Biography

Origin

Nix Uotan was a male member of the race of beings known as the Monitors that watched over the reborn Multiverse. (Countdown to Final Crisis v1 #21)

Final Crisis

Unfortunately, his Earth became the site for the gigantic showdown battle between the Monitors and Monarch's armies. With the exception of a single plant, his entire universe was destroyed when Superman-Prime ruptured Monarch's containment suit and unleashed his energies. (Countdown to Final Crisis v1 #13) Uotan was later given charge of another Earth, but it quickly was infected by the Morticoccus Virus within the Karate Kid. (Countdown to Final Crisis v1 #6) Civilization on that world was destroyed, and most of the human population were turned into gross animal hybrids, with the two exceptions of Buddy Blank, and his grandson Tommy. (Countdown to Final Crisis v1 #5) Afterwards, believing the Monitors to be incapable of regulating themselves, Nix Uotan decided to set up a team of humans to "watch the watchmen". (Countdown to Final Crisis v1 #1) The team was composed of the Atom Ray Palmer, Donna Troy, Green Lantern Kyle Rayner, and the Forager. Most recently, he was somewhat unfairly deemed by his fellow monitors to be an incompetent guardian of the Multiverse, and was sentenced to life as a Human on Earth, stripped of both his powers and his immortality. Nix Uotan is punished for failing to protect Earth-51 from destruction and is banished into the Multiverse by the other Monitors; he awakes as a human on New Earth. (Final Crisis v1 #1) Having only partial memories of his past, he begins searching for his "word of attention," a word that he believes will return him home. (Final Crisis v1 #2)

After Darkseid spreads the Anti-Life Equation to the Earth, he is captured by Darkseid's forces for being, apparently, immune to Anti-Life. There a man with hairy, dexterous fingers in the corner makes him remember his Monitor love, Weeja Dell. When the Justifiers come to get him, another man in the room solves a Rubik's Cube in 17 moves, and then emits a burst of blue light. After that it is shown that Nix has apparently received new powers as a Multiversal Monitor of the Fifth World, with monitors around his head showing the events that are happening across the Multiverse. (Final Crisis v1 #5)

Multiversity

Alone against the Gentry, Nix was seemingly defeated and ultimately corrupted by these horrible creatures, becoming the Dark Monitor. (The Multiversity v1 #1) After kneeling towards The Gentry's master, The Empty Hand, Nix Uotan was tasked to assemble a league of mad scientists, open the doors of the Orrery of Worlds for The Gentry to invade, and release the tomb of the slumbering Darkseid on Earth 51 in order "plague all of creation" in the name of their master. (The Multiversity Guidebook v1 #1)

The heroes did all they could to stop Nix Uotan to no avail, with him incapacitating Superman and wounding Captain Carrot until Aquawoman used her bioelectric power to alter his energy and the Flashes of the Multiverse united their strength to destroy his evil forcefield and release him from The Gentry's control. Now free, the Superjudge was too weak to fight the invaders who immediately arrived to destroy the universe, but the super-army he assembled took the monsters head on and quickly defeated them. A fake victory, since The Gentry's master was merely testing the Orrery of World's heroes in preparation of the real invasion, an event that he will bring forth in the future. The invasion over, the Monitor was congratulated by the Harbinger for his heroic actions alongside his partner Stubbs, proclaiming that he saved multi-trillions of lives and had the gratitude of 50 worlds, finally returning to his home universe to continue with his life. (The Multiversity v1 #2)

Convergence

The Monitor witnessed the presence of an unnatural aberration infiltrating the Multiverse, and commanded Harbinger to quickly analyze it. (Convergence v1 #6)

He came to be found and captured by the Batman Who Laughs who was a being from the Dark Multiverse. (Year of the Villain: Hell Arisen v1 #2)

Overview

Personality and attributes

Long ago, the Proto-Monitor Novu had a son who became the sole survivor of his kind when the entire Monitor race died. This youth took it upon himself to guard the entire Multiverse from unimaginable threats. (The Multiversity: The Society of Super-Heroes: Conquerors of the Counter-World v1 #1)

Powers and abilities

As a Monitor, Nix Uotan is a godlike super-being that possesses powers and abilities beyond all imagination. (The Multiversity v1 #1)

His body is completely impervious to any harm, taking the blows of some of the Orrery's most powerful beings without any harm. Only the combined power of all the Multiverse's Flashes could knock him out. (The Multiversity v1 #2)

Nix Uotan can take the form of a normal-looking teenager when he is off-duty, and willingly recall back his true Monitor form. (The Multiversity v1 #1)

Notes

  • Nix Uotan was created by Paul Dini, Sean McKeever, Keith Giffen and Jamal Igle where he made his first appearance in Countdown to Final Crisis #21 (December, 2007).
  • On a Newsrama interview, writer Grant Morrison commented, "Monitor-Mind has worked through its own Ultimate Story and spared Nix Uotan to be its sole representative and interface with the Multiverse. I see Uotan’s ‘hyperhero’ role in the DCU as a cross between the Silver Surfer and Doctor Who (particularly the Earthbound Jon Pertwee iteration of the character)."
  • In another interview, it was said that the characters last name was pronounced 'Wotan' and was derived from the name of the Norse God of Writing, Wotan, who similarly underwent great trials in order to be reborn as a purer, wiser being.

Video games

  • In Infinite Crisis, the backstory of the MOBA showed Nix Uotan as the last survivor of the Monitors who were all killed during a great betrayal made by one of their number. With their demise, Uotan served as the protector of the Multiverse but an unknown threat would create a Cataclysm that threatened to destroy all realities. As a result, he summoned Champion Protectors from various universes and had them guided by the Construct in staving off this tide of destruction.
