting Apocalypse's plans.

- In X-Men: Gamesmaster's Legacy, the Legacy Virus appeared in the 1990s video game where it was said to be ravaging Mutantkind with the Gamesmaster holding a cure to it.
