History

Origin

The Multiverse was a collection of universes that existed within a wider Omniverse.

Originally, there was a single universe that was embodied by the First Firmament who deemed himself perfect yet alone. In his loneliness, he created life in the form of Celestial beings with these being akin to toys and servants. Such was their devotion to him that he named them his Aspirants and he was content in their worship. However, in time, others formed that opposed the state of existence and instead wanted their creations to evolve to the point that they could attain the power of the universe. These Celestials wanted know growth, change and ultimately mortality as part of evolution. This was considered sacrilege to the Aspirants and a terrible war was waged between the two branches of Celestials where the rebels detonated unimaginable weapons that splintered the First Firmament into pieces which formed new universes from his substance that became the first Multiverse. From the Second Cosmos, the rebel Celestials colonised this Multiverse and crafted their own servitors as they engaged in their great work. (Ultimates 2 v2 #6)

It was said that in some prior Multiverse there was a single omnipotent being that existed all across infinity but found its lonely existence too unbearable and futile. To alleviate its solitude, it attempted to create life with this resulting in the creation of Demons as they had no concept of good or evil. The demonic horde turned to evil with their eventual actions displeasing their creator who destroyed them. Eventually, the loneliness by the cosmic being led to them committing a form of cosmic suicide that birthed existence along with re-creating the demonic hordes. This also led to the creation of cosmos relics that were known as the Infinity Gems. (Silver Surfer v3 #45) It was shown that a race of Celestials resided within the primordial universe where they mined for the Infinity Stones. (Infinity Wars v1 #5) They were responsible for distributing the gems across the Multiverse as part of some unknown purpose. (Infinity Wars v1 #6)

Second Cosmos

The Celestials colonized the Second Cosmos and created servitors called Omegas to help them manage the newly-created Multiverse. However, the Second Cosmos only lasted a few millennia because everything at the time was new, including the concept of an 'all-death'. The personification of the Second Cosmos was eager to try it and thus willingly died. After its death, it was reborn as the Third Cosmos. The Celestials moved on to the next Multiverse, while the Omegas decided to stay outside of the Multiverse in the remnants of the Second Cosmos. Due to this, the Omegas became known as the race of beings called the Beyonders. (Defenders: Beyond v1 #2)

Fifth Cosmos

The Fifth Cosmos was the first to have magic and sorcery began here. One of its inhabitants was Moridun, who was Sorcerer Supreme. At the end of the Fifth Cosmos, Moridun presumably bonded with the Sentience of the Cosmos and passed on to the Sixth Cosmos as Omnimax, the Devourer of Worlds. (Defenders v6 #3)

Sixth Cosmos

The Black Winter was responsible for killing the god-like beings of the previous universe. (Thor v6 #2) It was noted to had spared Galan of Taa who was to be its herald in the new universe. (Thor v6 #5)

Seventh Cosmos

After Wolverine traveled back in time numerous times to prevent the rise of power of the evil artificial intelligence known as Ultron, the space-time continuum was broken, causing a multiversal massive shockwave to echo through time and space as reality seeming to shatter before being pulled back together. A 'multiversal chaos' was unleashed, where numerous beings from other realities were transported to other universes through the tears of reality. (Age of Ultron v1 #10)

Due to the result of a phenomena paradoxical in nature known as incursions which resulted from the early destruction of a reality causing a contraction in the Multiverse. (New Avengers v3 #33)

The contraction to the Multiverse led to events known as the incursions. Realities throughout the Multiverse began to experience regular collisions one with another, with their respective planets Earth acting as the focal point. Unless the impact was averted by the destruction of either of the two colliding Earths, both intersecting realities would be destroyed when the two planets made contact. In addition, the entire Multiverse's lifespan was shortened. (New Avengers v3 #2)

While numerous different beings and groups of people from across numerous universes attempted to avert the death of everything, it all eventually came down to the final incursion between the last two surviving universes, Earth-616 and Earth-1610, which were subsequently destroyed. Only a handful of inhabitants from each universe outlived their realities, aboard life rafts that kept them in suspended animation. Among them were the Reed Richards of each universe, Mister Fantastic and the Maker. (Secret Wars v1 #1)

Eighth Cosmos

Merlyn later came to found the Captain Britain Corps tasked with the purpose of defending the Multiverse. This saw each reality being defended by a Captain Britain who was based in a version of the British Isles where they drew on Merlyn's magic and science. (Excalibur v1 #50)

Television

  • In Spider-Man, the Multiverse appeared in the setting of the 1990s animated television series.
  • In Loki, the Multiverse featured in the setting of the live-action Disney television series set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It was revealed that there once existed multiple different timelines that spawned a Multiverse where in each of these arose a figure who could control the timeline. These various incarnations came to fight one another in a Multiversal War that nearly destroyed all of reality. This was until only one survived who went by the name of He Who Remains who established the Time Variance Authority (TVA) to ensure that only one Sacred Timeline remained to prevent another Multiversal War. This was done so by removing Variants spawned from particular events with this being overseen by the TVA whilst He Who Remains created the Time-Keepers as figureheads for his rule.
  • In What If...?, the Multiverse appeared in the setting of the animated CGI anthology television series set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

  • In Marvel: Future Fight, the Multiverse appeared in the setting of the mobile video game.
  • In Marvel: Future Revolution, the Multiverse featured in the setting of the mobile video game. It was revealed that a crisis emerged due to events known as the Convergence causing two Earth's to manifest before one another leading to a collision that would destroy both of them. A.I.M. came to learn of this and various incarnations of M.O.D.O.K. looked to destroy their own Earth with an anti-matter bomb and move to the mainstream Earth with this being deemed the only way to prevent destruction. Meanwhile, the heroes formed an organization called Omega Flight headed by Hank Pym who went to construct the Convergence Engine that sought to repel the other Earth. The effort failed and in desperation the Vision merged with the machine where he used his powers to merge the two Earth's to prevent the collision. This created a new shared reality along with manifested a new substance called Convergium with the stability of this Earth being the mission of this merged world.
