Television

  • In Gotham, Sarah Essen was a regular in the live-action television series where she was portrayed by actor Zabryna Guevara. This version of the character was Captain of the Gotham City Police Department Homicide Squad making her the boss of James Gordon and Harvey Bullock. After Commissioner Loeb resigned, Essen was made the new Commissioner of the Gotham City Police Department. Commissioner Essen was later murdered by Jerome Veleska who headed the group of insane criminals calling themselves "The Maniax".

  • In Batman: Year One, Sarah Essen appeared in the animated adaptation of the comic storyline where she was portrayed by actor Katee Sackhoff. She was a new detective assigned to the Gotham City Police Department under Lieutenant James Gordon who was a rising in popularity. Gordon was assigned the case at capturing the mysterious masked vigilante known as Batman that had appeared in Gotham City. Detective Essen was assigned as part of a trap to draw him out but he never emerged. During their investigation, she told Gordon that she believed that the newly returned Bruce Wayne was likely Batman but Jim did not believe her. In their time together, the pair became attracted to one another and ended having an affair. In an attempt to blackmail Gordon, Commissioner Loeb threatened to expose the affair to his wife Barbara but Jim refused to back down. He then broke his relationship with Essen who decided to transfer out of town with Gordon later confessing about the relationship to his pregnant wife who forgave him.
