History

The Lekgolo (Hunters) were a non-humanoid species from the planet Te in the Milky Way Galaxy.

In 789 BCE, the early Covenant discovered the planet Te that was the first world they discovered as they used primitive versions of a Luminary to find Forerunner worlds. Upon arrival, they soon discovered that the Lekgolo infested the last vestiges of an ancient Forerunner installation in orbit of Te that they were consuming. Thus, the Sangheili were dispatched to eliminate the Lekgolo race. However, the Covenant quickly learnt that this was an impossible task as they were attempting to exterminate trillions of Lekgolo hidden on structures that they also sought to preserve. In 784 BCE, a Sangheili Arbiter proposed instead that the Lekgolo be assimilated into the Covenant. They highlighted the species strange capacity for being adapted for use in excavation, transportation and even combat. Thus, what followed was a period in Covenant history that was known as the Taming of the Hunters.

Overview

In appearance, the Lekgolo (Latin: Ophis Congregatio) were an eel form that individually varied dramatically in length, girth and weight with these forming an exotic subsistence gestalt species that merged into various forms. These existed within densely composite subsistence gestalts that were vlose-knit extremophilic alien communities that could survive the duress of space for months or years with little or no outside resources. Individual Lekgolo eels did not demonstrate intelligence on their own but when they grouped together into forms of a collective did they develop higher intelligence, in this state, they formed complex neural connections where they generated a resilient network of hormonal and bioelectrical functionality.

Colonies of Lekgolo had varying degrees of intellectual capacity that was generally associated with neural mass. These, in turn, fulfilled specific caste roles with a number of existing. The Covenant had discovered six specific gestalt types these being the Dipholekgolo, Mgalekgolo, Rhulolekgolo, Sbaolekgolo, Khantolekgolo, and Thanolekgolo. Each form differed in mass, size and complexity with these forms geared towards fitting a specific functional role. Within the Covenant, Lekgolo eels were used for a variety of purposes but were most commonly encountered as Mgalekgolo (Hunters) colony forms. A single Mgalekgolo colony typically formed two gestalt beings where each weighed several thousand kilograms. Hunters were designed to engage in a form of physical combat closely approximated to hunter-killer formations, thus their name. The Covenant further augmented this colony type by heavily arming and armoring the creatures to be even more formidable in combat. Mgalekgolo communicated with themselves and other species by wringing and vibrating their elongated component bodies, generating deep, resonating sounds.

Their enormous size and brutality in combat meant that Mgalekgolo Hunter colonies were deployed by the Covenant as a last resort in combat engagements. Hunters were usually encountered in pairs with a single colony forming two such entities that were referred to as 'bond brothers'. Hunters were equipped with powerful assault cannons and enormous pavise Shields thst were composed of the same material as the battleplate on Covenant capital ships. Their unparalleled size and strength made them valuable in the Covenant. However, Hunters tended to view other species as impeding irritations rather than allies that often led to excessive collateral damage whenever they were deployed.

There were numerous types of Hunters that included:

  • Hunter Captain : deployed to locations in operations that required direct intervention and monitoring. These captains ensured that all Lekgolo colonies and gestalts operated at full efficiency in battle. Each Captain is linked directly to its leader and its distant bond-brother over a specially modified battlenet relay. The Captains themselves exhibit individual peculiarities and attitudes, though none could be said to be personable.
  • Goliath : a Mgalekgolo that formed a single Hunter-style body instead of a pair with this being a single colony that optimises brute strength over all other considerations. Within their armored shell, the Lekgolo eel-worms within the gestalt adapt to function as corded pseudo-muscle and think-skinned protective bands that had a minimum of sensory and cognitive function. Goliath were not easily self-sustained due to their ravenous hunger for nutrients. As such, they were only formed in times of extreme danger among feral Lekgolo. However, they could coerced or subsidiary gestalts could be made to take this form where they served as superheavy infantry.

The Lekgolo colonies could be confirmed into a number of forms that inckuded:

  • Skitterer : mechanised quadrapedal scouts created by San'Shyuum technicians who circumvented the Covenant's ban on automated weapon systems. These were piloted by carefully selected and pruned Lekgolo colonies which substituted for artificial minds in some applications. These combat machines proved to have merit but were not widely used due to the risk of aberrant gestalts in small colonies. The Hunter known as Colony managed to correct the behavioural issues allowing for better integration among the Banished's forces.

Members

  • Colony : a Hunter pair allied with the Banished and followed Atriox with it commanding Lekgolo operations but in pursuit of their own objectives.
