Flying Stag was the greatest warrior and hunter of the '''Wolf Clan''' of the Nations in North America where he came to be honoured and revered by his people. Around this time, he came to be romantically involved with another member of the tribe named '''White Fawn''' whose father had even agreed for the two to be wed. As a young sachem, he came to receive a message that said that the royaneh of the Nations was said and a new chief was to be chosen to replace them. A token was provided with the message that allowed the Wolf Clan to participate in the trials. '''Grey Eagle''' who was the medicine man of the clan decided that Flying Stag was to go to the Council of Elders and compete for the position of royaneh. He journeyed on the Moon of the Black Calf where he fell into a trap that Flying Stag quickly determined was from rival clan chiefs that wanted to eliminate him from the contest. Flying Stag then made a vow to relinquish his name and the chance to become supreme chief where he dedicated himself to his people as a whole to remove acts of evil among them. The Manitou seemingly answered when a meteor crashed by Flying Stag and whilst unconscious he was exposed to its radiation. Unconscious, he dreamed of the Great Spirit who stated that Flying Stag would be his servant and serve as a protector of the Nation's with him being afforded superhuman powers to aid him. He came to free himself where he was tasked with getting a piece of the meteor to wear for all time and abandon his former identity as he became a servant of Manitou under the identity of Super-Chief. During his travel to the Council house, he was told to fell a black buffalo and fashion a costume for himself from its hide to help mask his identity. He then went to the camp for the trial where with his natural talents he bested the other clan participants that sought to remove him from the competition. Super-Chief succeeded and was crowned the new royaneh of the Nation's but the disgruntled rival chieftains plotted his downfall. One caused an avalanche and the other started a fire with Super-Chief reliant on the stone to empower him to end both dangers to the tribal lands. It was then that the third chieftain brought the Nation's enemies the Algonkins to attack where the stone's power faded but Super-Chief led his people in defending their land and driving off the invaders. Hailed a hero, he proclaimed that the rival chieftains be banished for three days for their betrayal and told the people that he would come whenever danger threatened them. He then departed and resumed his Flying Stag identity where he returned him but was told by White Fawn that as he seemingly failed to attend the trials that she was not allowed to marry him. According to a vision, Super-Chief was granted strength that was a thousand times that of the bear, speed greater than the swiftest deer and a leaping prowess beyond that of a wolf. Upon accepting the meteor stone, he came to be known as '''''Saganowahna''''' but he was also known as the Super-Chief. Part of this involved him having to give up his name, his personal glory and even the woman he loved. It was said that the stone glowed when it empowered the wearer but it was only for a limited amount of time with this being 20,000 paces which was about an hour. (All-Star Western v1 #117) His senses were also increased by the amulet such as him possessing super-hearing and allowing him to hear those that called for his aid even across great distances. Overview

The first Super-Chief wore a black buffalo raiment that hid his identity from others. (All-Star Western v1 #117) He tended to keep these in a hidden spot such as heavy rocks where only he with his great strength was able to lift and access. (All-Star Western v1 #118)

The first Super-Chief had superhuman physical powers beyond those of any other man. These were the result of a meteor that crashed on Earth whose radiation affected the man that became Super-Chief. It was believed that these were given to him by the Great Spirit Manitou who had selected him to combat evil and lawlessness among the Indian tribes. According to a vision, Super-Chief was granted strength that was a thousand times that of the bear, speed greater than the swiftest deer and a leaping prowess beyond that of a wolf. Upon accepting the meteor stone, he came to be known as Saganowahna but he was also known as the Super-Chief. Super-Chief's strength was strong to allow him to make mighty leaps thus allowing him to travel across great distances. With the stone, the user was thus empowered for a single hour in a day with its power being recharged by the next day. (All-Star Western v1 #118) The stone was also said to be able to absorb some impact from energy weapons. (All-Star Western v1 #119)
