History
The Techno-Organic Virus
Long ago, a time travelling Cable battled the forces of a young En Sabah Nur in the past where he succeeded in killing the immortal Mutant. However, his Techno-Organic virus infested blood mingled with Apocalypse thus resurrecting him. This power gave him the ability to communicate with technology and he used this power to interface with the Ship in China. (Cable & Deadpool v1 #27)
Apocalypse came to infect the infant Nathan Summers with a genetic virus intended to kill the child but was saved after a woman from Clan Askani took him to the future. (X-Factor v1 #68)
A young Hong Kong Mutant child named Paradigm who had technokinetic abilities was deliberately infected with the Techno-Organic Virus to test its effect on his biology. It attempted to overwrite his form into that of its alien creators but he asserted dominance over it and gained control over the material as it transformed his body. This gave him the ability to manipulate his substance to achieve various feats. (X-Force v1 #89)
Overview
Infection resulted in progressive degradation of the cohesive structure of the hosts fundamental DNA matrix. In effect, this resulted in cells losing the ability to replicate themselves leaving the current generation of cells to be the last and as they expired there were no new cells to replace them. (X-Factor v1 #68)
Variations of the virus included:
- Transmode Virus :
- Apocalypse Strand : a particular variation used by the servants of Apocalypse where they permeated the cells and appeared organic but were far more complex. The growth rate of these cells stemmed from a supply of blood that gave them the ability to rewrite the hosts DNA turning it into alien technology. (X-Force v3 #4)

Notes
- The Techno-Organic Virus was created by Louise Simonson and Rob Liefeld where it made its first appearance in New Mutants v1 #86 (February, 1990).
- It was actually identified by name in X-Factor #68 (July, 1991).

Video games
- In Marvel Heroes, the Techno-Organic Virus featured as a special passive ability of Cable that activated when the player was killed. Once dead, the character was wrapped in a Techno-Organic cocoon that healed the player at the site they were killed after which the ability had a cool down period before it could be used again.
