History

The Protoss (Firstborn) were a humanoid race that were born on the planet Aiur at the hands of the Xel'Naga. Their origins were tied to their creators own existence in perpetuating the Infinite Cycle whereby they cultivated life to bring about the emergence of a species that were purity of form and purity of essence to bring about the rebirth of the Xel'Naga. Originally, the Protoss ancestors were a primitive race of hunters that resided on Aiur that had psionic potential. At the time, a renegade faction of Xel'Naga led by Amon arrived on the engineered world of Aiur to genetically manipulate these hunters to give rise to the Protoss. The race were deemed the purity of form and were nurtured by these Xel'Naga who eventually revealed themselves to the race and granted them technology with the Protoss considering them gods. However, the Protoss became divided as they became war-like and separated into tribes with their psionic link even diminishing as they rebelled against their creators who were forced to abandon. A group of Protoss were taken by Amon to serve as his disciples with them taking on the name of the Tal'darim whilst those that remained behind on Aiur fell into in-fighting leading to turbulent point in their history that lasted centuries and was known as the Aeon of Strife.

The Protoss later realized what they had become, and also realized that the Xel'Naga were right in abandoning them. They reunited all of their tribes under the leadership of the Conclave (except the Dark Templars, who refused to submit and were exiled), and made the Protoss Empire. Over time, the Conclave became very domineering and tradition-bound.

Several rogue tribes refused to submit themselves to the Khala as they believed it meant the loss of their individual identities and erased in order to promote the rule of the Judicator Caste. These Protoss were not hostile but their rejection of the Khala was used by the ruling Conclave as a means of painting them as renegades that threatened thei race with doom. This saw them dispatch Executor Adun who was tasked with eliminating them but he could not strike down his peaceful brethren. Thus, he instead aided in their departure from Aiur rather than continue to face persecution from the Conclave. These Protoss came to be known as the Dark Templar who left their homeworld on a functional Xel'Naga transport.

At some point, the Conclave ordered a series of experiments into robotics and making mental clones of their warriors. This resulted in the creation of the Purifiers that had a 99.8% correlation to their host personalities. However, the Purifiers were treated as simple machines and slaves by the Protoss. As a result, they engaged in a violent rebellion against their creators thaT was put down. Due to this event, the Purifier program was shut down but not destroyed with these robotic entities locked into stasis on the Cybros space station.

However, a new threat soon came as the creatures known as the Zerg- driven by the Overmind- were ever searching for the Protoss homeworld, to assimilate the Protoss into themselves.

The Zerg overran Aiur after the destruction of the first Overmind, driving the Protoss to join forces with the Dark Templars. With the help of the Dark Templars and their leader Zeratul, a Xel'Naga device helped cleanse Aiur of the Zerg.

Overview

Biology

Protoss are about three meters tall and have two glowing eyes, digitigrade legs, semi-permeable skin covered in scales, four digits on their hands (of which two are thumbs) and toes, broad chests and shoulders, and narrow waists with slim midsections. Protoss have a bony crest extending back from the crown of the head. Beneath it, emerging from the back of the head, are the nerve cords, which allow them to access their racial psionic gestalt. This gestalt is the basis of the Khala.

The Xel'Naga considered these beings to have purity of form as the Protoss are incredibly adaptable to harsh natural conditions and climates, and their strength and speed were unparalleled amongst the other races known to the Xel’Naga. Protoss even have sharp claws, which can be deadly weapons if a Protoss is caught unarmed. The Protoss used to hunt, but they did so to collect the blood and hides of animals for various purposes, not for sustenance.[1]

Protoss do not have mouths, noses, or visible ears. They are photosynthetic [1] and capable of living off of moonlight, which is merely reflected sunlight [1][2] and can go without light for extended periods of time.[2] They drink water,[3] which is absorbed through their skin.[2] The Dark Templar were able to survive on the formerly lightless world of Shakuras using unknown techniques, possibly related to the biological modifications[4] they made to themselves; another possibility is that they are able to use any form of cosmic radiation for their needs.

Protoss hear and smell through their skin, and it is believed that their primary sense is sight. Protoss have a sense of smell sharp enough to identify other Protoss, and can see very well at night. A Protoss' skin color may change when under stress in accordance to his emotions. Protoss sleep and dream in a manner similar to humans. [1]

A Protoss' average life expectancy is around a thousand years (see Matriarch Raszagal), Protoss under 300 years rarely have any significant political positions. Artanis, who is 262 years old, is considered young, despite his powerful military position.

Protoss blood is blue or purple,[1] with a slight iridescence. If a Protoss warrior is mortally wounded and his armor suit remains functional, the suit will attempt to teleport the wearer back to a safe haven. There the warrior will be given the choice of either peacefully dying, thereby adding their experience to the greater Khala, or being entombed within a walker unit (Dragoon, Immortal, Stalker, etc.) to continue fighting.

Society

Protoss religion takes its roots from the wars that plagued Aiur following the retreat of the Xel'Naga. United under the teachings of Khas after several generations of warfare, the Protoss began to adhere to Khas's teachings of the "Khala", or Path to Ascension. When Protoss warriors die in battle it is believed that they have reached the "Khala's End."

  • Khala ("Path of Ascension"): This is a personal philosophy that emphasizes inner peace and communal brotherhood. It is also reflected in the caste system of the Protoss where all the castes are different but equal and working towards the same goal.
  • Dae'Uhl ("Great Stewardship"): This is the official policy that the Protoss developed concerning other races encountered. It is a strict code that above all protects life, while simultaneously mandates an inarguable policy of non-interference with the races they watch over.

Their society were divided into a number of tribes and clans that included:

  • Ara :
  • Akilae :
  • Auriga :
  • Furinax :
  • Lost Tribe :
  • Sargas :
  • Velari :
  • Venatir :

For a time, the Protoss of Aiur were divided on caste-based lines that included:

  • Khalai :
  • Templar :
  • Judicator :

After the fall of Aiur, a new government was formed that attempted to unify the various factions of Protoss with this being known as the Daelaam.

Among the Khalai caste, one profession in those that became workers were Phasesmiths who were skilled engineers and builders of Protoss technology.

Technology

For transportation of large number of people and objects the Protoss made use of interstellar vessels known as Ark Ships that travelled across warp conduits.

Among the largest known vessels used by their race were the titanic Arkships that had been made to sustain the Protoss if they ever faced extinction.
