History

Invading the surface in Aquaman v7 #3.

The Trench's origins were traced to the times of ancient Atlantis when it existed on the surface and was the dominant force on the planet Earth thousands of years ago. At the time, the land was led by King Atlan who ruled his people benevolently until he was usurped by his brother Orin. Orin took control of Atlantis and killed Atlan's family forcing him into exile after he narrowly escaped the attempt on his life. After fleeing, he vowed vengeance and sought weapons to aid him in this task leading him to journeying to a desert lands in order to acquire the material need to craft magical relics. With these at hand, he attacked Atlantis and such was his power that he broke the great city leading it to sink into the waters below. Atlantis was fractured into seven separate pieces whilst 90% of its inhabitants died in the cataclysm. The remaining 10% was split among the seven fragments with four of these being lost to time. Afterwards, the survivors mutated to survive the underwater depths where they became known as the Atlanteans. These Atlanteans occupied the first of the three known fragments of their once great civilization whilst another became known as Xebel that resided in a magical pocket dimension. The final part had its occupants mutated into ravenous deep sea near feral cannibals known as the Trench that remained sealed deep underground. (Aquaman v7 #24) The other Atlantean nations were shown to be the crab-like Kingdom of the Brine, the otter-like Wright kingdom and the luminescent Kingdom of Sea Lights. (Aquaman v8 #61)

A group of Trench managed to find themselves closer to the surface where they went up by the waters near Amnesty Bay. This saw them killing some sailors where they gorged themselves on the humans as a fresh new 'food'. (Aquaman v7 #1) After battling Aquaman and Mera, the Trench escaped but not before taking many victims with them back to their home. Arthur Curry managed to find a Trench that was killed and brought it before Stephen Shin for study where he surmised that they emerged from the Mid-Atlantic Range out of the Trench there due to the sulphide minerals that coated the specimens gills. (Aquaman v7 #3) Journeying into the Trench territory, they managed to free the captive humans but to escape Aquaman had to trigger a volcanic vent that killed the Trench in the area which included their Queen. (Aquaman v7 #4)

After defeating King Orm in battle, Aquaman claimed the throne and united the Atlanteans under his leadership where they worked with the surface dwellers to fight back the Trench. Vulko then provided the Dead King's Sceptre to Artur Curry where he revealed his role in engineering current events in order for Aquaman to be crowned king. Arthur then used the power of the Sceptre to cause the Trench to retreat back to their home. (Justice League v2 #17)

Unknown to anyone, the daughter of the Trench Queen survived and was growing to maturity. During this time, an oil rig in the Atlantic Sea was conducting drilling operations when they managed to capture her. The juvenile Queen was taken aboard when LexCorp scientists learnt of the find and arrived on the platform to study her. This saw them experiment on her leading to the rest of the Trench looking to recover her and bringing about their attack on the rig. A number of people were killed on the platform with Aquaman and Mera arriving to investigate the incident. This saw them encountering the Trench and Arthur finding the captive Queen who he freed. In response, she decided to end the attack on the rig and returned to the watery depths with the rest of the Trench who left the surviving humans unharmed. (Aquaman v8 #56)

A gathering was called from all the kingdoms to come to Atlantis to celebrate the wedding of Mera to a chosen successor to be king of the kingdom. Among the attendees was the Trench Queen who travelled to Atlantis with her delegation. They were joined by some of the other kingdoms that included the Brine, Wrights, Xebel, Sea Lights and the new nation of Dagon. King Orm believed Mera was still comatose and attempted to use the gathering to gain power over the other kingdoms but the Queen of Atlantis revealed herself. She then made a speech about he dangers of power in the hands of the few and proposed the end of monarchies among the sea kingdoms. This caused outrage amongst the delegates and Orm himself decided to launch a sneak attack from his hidden forces in order to bring an end to the age of Atlantis. (Aquaman v8 #61)

