Biography

Origin

Anna Marie was a female human Mutant who was born the daughter of a man named Owen and a woman named Priscilla. (Rogue v3 #6)

After the incident with Cody, the young Rogue was alone and felt alienated by the community of the town. She was then approached by a dark haired woman with Rogue pulling out her shotgun to warn her away. However, the stranger meant no harm and even talked about how they were similar whereupon she changed her appearance revealing herself to be a Mutant shapeshifter. Her name was Mystique and in her the young Rogue came to find kinship that she had been lacking for much of her life. (X-Men Unlimited v1 #4)

Over the next years, Mystique and Destiny tried to train her how to control her powers as well as they could, but unfortunately they were not professional teachers. Rogue kept dreaming of a normal life, of having a boyfriend like other girls her age, and she did not want to listen to Mystique’s constant lecturing anymore. One day she was spending some time with another boy, Freddy, who dared Rogue to kiss him. Again, her powers kicked in, but Freddy was luckier than Cody. He woke up fine, though Rogue would never speak to him again. She finally realized that she could not live among normal people and decided to participate in her adoptive mother’s criminal activities. (Classic X-Men v1 #44)

It was in these times that Rogue got to know the mysterious woman known as Blindspot. Mystique and Destiny often worked together with this mutant during their criminal missions, though the three never truly liked each other. Rogue and Blindspot became close friends, mainly because they found out that Blindspot’s powers were so alike to Rogue’s that they could touch without Rogue’s absorbing her. During their final mission together, they were hired to travel to Japan and break into the house of Lord Dark Wind and steal his plans for the adamantium bonding process. In order to succeed, they had to team-up with Sunfire, who hadn’t long before discovered his mutant powers. During the mission, Sunfire was knocked out and Rogue 'borrowed' his flame powers. She happened to like flying quite a lot and would have wanted to keep these abilities, but they faded too, though not before Rogue destroyed major parts of Dark Wind’s estate. Although they hadn’t accomplished their actual mission, the Brotherhood still classified this as a victory and to celebrate it Blindspot took a photo of Mystique, Rogue and Sunfire with Dark Wind’s burning property in the background. Back home, though, Mystique had enough of Blindspot and kicked her out of the group. To protect herself, Blindspot erased not only Mystique’s but also Rogue’s and everyone else’s memory of her to move on without being recognized. (Rogue v3 #11)

In time, Destiny received precognitive visions that warned her about the Avenger known as Ms. Marvel one day costing Rogue her soul. She discussed it with Mystique, who then vowed to not allow this, even if it would kill her. In the room next door, Rogue overheard only the last part and decided to hunt down Ms. Marvel herself to protect her mother. (Marvel Super-Heroes v3 #11) When Mystique’s Brotherhood of Evil Mutants made their public debut, Destiny had convinced Mystique to keep Rogue back from the mission as a failsafe. Destiny proved to be correct, for all of the Brotherhood, save for Mystique, were captured in their first mission by the X-Men. (Uncanny X-Men v1 #142) Somewhat later, Rogue learned that Carol Danvers had returned and was now living in San Francisco. Unaware that this would actually cause the danger that Destiny had predicted, she tracked Danvers down and battled her on the Golden Gate Bridge. Carol resisted Rogue’s absorption effect like nobody before and something went wrong. Rogue found that, somehow, her metabolism had fully absorbed and permanently retained Ms. Marvel's mind and powers. Fearing for her own sanity and identity, as she kept hearing Carol's voice in her head, Rogue threw Danvers’ body off the bridge, hoping that her physical death would also kill the voice in her head. Luckily for Danvers, she was rescued by Spider-Woman, who brought the comatose woman to a hospital, where later Professor Charles Xavier could partially restore her memories. (Marvel Super-Heroes v3 #11) Under Mystique’s guidance, Rogue proceeded to attack the Avengers one by one, absorbing the powers of Thor and Captain America and, along with Raven impersonating Nick Fury, she tried to free the rest of the Brotherhood from prison. However, the remaining Avengers and Spider-Woman arrived in time to prevent the breakout. As most of her stolen powers were already fading, Rogue escaped with Mystique to avoid being captured as well. (Avengers Annual v1 #10)

X-Men

Losing a grip on her powers, Rogue came to find that the slightest touch could transfer a person's mind to her leaving her unsure which were her memories and which belonged to another person. She had tried to explain to Mystique but she could not understand leading to Rogue seeking out Charles Xavier. This saw her arriving at the X-Mansion where she was at first greeted with hostility but Professor X came to listen to her words and offer his help. At that time, Binary was staying with the X-Men and when she returned to them she found Rogue who she immediately attacked. Initially, Rogue fought back but was unsure who her attacker was until she revealed herself to be Carol Danvers who wanted revenge. However, Professor X stopped the fighting by claiming that Rogue was under his protection with the X-Men divided over his actions. Some even stated that that they would leave the X-Men if Rogue was allowed to stay with them but Xavier reminded them of their duty to help all Mutants. This ultimately led to Carol Danvers feeling betrayed by them and she decided to leave their ranks. (Uncanny X-Men v1 #171)

