Biography

William MacIntyre

At one point, the family came to reside at the Cliffside Trailer Park that was one in an endless string of homes for him. (Triumph v1 #1)

It was then that his father and Doctor Kobalt were both arrested by Hourman where the two were taken into custody. (Triumph v1 #1)

Overview

Personality and attributes

As a child, he constantly moved every few weeks which meant that he could not make friends and stopped trying to do so. (Triumph v1 #1)

It was said that his great limitation was his own misguided sense of self-importance. (Justice League Task Force v1 #33)

He was often let down by his father and never expected him to show up with him becoming used to it. In reality, his father was a low-ranking henchman for supervillains where among those he worked for was Doctor Kobalt who claimed to be the Lord of the Atom. After being arrested, his father told his son to not end up like him before he was taken away. (Triumph v1 #1)

Powers and abilities

Since he was 8 years old, he had trained to be a superhero and by the time he was 17 he had a bodybuilders physique. During that time, he also studied the sciences, martial arts and criminology whilst skipping social activities.(Triumph v1 #3)

It was in his late teenage years that he first came to manifest superpowers where he came to realise that they were slowly asserting themselves for years. (Triumph v1 #3) He used a fraction of the Earth's magnetism to fuel his super-abilities. (Justice League America v1 #92) Triumph was able to create fields of magnetism that allowed him to make himself bulletproof along with the power of flight. (Triumph v1 #1)

MacIntyre was able to use his powers to maintain a constant gravity pocket over an area. He used this ability on his broken vertebrae in order to reduce the pressure on it. (Justice League Task Force v1 #33)

He was said to be capable of siphoning solar energy from a Kryptonian's cells and potentially killing them in the process. (JLA v1 #31)

Triumph's uniform was equipped with energy dampening technology that could weaken any attack made on him. (Triumph v1 #1)

Notes

  • Triumph was created by Mark Waid, Brian Augustyn and Howard Porter where he made his first appearance in Justice League America v1 #92 (September, 1994).
  • On his website, Christopher Priest commented on the characters reception by the fandom, "This was, perhaps the most poorly thought-out launch of a new hero ever. I think most everyone associated with Triumph (who was created by DC Comics Group Editor Brian Augustyn, Mark Waid and Howard Porter) was taken a bit by surprise by the near-instant backlash the character received from the fans... Fans took an instant dislike to the character, and vented a great deal of that dislike at me. Despite numerous attempts on my part to explain that Triumph's origins was a creative decision made by the company long before I had anything to do with him, Triumph was savaged in the fan boards and I was burned in effigy. Playing to that energy, I talked to editor Augustyn and suggested we play to that resentment and suspicion by having the characters— the JLA and others— regard Triumph with resentment and suspicion."
