Shuri (Marvel)

Shuri is a female comic character who features in Marvel Comics.

Biography

Shuri was the daughter of T'Chaka and the younger sister of T'Challa. (Black Panther v5 #2)

Her uncle S'Yan became the new Black Panther following the death of her father T'Chaka where he participated in the yearly Wakandan tournaments that allowed for challengers to fight him for the throne. Shuri's mother made strict orders to prevent her daughter to participating in these rituals though she was participating in training for the right to become Black Panther. However, one day during a challenge she snuck out and made her way passed the guards into the arena. She was about to enter the ring when the previous contender was defeated and fell on top of her thus pinning her to the ground. At that point, a masked warrior entered the ring and battled the Black Panther. S'Yan was defeated and it was revealed that the masked warrior was none other than her own brother T'Challa with Shuri feeling that she was cheated from the mantle. (Black Panther v4 #2)

Wakanda would later come attack from Ulysses Klaw and his mercenaries among which included superpowered beings. Shuri by this point was visiting the Vibranium mines when it came under attack from the Radioactive Man. In this time, Shuri defeated the supervillain by using the stolen Ebony Blade. (Black Panther v4 #6)

As queen of Wakanda, she was involved in treaty negotiations with Namor who offered to end the bloodshed between their two nations in exchange for refuge in Wakanda whenever he desired. This same treaty was first presented to T'Challa, who originally rejected it. Like her brother, Shuri also declined Namor's offer stating that the conflict between the two nations was no ordinary war, and that the fate of both Wakanda or Atlantis hung in the balance; in the end, one of them would face total destruction. While Namor was celebrating the fabricated peace with T'Challa, T'Challa revealed the truth, and Namor left to find Atlantis a ruin by Shuri's forces after an attack by Wakanda. (New Avengers v3 #7)

Defeated by the Cabal, she was actually trapped in a state of living death. (Black Panther v6 #8) Her brother T'Challa then worked tirelessly to find a way of saving Shurithough all his efforts had failed. (Black Panther v6 #1) Seemingly dead, her soul actually travelled to the Djalia that was a transcendent plane that represented Wakanda's collective memory. (Black Panther v6 #2)

She was later brought back to the world of the living when T'Challa retrieved her soul with the help of Manifold. (Black Panther v6 #8)

Afterwards, the Earth fell under the threat of a global attack from Knull the god of the Symbiotes. The creatures encased the world where the parasitic beings looked to take over the natives as hosts. One of the areas under attack was Wakanda itself whose border shield was unable to stop the creatures breaching it. Her brother then arrived after having been forced to retreat from one of the fronts where he revealed that Storm had been taken as a host. He decided on an ambitious plan to save his kingdom that involved delaying the Symbiotes long enough for him to use Klaw's sonic weapon to resonate with the border shield. To provide time for him, Shuri used an experimental techno-magical ritual to create duplicates of herself to help fight back against the invaders. These mystical clones of herself were taken over by the Symbiotes leading to the real Shuri falling under their control. She was then sent to capture her brother but T'Challa managed to put his plans into action where he caused a sonic blast of such power that it freed the entire Wakanda region from Symbiote control. After her brother was incapacitated, Shuri came to adopt the mantle of the Black Panther. (Black Panther v5 #5)

As royalty, she enjoyed the same upbringing, education and training as her brother T'Challa. (Black Panther v5 #2)

She had a long desire to become the Black Panther and participated in training for the rite. (Black Panther v4 #2)

As a Wakandan royal, she enjoyed the benefits of diplomatic immunity when she operated abroad in another country. (Black Panther v5 #1)

Shuri had long trained to be the Black Panther and later took part in the trials after her brother was wounded. This saw her journeying into the sacred lands to acquire the heart shaped herb which she consumed allowing her to commune with the Panther Goddess Bast. Once there, she had to prove herself worthy of the deity who granted her blessing for Shuri to become the new Black Panther. (Black Panther v5 #4)

She was provided a range of highly advanced equipment that she could use during her missions. Among her weapons arsenal included holopods, spider bites, desert sand and shok-nets that packed a punch ten times greater than military grade tasers. The spider bites were orb shaped devices that were launched at targets where they unleashed a powerful electrical shock that rendered enemies unconscious. Whilst the desert sands were self-contained microburst EMPs that disrupted electrical systems. Other gear included Kevlar and spider-silk mesh gloves with claws that were Adamantium tipped over Vibranium shells. (Black Panther v5 #8) Another device were small spherical golden spheres known as Desert Suns that generated intense heat which leached moisture from a persons body leaving them badly dehydrated. From the Djalla, she was imbued with supernatural powers and trained in their use by a griot spirit. (Black Panther v6 #11) Shuri was capable of transforming her body into a flock of black birds. (Black Panther v6 #9) Alternatively, she could assume the form of one enormous black bird. (Black Panther v6 #11)

This included an alchemical spell whereby she could create numerous duplicates of herself allowing her to in multiple locations simultaneously. (King in Black: Black Panther v1 #1)

Shuri had access to the Prototype Vault that contained a range of new experimental technology and equipment. (King in Black: Black Panther v1 #1)

As the Black Panther, she had access to a support system of aides and workers with these forming the Princess Regent Intelligence Division Executives (P.R.I.D.E.). (Black Panther v5 #9) She served as the head of the Wakanda School of Alternative Studies which taught superpowered Wakandans the use of their powers and abilities. (Infinity: The Hunt v1 #1)

Notes

• Shuri was created by Reginald Hudlin and John Romita, Jr. where she made her first appearance in Black Panther v4 #2 (May, 2005).

Alternate Versions

• In Exiles v3 #11 (2018), an alternate parallel world version of Shuri was shown to exist within the Multiverse. This version's older brother T'Challa was killed and she became a villain where she adopted the name of Killmonger. She was recruited by the Watchers to be part of a team to hunt down the Exiles.

• In Black Panther, Shuri appeared as a supporting cast member in the animated web series where she was voiced by actress Kerry Washington.
• In Avengers: Secret Wars, Shuri appeared in the animated television series in the episode "The Eye of Agamotto" Part 1 where she was voiced by actress Kimberly Brooks. She was the younger sister of T'Challa and thus a Princess of Wakanda who had studied from Oxford, had multiple PhD's and headed the Wakanda School of Alternative Studies. Shuri opposed her brother being abroad and operating as a hero whilst neglecting his duties as king as he refused to delegate duties to her.

• In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Shuri made a number of appearances in the shared continuity setting.
  • In Black Panther, Shuri made her first live-action film appearance where she was portrayed by actor Letitia Wright.
  • In Avengers: Infinity Wars, Shuri appeared in the live-action film where she was portrayed by once again by actor Letitia Wright.
  • In Avengers: Endgame, Shuri appeared in the live-action film where she was once more portrayed by actor Letitia Wright.

• In Marvel Heroes, Shuri appeared as a playable character through an Enhanced Costume available for Black Panther in the setting of the MMORPG video game.
• In Marvel: Future Fight, Shuri based on her MCU incarnation appeared as a playable character in the mobile video game.
• In Marvel's Avengers, Shuri appeared as a supporting NPC in the setting of the video game's DLC 'War for Wakanda' where she was voiced by actress Erica Luttrell.