Seeking their stolen relic, the Trench conducted a sneak attack against the kingdom of Xebel where they overwhelmed the defenders. During this time, they were aided by Jackson Hyde who received assistance from the Mecha Manta which worked alongside the Xebellians in repelling the Trench. The Trench leader vowed that the Xebellians would regret their decision and then led his forces away from the scene. (Aquaman v8 #63)

Overview

Being aquatic beings, they possessed gills that allowed them to operate in dee waters. It was remarked that the creatures were not a missing link but rather a completely new chain of evolution. Due to being from deep underwater, their bodies were able to emit a bioluminescence similar to benthic anglerfish on the ocean floor. The energy it could generate the bioluminescence was astounding as the creatures needed to consume 20 to 30 times their own weight a day in order to function. (Aquaman v7 #3) Thus, they were driven by a desire for food and hunted other life forms that they consumed brutally. (Aquaman v7 #1) They generated a fluid from their mouths that caused mild paralysis in prey. From underneath the tongue, a Trench was able to excrete a paste that could be used to create a shell whose structured mimicked the properties of deep sea diving suits. (Aquaman v7 #3) Young Queens were the size of a human infant as they slowly grew to maturity. (Aquaman v8 #56)

Individual Trench were shown to spray their prey with saliva as a mark to indicate that they had claimed a prey as food. (Aquaman v7 #2) The Trench were shown to be cannibals and they consumed the bodies of their dead. (Aquaman v7 #2) They were known to encase prey within cocoons that they extruded which they used to store food for later consumption. Those claimed in such a manner were taken back to their home and preserved to feed the rest of their kind. (Aquaman v7 #3)

It was said that they were primitively brutal and ruthless with mercy not being a trait known to them. (Aquaman v8 #56) Due to their actions, some mistook the Trench for being primitive and unintelligent. Their young spawn resembled miniature versions of the adult Trench. The species was known to suffer from in-breeding and mutations among their kind that was killing some of them off. (Aquaman v7 #4)

The Trench were known to converse in their own language. (Aquaman v7 #1) In fact, they had a written language consisting of symbols that were part of an ancient dialect from Atlantis from before it sank. (Aquaman v7 #4)

The species were known to possess a monarchy with a ruling Queen that commanded their race with them being much larger than average Trench. (Aquaman v7 #4) As such, they tended to take orders from their Queens. (Aquaman v8 #56) Certain Trench were shown to be intelligent and capable of speaking in other languages with them wearing more ornate clothing. (Aquaman v8 #63)

Though seemingly primitive, they were able to craft underwater craft that were able to navigate the depths of the ocean. (Aquaman v7 #4)

Trenchers in Justice League: Throne of Atlantis.
  • In Justice League: Throne of Atlantis, the Trenchers were savage fish appearing monsters with four eyes who used barbaric blades to kill their foes. It was sad that they were group that scavenged beneath Atlantis before it sank beneath the ocean. Black Manta promised the Trenchers meat in exchange for their aid in assassinating Orm's half-brother Arthur Curry. They would ambush Arthur Curry after his heritage was revealed to him by Mera where they were nearly overwhelmed until the arrival of the Justice League forcing the monstrous beings to retreat. When Orm took the throne of Atlantis, he defeated Arthur Curry, Mera, Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern and Cyborg using the power of his trident. He gave the cocooned heroes to the Trenchers who intended to sacrifice them to a giant animalistic monster in a trench though Arthur Curry would escape where he freed his allies. When Arthur Curry became the king of Atlantis, he operated as the superhero as Aquaman where he and Mera moved to defeat the Trenchers that had assembled a horde to attak the outskirts of the Atlantean kingdom.
  • In Aquaman, the Trench featured in the setting of the 2018 live-action film set in the DC Extended Universe. They were shown as being monstrous aquatic humanoids who were one of the seven kingdoms of Atlantis after its sinking beneath the ocean. The Trench were shown as being savage who devoured any intruder that came upon their territory with them being sensitive to light as they were accustomed to living in the darkness of the ocean depths. Atlantis was known to sacrifice traitors to the Trench with it expected that they would be consumed by the flesh-eating beasts. They were also guardians of the pathway portal that led to the Hidden Sea that transported people to the Earth's core.