Looking to help her, Professor Xavier came to take her to Dr. Richard Palance a noted geneticist in order to get his aid in helping her control her powers. (X-Men v2 #194)

She then oversaw Sabretooth who was injected with nano-Sentinels by Beast to keep him under control. Rogue then took him out of Cyclops custody where she decided to take her independent strike team to deal with the Children of the Vault. (X-Men v2 #192)

While on the alien planet Rogue found herself in the middle of a battle between two races and in an act of self-defense, she attracted the attention of both races and fled the battlefield. While trying to find food she almost ate something toxic, if not for Chahr who warned her of the effect of the fruit. Chahr asked for Rogue's help to defeat the other race, called The Swarm, and in return they would do all they could to help her return to her world. That night the Swarm attacked her shelter and while fighting them she used up all Ms. Marvel's powers. (X-Men: Legacy v1 #271) The Swarm attempted to assimilate her, but due to Rogue's experience fighting off foreign control and maintaining her state of mind, they failed and resolved to bring her before the Swarm's Queen. The Queen also attempted to assimilate Rogue but in doing so, Rogue was able to access a locked away memory in the Swarm's Hive Mind. This memory showed the Queen meeting with the king of Chahr's people. The two monarchs agreed to make war in order to make sure that their populations stayed thin enough for them to able to continue living off the planet. (X-Men: Legacy v1 #272) The Queen was enraged and attempted to kill Rogue, as well as exiling the Swarm member that had brought her there. Rogue and the exiled Swarm managed to escape and bonded together in an effort to survive. In the end, Rogue brought peace to both of the two races by showing the conspiracy between the King and the Queen. As promised, Chahr gave Rogue an item which brought Rogue back to Earth. (X-Men: Legacy v1 #273)

Uncanny Avenger

She was visited the grave of Professor X when she found the Scarlet Witch at the scene. Wanda's presence angered Rogue who had not forgiven the Scarlet Witch for her role in the Decimation leading to a brief fight. The pair were then interrupted by the S-Men who managed to overwhelm the pair and took them captive. (Uncanny Avengers v1 #1) Taken hostage, she was brought to the Red Skull's secret base where she managed to escape and found the Scarlet Witch who was being brainwashed by the Nazi supervillain. During this time, they discovered that the Skull had stolen Charles Xavier's body and removed the brain where he transplanted his telepathic powers to himself. This led to the pair being captured when they attempted to escape the facility. (Uncanny Avengers v1 #2) The two were then forced to join in an attack on New York City where their presence along with the Red Skull's powers were used to heighten tensions against Mutants. Several X-Men along with the Avengers arrived at the scene to battle the S-Men leading to Rogue and the Scarlet Witch being freed from his control. The pair then urged their comrades that only a jointed Avengers and X-Men force were able to stop the Red Skull. (Uncanny Avengers v1 #3) Ultimately, they were able to stop the Nazi supervillain though he managed to escape with Rogue being injured though expected to make a full recovery. She decided to stay among the newly formed Unity Squad consisting of Avengers and X-Men that was to be a symbol of working together between the two superpowered communities. Rogue stayed partly because this was part of Xavier's dream but also because she wanted to keep an eye on the Scarlet Witch who she saw as being too dangerous to roam free. (Uncanny Avengers v1 #4)

As the Infinity Watch arrived to help the Avengers fight the Chronos Corps, Havok and Sunfire confronted and ultimately defeated Kang, who was forced to flee along with his soldiers. After the crisis was over, Rogue was in the process of being driven mad by all the heroes she had absorbed. The Scarlet Witch cast a spell to return those powers to their owners, although Rogue still retained the powers and the very essence she absorbed from Wonder Man. (Uncanny Avengers v1 #22) She had also lost her ability to freely touch others. (Uncanny Avengers v1 #23)

Their first adventure took them to Counter-Earth to look for Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch. They were unexpectedly captured by the citizens of Counter-Earth and Rogue was stripped of Wonder Man's consciousness, but not his powers, by the Master Scientist. (Uncanny Avengers v2 #1)

Following Steve Rogers' retirement, Rogue became the field leader of the Avengers Unity Division, although she accepted Steve Rogers' official oversight and recommendations for membership, such as Deadpool. (Uncanny Avengers v3 #1)

Mr. and Mrs. X

When the Unity Squad disbanded, Rogue returned to the X-Mansion where she called Iceman to join her in forming a new X-Men team to help rescue Kitty Pryde after she was arrested due to the manipulations of anti-Mutant activist Lydia Nance. (X-Men: Gold v2 #23)

Not long afterwards, Kitty and Colossus held a wedding ceremony after becoming engaged; however, Kitty backed down at the last second and left Piotr at the altar. During the would-be reception, Gambit became inspired by Storm's words on marriage, and decided to propose to Rogue on the spot. She accepted, and they were married shortly afterwards by the rabbi hired to officiate the marriage that was originally planned for that day. (X-Men: Gold v2 #30)

