History

The Proemial Gods were a race of cosmic deities that formed during the beginning of the universe. Their creation came when the cosmos was filled with chaos and disarray with creation creating a group of entities to bring order to it. Thus, the Proemial Gods were formed that were tasked as caretakers that were tasked with maintaining the cosmic consonance. Each had a specific purpose in their creation and a set charge for their existence. It was during their emergence that Diableri of Chaos created Chaos Sprites to be his servants that served as his eyes and ears who spread chaos in the cosmos as part of his function. Under their guidance, the young universe was shepherded with the delicate balance was maintained between order and chaos. As the living universe expanded and flourished, life began to thrive on countless worlds with each life-form being unique and their actions in turn served cosmic consonance. Thus, the age of the Proemial Gods came to an end and their role began to diminish. However, by this point, they had gained awareness of their existence with Diableri defied his purpose being diminished and sought to remake existence in his image. Through guile, he brought Aegis and Tenebrous to his side with him corrupting the Proemial Gods purpose. Thus, many of their number fell under the sway of his dark ambition with them being set against one another. In time, the war was brought to Galactus who killed Diableri whereupon he imprisoned his compatriots Aegis and Tenebrous at the Kyln. Similarly, Antiphon the Overseer was also imprisoned despite him rejecting Diableri's dark ambition and being neutral in the conflict. Thus, the Proemial Gods were died with the surviving ones remaining trapped in a prison suited for them. (Annihilation: Heralds of Galactus v1 #2)

Such was the case for millennia until the Annihilation Wave freed the two surviving Proemial Gods. Despite their long imprisonment, both Aegis and Tenebrous still held the dark ambition of Diableri namely to enforce order as they envisioned. (Annihilation: Heralds of Galactus v1 #2) Upon being freed, they met the Mad Titan Thanos who was an ally Annihilus and he offered the two cosmic deities revenge against their jailer. The two ancient ones thus found and battled Galactus along with his former Herald the Silver Surfer where they defeated the pair. The defeated Galactus was than taken by the Annihilation Wave for use by Annihilus as he sought to conquer the universe. (Annihilation v1 #1) Initially, they struck at Galactus as an act of revenge but Galactus stated that they would strike at the universe itself in the future. In an effort to find more of their kind, Aegis and Tenebrous returned to the Kyln to find if others were imprisoned only to find the dead remains of Antiphon. It was then that they were attacked by the Silver Surfer who sought to stop their plans. He was easily defeated by the cosmic beings and near dying from the wounds he sustained in the fight. Thus, to stop the two Proemial Gods, he decided to make use of the energy of the Crunch and ruptured its power that swallowed Aegis and Tenebrous seemingly killing the two. Galactus was impressed at the Surfer's actions and his fidelity which led to him healing him of his injuries. (Annihilation: Heralds of Galactus v1 #2)

During the War of Kings, a tear in the fabric of space was formed that was a doorway into the Cancerverse allowing for the Many-Angled Ones to invade the universe. The galactic forces gathered at the Fault to repel the undying invaders with even the cosmic abstract participating in the battle. This included the two surviving Proemial Gods Aegis and Tenebrous who had somehow survived their earlier destruction. (Thanos Imperative v1 #2) Initially, they managed to hold the line but the Many-Angled Ones deployed their Galactus Engine to break the defenders and in the struggle Aegis was seemingly killed by one of the demonic Many-Angled Ones. (Thanos Imperative v1 #3)

Overview

They drew their powers from the Crunch that was the energy that birthed their kind. Such was their power that it was said to dwarf that of a Herald of Galactus. (Annihilation: Heralds of Galactus v1 #2) In fact, each of the Proemial Gods were stated to hold a power that was equal to the World Devourer. (Annihilation v1 #1) However, this same energy was capable of killing them and they were unable to sustain contact with it without being consumed by its power. (Annihilation: Heralds of Galactus v1 #2)

Initially, they were without will or awareness of their own with each of them instead fixated on their singular goal of maintaining the living universe. In time, they eventually evolved awareness leading to some gaining a dark ambition that went at odds with their original creation. (Annihilation: Heralds of Galactus v1 #2)
