History

The Lunataks of Plun-Darr were a team of ferocious warriors native to the moons of that world who were feared by the Mutants. Long ago, they came to the world of Third Earth in order to conquer planet leading to them attempting to overthrow Mumm-Ra. This proved to be fatal error to them as they were defeated but rather than destroy them he encased them in molten lava leaving them in a state where they were not dead but not alive either. Thus, they were left in the Dark Side that were the forbidden territory of Third Earth. (EP: Mumm-Ra Lives! Episode I)

Mumm-Ra plans on using the legendary Mask of Gorgon to free a sleeping child in the hills of Elfshima to use against the Thundercats. When Chilla and Tug Mug fail to get the mask because it turned them to stone, Mumm-Ra summons it using an ancient tome he discovered and decides that he needs the Eye of Thundera so that the mask can use sight beyond sight to awaken a Giant called the Child of Gorgon. (EP: The Mask of Gorgon)

The Lunataks look for Thundrilium in a cave on Hook mountain only to be driven mad by a strange creature who turns them against each other. The creature is called the Mad Bubbler, an ancient creature of Third Earth who lives in the old Thundrilium mine and has the power to turn all creatures into evil beings, and making people accept his motto - "destroy, or be destroyed". He manages to force the Lunataks (Luna, Amok, and Chilla) into fighting against each other, and afterwards Panthro, Tygra, and Cheetara. (EP: The Mad Bubbler)

Meanwhile, the Lunataks invade Cats' Lair and the Thundercats must rush back to save the Thunderkittens and Snarf who are being held as the Lunataks' slaves. (EP: Together We Stand)

Meanwhile, Cats Lair is getting worse as Cheetara and Tygra rush to fix things in the lair but are attacked by the Lunataks. They defeat the Lunataks temporarily, but the Lunataks return to finish off the Lair. In order to break the spell, Lion-O uses the Sword of Omens to block out the sun. (EP: Day of the Eclipse)

Overview

In appearance, the Lunataks were a group of sentients of varying forms and abilities who operated an intergalactic criminals. They were shown to be vicious, clever and powerful but did not work well together as a team.

It was said that they were too vicious even for the liking of Jackalman. Such was their reputation that it was said that they could not be controlled and were referred to as being crazy. (EP: Mumm-Ra Lives! Episode I)

Their headquarters was a massive floating fortress called Sky-Tomb.

Members

  • Luna : a short purple skinned humanoid with long hair and green eyes who was a sorceress that rode the four limbed Amok where she was the leader of the Lunataks. Cruel and caustic, Luna at one time recovered the magical belt once worn by her grandmother Queen Luna that was confiscated by Mumm-Rana and used its power to grow tall and mobile again, but reverted in size when the belt was later destroyed.
  • Red-Eye : a bald-headed humanoid with red eyes who hailed from the dark moon of Plun-Darr where he possessed incredible visual senses. A loyal follower of Luna, Red-Eye uses a spinning discus (stored in his armored chest plate) to battle his foes. He is often the engineer and pilot of Sky Tomb.
  • Tug Mug : a short humanoid with three metallic tripod legs who hailed from the first moon of Plun-Darr that had strong gravitational pull which meant he was extremely powerful on lower gravity worlds.
  • Alluro : a purple skinned humanoid with pointed ears and yellow eyes who was a master of deception, mind games, and psychological warfare. He is not much of a fighter, but he uses a powerful weapon called a Psyche-Club to immobilize his foes. The crystal ball launched from his club focuses his mental powers onto a foe, allowing him to manipulate their minds with illusions or to command them to do his bidding. Unlike the other Lunatak soldiers, no connection is ever made between Alluro's powers and any condition on his home-world moon that would necessitate having them.
  • Amok : Luna's loyal servant and bodyguard who is also her chief mode of transportation. A hulking quadrupedal bulldog/demon-like brute with very limited capacity for vocalization, Amok is strong and fast but also displays enough cunning to exact revenge against Luna for abandoning him when she recovers Queen Luna's magical belt. He also has an innate weakness for candies and will abandon Luna in an instant if it means getting to eat it.
  • Chilla : a blue-skinned humanoid with short white hair who hailed from the ice moon of Plun-Darr where she could control cold. She has little regard for life and sometimes uses her powers willfully out of spite. Her one major weakness is rock salt which is known for its ability to melt ice. Out of all the Lunataks, Chilla is the most humanoid.
