Biography
Ryu (Japanese: リュウ, Hepburn: Ryū) was a male human who as a young child awas orphaned and left with no memories of his parents. He came to be found and adopted by a man named Gouken who raised Ryu in his secluded dojo and trained Ryu in the ways of his martial arts. Ryu used to watch Gouken, Goutetsu and Akuma train with each other. Sometime afterwards, Gouken would later train his best friend's spoiled son, Ken Masters. Ken served not only as a sparring partner, but also gave Ryu a friend in the form of a boy his own age. Ryu looked up to Gouken as a father figure, and regards Ken as his best friend and surrogate brother, a relationship which continued into their adult years. When Ryu turned 23 years old, Gouken believed that Ryu was ready to travel the world in order to test and hone his martial skills against the best fighters from around the world. After Ryu and Ken's training was complete, Ken casually asked Ryu which of the two will be the most famous martial artist first. While Ken went to USA, Ryu travels to Thailand alone, in order to face Sagat who held the title of Emperor of Muay Thai and was said to be the strongest martial artist.
After arriving in Thailand, Ryu went about finding a way of challenging Sagat to a fight and went about creating a plan whereby his opponent could not refuse. By defeating many Muay Thai fighters, he believed it would eventually reach Sagat's ears. If successful, Sagat would show himself in order to defend Muay Thai's honor. Ryu defeated 20 Muay Thai users, and yelled at the fighters how allowing a stranger to tarnish Muay Thai's reputation is an embarrassment, Sagat heard Ryu and his fighting spirit burned. He told Ryu that he would show him real Muay Thai, and the two would clash. However, Ryu, defeated Sagat with a nearly-fatal Shoryuken that not only knocks Sagat unconscious, but also left a great scar. After regaining consciousness, Sagat swore to get revenge against Ryu.
Overview
Personality and attributes
After learning of the Satsui no Hado, he came to believe that this dark power was responsible for his victory over Sagat. This led to Ryu to reject this ki as he knew he could not control its dark power and was unwilling to kill anyone or risk losing his compassion and humanity.
If he succumbed to the Satsui no Hado, he became Evil Ryu (殺意の波動に目覚めたリュウ Satsui no Hadō ni Mezameta Ryū?, "Ryu with the Surge of Killing Intent Awakened") and was also known as the Satsui Ryu (殺意リュウ Satsui Ryū?, lit. Killing Intent Ryu). Evil Ryu was shown to be cold and conceited where he was obsessed with fighting in order to prove he was the strongest. He was a more demonic and murderous-driven being where he had purged all traces of his former honorable self and showed sociopathic traits. He enjoys absolute power, and lacks any sort of empathy or respect, and despises what he perceives as weakness from all of humanity, such as love, family, justice and vengeance. He is also extremely brutal towards other fighters in general, especially to those that oppose him, and tends to mock them with a sadistic sense of humor. Evil Ryu also refers to himself as heartless and nothing more but a demon and will seek out and murder any opponent in a fight, regardless of their age and condition. He displays a very dangerous bloodlust, even borderline sadism and ritualistic belligerence that almost borders on cannibalism.

Ryu was able to also tap into a power known as the Satsui no Hado (殺意の波動 Satsui no Hadō?, "Surge of Murderous Intent") that was a form of ki rooted in the darker aspects of human instinct.
The Satsui no Hado would develop sentience and came to manifest as its own entirely separate, physical entity, naming itself Kagenaru Mono (影ナル者 Kagenaru Mono?, "The Shadowed One"). Also known as Kage (影 Kage?, "Shadow", pronounced as "KA-gé"), he was very similar to Ryu in appearance as both seeming to stand at the same height, although Kage appears to have a somewhat higher degree of musculature as well as a considerably darker skin-tone. In addition to this, Kage's irises are red and luminescent whilst his sclerae are jet black and the eyes are permanently encircled by a dark ring.

- Ryu was created by Takashi Nishiyama and featured in the setting of the Street Fighter universe.
- Evil Ryu was originally introduced in a 1996 Street Fighter Zero manga series by Masahiko Nakahira and later adapted in the Street Fighter canon by Capcom.
- In Undisputed Street Fighter: A 30th Anniversary Retrospective, mangaka Masahiko Nakahira, the creator of Evil Ryu, wrote his own take on Ryu during his career, aiming for a more serious take on Ryu's personality in his works.
- Taliesin Jaffe noted, "The whole idea of Ryu in the first place is that he's a Lancelot character, and I was prepared for the corruption of that character from the very beginning. We knew we were gonna go there, and actually part of the first audition for Ryu was, I had a couple lines I wanted them to read specifically in that darker vein."
