Thunderbolts

After the institution of the Superhuman Registration Act, the government had the authority to force any super-powered being to register. To assist them, they formed the Thunderbolt initiative that consisted largely of supervillains who had nano-chains to force their compliance on missions. Headed by Norman Osborn, both Moonstone and Songbird remained on the team to aid them in their operations. Osborn forced Songbird to work for him and believed that she had a good public image for the Thunderbolts. The team were then deployed to capture Jack Flag who was refusing to surrender to the authorities. In the battle, Flag managed to use his skills to outwit the Thunderbolts with Songbird being knocked out by a makeshift shield. Despite his attempted escape, Flag was ultimately captured and taken back to Thunderbolt Mountain in order to be transferred to a prison facility. (Thunderbolts v1 #111)

She then confronted the rampaging Green Goblin who was attacking guards in the mountain and anyone that opposed them. This led to a battle between the pair as their hatred of each other was let loose. Their fight ended in a draw as the two knocked each other unconscious. Despite this happening, Bullseye managed to regain consciousness from his nanosurgery and eliminated the group of captive telepaths that were manipulating everyone on the Thunderbolts into fighting each other in order to eliminate them. With them killed, their manipulations ended and events returned back to normal at Thunderbolts Mountain with Director Osborn covering up his activity as the Green Goblin as being the result of telepathic tampering by the captives. However, Songbird knew the truth and with this knowledge she managed to use this leverage to get Osborn to make her the leader of the Thunderbolts along with them being dedicated to search and rescue missions from this point onwards. (Thunderbolts v1 #121)

Bullseye was ready to kill her but Melissa managed to use a sonic attack to get some distance from him. However, the supervillain managed to damage her sonic harness which prevented her from flying away. In desperation, she escaped into the vents and blocked the entry hatch to stop pursuit. Unknown to her pursuers, she actually managed to reach the Zeus where she used her back-up harness to restore her abilities. She then used her powers to turn the entirety of Thunderbolts Mountain into a giant transmitter allowing her to overhear Bullseye working with Moonstone. The entirety of the remaining Thunderbolts team had been given orders by Osborn to eliminate Melissa. Finding this out, she had the Zeus attack the command centre in the hope of killing Moonstone and Bullseye. The Zeus was then attacked by Venom causing it to crash where she managed to knock Gargan to the side. Songbird was then ambushed by Bullseye who attempted to kill her but he was knocked out by the Swordsman. Melissa was thankful but he said that he only did it to spite Osborn and said that he would tell the others that Songbird had died in the resultant explosion of the Zeus where he warned her to stay low as a dark reign was coming to the world. (Thunderbolts v1 #127)
