Origins

Thanagar

Thousands of years ago, the people of Thanagar came to learn of the unique properties of Nth Metal native to their world. They decided to harness it and used that knowledge to conquer the stars thus creating the time period of the Old Empire. (JSA v1 #23)

After the Tormock War, the Thanagarians were in the process of rebuilding their world which was when the Sineater Onimar Synn arose where he killed the ruling council and took over Thanagar. He then turned the inhabitants into his undead Dark Wingmen that served as his soldiers in taking over the world. (JSA v1 #23)

Post-Flashpoint

Following the Flashpoint, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events.

At some point, they also settled on the unique world of Thanagar Prime whose existence was whispered in the universes oldest myths and legends. It was always intended as a refuge for the Thanagarians in case Thanagar was ever destroyed. (Justice League v4 #14)

Overview

Locations on the planet included:

  • Thanaldar : a city that took a century to build with many of its builders working that began the work also finishing it with the settlement housing the planetary ruling council. It was noted for being the home city of Katar Hol and Shayera Thal. (Shadow War of Hawkman v1 #1)
  • Thalrassa : a sky city on Thanagar that contained the Towers of Justice. (JSA v1 #23)
  • Medal Mint :
  • Isle of Chance :
  • Dormor :
  • Corvis City : said to be the most populated settlement on the planet. (Justice League United v1 #9)
  • Medal Mint : site that produced the bulk of the reward medals for valorous Thanagarian citizens, particularly the Thanagarian Wingmen. (Brave and the Bold v1 #42)
  • Sea of Scythia : located near a series of caves and grottos. (Brave and the Bold v1 #42)
  • Veil of Valmorra : a giant waterfall situated on the world. (Brave and the Bold v1 #42)
  • Plain of Bones : noted to be an arid patch of unforgiving land. (JSA v1 #24)

An element unique to the world was Nth Metal that served as the life blood for Thanagar. (JSA v1 #23)

A number of native lifeforms inhabited the planet which included:

  • Brontadons : large reptilian dangerous beasts noted for being difficult to subdue and had twin brains beneath the eyes. (Brave and the Bold v1 #34)
  • Kasta Bird : a flying Pteranodon reptilian whose claws were poisonous and a single scratch bringing death to others. (Brave and the Bold v1 #34)
  • Kalava Bird : these were small feathered flying birds of Thanagar were completely unlike the species on Earth. (Brave and the Bold v1 #34)
  • Razor Birds : scavengers that ripped the flesh of beings on the Plain of Bones. (JSA v1 #24)
  • Kolamoran Slug : these massive prehistoric gastropod-like worms able to completely destroy entire building complexes but were thought extinct for centuries. (Savage Hawkman v1 #0)

One of the moons of Thanagars was known as Ryngor. (Justice League United Annual v1 #1)

On Thanagar Prime, the Thanagarians had transformed the planet into a stronghold and had been built to house the greatest secrets of the universe. The world was encompassed by a golden raptor wing superstructure around it and light by binary suns. These great wings kept the world safe by leaving it out of phase from the universe and also allowing it to occupy multiple points in space simultaneously. (Justice League v4 #14)

Notes

  • Thanagar was created by Gardner Fox and Joe Kubert where it made its first appearance in Brave and the Bold v1 #34 (March 1961).
  • In Action Comics v1 #757 (1999), a simulation showed a world where Kal-El's rocketship landed on Thanagar instead of Earth with him being found by Paran Katar. Paran was a scientist who discovered that the Kryptonian would develop superhuman powers under Thanagar's yellow son but was convinced Chief Pul to use the child as a tool for the police state. Using a sun energy transformer, they diverted the yellow-sun energy from the rest of Kal-El's body into his auditory and visual senses allowing him to see anything on the world. He was raised as a child of the state as a police surveillance tool called Seer where he was able to see or hear anything on the planet with his enhanced sensed allowing Wingmen to be deployed to arrest anyone that opposed the police. The Seer was raised unaware of his past and that he was crippled which prevented him from leaving his special chamber as his leg muscles were not strong enough to support him though in reality it was the device hidden on him. As his enhanced vision was blocked by lead, any stockpiling of lead was banned and grounds for arrest by the Wingmen. Officer Katar Hol learnt from his father of Kal-El and worked to free him from the Wingmen.

In other media

Television

  • In Justice League, Thanagar was mentioned a number of times during the DC Animated Series. In "Starcrossed", it was revealed that the planet was going to be attacked by a Gordanian armada. This led to Thanagar's War Council to send Commander Hro Talak on a mission to use a hyperspace bypass on Earth to ambush the Gordanian homeworld though the act would have destroyed the human planet.
  • In The Batman, Thanagar was mentioned in the animated series episode "What Goes Up...". Hawkman commented that the Batcave was similar to the police headquarters on Thanagar though Batmans headquarters was more earth-bound.
  • In Legends of Tomorrow, Thangar was mentioned in the shared continuity of the Arrowverse where it was first mentioned in the episode "Destiny". The Time Masters revealed that extraterrestrials from the planet Thanagar invaded Earth in 2171 and grew to such a threat to conquer the Vanishing Point. It was this reason that the Time Masters decided to side with Vandal Savage and ensuring his rise to power to unite the world against this threat.
  • In Supergirl, Thanagar was mentioned in the live-action television series episode "The Darkest Place" where it was said that Nth Metal came from that world.