The pair later fought with Deadpool for custody of the mysterious egg which was when Technet arrived looking to claim it for the bounty on it. This led to the two X-Men and Deadpool allying with one another to defeat their foes who were forced to flee. During an argument over control over the prize, the egg hatched where it became a duplicate of Rogue. (Mr. and Mrs. X v1 #2)

She explained to Gambit that she brought them there since Mojo wanted a famous superhero couple for his newest programming, but Spiral needed a great thief to steal something for her, but she was unaware that Rogue's abilities had changed. Spiral wouldn't tell Gambit what she wanted stolen, but if he helped her, she promised to help Rogue with her powers and the couple's escape. (Mr. and Mrs. X v1 #8)

In her mind Rogue goes over the important events in her life, when she kissed Cody, fighting Ms. Marvel, her relationship with Gambit and her time on Genosha. She comes to the conclusion that she had been unknowingly limiting her own abilities out of personal fear, which also perverted her from having a relationship with Gambit. Waking-up Rogue tells Gambit that she's regain full control of her abilities. After defeating Mojo, Gambit gives Spiral the Coeur Enroulé, after merging with it, she sends them back to Earth. Not realizing that they've been gone for months and the events with the X-Men, but before Rogue can check to see what's happen, Gambit doesn't want to take any chances before something else interrupts them and the two spend the next few hours in bed together. Rogue then checks her phone to see that she has several messages from Carol Danvers and goes to her aid. (Mr. and Mrs. X v1 #9)

House of X

She joined the new X-Men team which came to reside from their headquarters called the Treehouse which was situated in New York City. Their first mission involved combating an extraterrestrial mech that had crashed into the city and attempted to kill everyone. The X-Men at first struggled in defeating their foe but then formed their own mecha that defeated it with their efforts leading to them being hailed as heroes. (X-Men v6 #1)

Overview

Personality and attributes

The people in her home town were the ones that called her Rogue which Anna-Marie said was the nicest thing they could say about her. (X-Men Unlimited v1 #4) At one point, she came to operate under the name of Anna Raven. (X-Treme X-Men v1 #33)

Her parents were a man named Owen and a woman called Priscilla. (Rogue v3 #6) Her mother had a younger sister named Carrie who was Anna-Marie's maternal aunt who helped raise her. (Rogue v3 #2)

She came to meet Mystique shortly after the incident with Cody when she approached Rogue and revealed her true nature. Mystique came to offer her kinship and a much needed hug for the young Rogue who was told that everything would become better. For the first few years together, Anna-Marie swore that Mystique cared for her and never did anything to harm her. (X-Men Unlimited v1 #4) In time, Rogue came to love Mystique like she was her own mother. (Uncanny X-Men v1 #171) Within the Brotherhood, she came to serve as Mystique's protégé and learnt from her. (Avengers Annual v1 #10)

Powers and abilities

Rogue was born a Mutant who had the power to absorb the powers, traits and memories of others through physical touch. Her powers could not work if her target wore a costume as she required direct skin contact. In addition, her power could only work on living beings with mechanical beings being immune to her touch. Furthermore, she was unable to absorb the powers of a person that was composed of sentient energy. (Avengers Annual v1 #10)

On one occasion, Rogue came to absorb the mind of another person which resulted in her possessing two diametrically opposed thought patterns which could create an interference effect that could prevent a telepath from reading her mind. (Uncanny X-Men v1 #171)

It was said that her mind had become partitioned from the personalities she had involuntarily absorbed into herself. The effect of these partitions had paralysed the development of her powers and froze them in the nascent stage. Thus, they were never able to develop as they were meant to do so. This was until her mind was reintegrated with her powers by Professor X allowing them to reach their mature stage of development. As a result, her mind was able to find a natural state after years of imposed fragmentations. The process was said to be rapid and inevitable due to the maturation having been delayed for so long but that it would also be traumatic and draining on Rogue. This allowed her to touch another person without involuntarily absorbing them and provided her a great level of control than she ever experienced before in her life. (X-Men: Legacy v1 #224)

If contact was made for too long then the transfer came to be permanent. Its for this reason that she trained herself so that she only took enough from a person so that its effects were temporary. (Avengers Annual v1 #10)

She was able to absorb multiple powers from different people that she could use to remarkable effect as she attained an amalgam form. An example of this was her briefly absorbing Colossus and Nightcrawlers powers where she took on a mixture of their characteristics as well as abilities. Rogue was able to also use particular techniques of a person such as using Nightcrawler's teleportation to remove a section of an opponent to badly damage them. (Uncanny X-Men v1 #194)

For a time, she came to permanently absorb the powers and memories of Carol Danvers. (Avengers Annual v1 #10)

Rogue's powers came to be greatly enhanced by Pandemic via Strain 88 that made the effect of her touch instantly permanent and all-consuming. (X-Men v2 #198)

Her powers later came to change as she gained the power to absorb the abilities of others in proximity to her without the need for physical contact. Initially, she lost control of this power but it was said that she had simply evolved whereupon she would gain a better control over this ability in time. (Mr. and Mrs. X v1 #5)

Mystique was said to had trained her on how to fight. (Avengers Annual v1 #10)

Initially, she used to serve as a member of Mystique's Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. (Avengers Annual v1 #10)
