History

The thunder god's hammer in Thor v1 #494.

All-Father Odin commanded his son to go to the kingdom of the Dwarves to seek out Eitri in order for him to forge three treasures. After a long forging process, Eitri and Brokk managed to fashion the hammer Mjolnir from Uru. Odin placed his own enchantment over the hammer that meant it could only be wielded by one who was worthy and that it would return to their hand whenever thrown. Mjolnir was gifted by Odin to his own son namely Thor; the Prince of Asgard. (Thor Annual v1 #11)

There were different tales of the hammer but one aspect that was forgotten involved the God Tempest that was the Mother of Thunder which had existed since the earliest point of creation. This was a sentient superstorm that ravaged the cosmos when it approached Asgard during the reign of All-Father Odin. Odin challenged the storm and with all his might he defeated the thunderstorm where he trapped it into Uru which he took to the Dwarves who he commanded to forge it into a weapon for him. It took many days and the use of a star to melt the metal that fought against the Dwarves but they succeeded in crafting the hammer Mjolnir. All-Father Odin attempted to wield his new thunder weapon but it rebelled against him with the rampage nearly destroying Asgard. In anger, he placed an enchantment on it to prevent anyone from wielding it unless they were worthy where he left it within the weapons vault of Asgard. (Mighty Thor v2 #12)

During the War of the Realms, the Dark Council and their armies invaded Midgard where they intended to divide it amongst their forces leading to a battle against the world's heroes. In an effort to stop Malekith, Thor sacrificed his eye to the World Tree within the Sun for knowledge on how to end the war. This led to him summoning the Thor's of past eras to confront Malekith where the modern age Odinson unleashed the power of the Mother Storm. This saw Mjolnir return from the Sun and back to his hands where he used its might to defeat the Dark Elf. (War of the Realms v1 #6)

Overview

By rotating the hammer fast enough, he could emit anti-matter particles and use Mjolnir as a fan to disperse of such particles from individuals. (Journey into Mystery v1 #349)
