History

Pre-Crisis

The United Planets was an interstellar government that existed within the universe.

Brainiac 5 was given a special project by the United Planets where he was tasked with creating a highly advanced artificial intelligence system. This became known as Computo but the machine went rogue and out of control where it along with its computeroids attempted to take over Earth. (Adventure Comics v1 #341)

With the President dead, the Vice-President took over and became the new head of the United Planets where as part of the conspiracy he released a bill that outlawed the Legion of Super-Heroes. This saw the young heroes being arrested by the Science Police on their return and sentenced to Takron-Galtos. (Adventure Comics v1 #359)

Post-Zero Hour

Following the Zero Hour, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events.

In the aftermath, the McCauley Administration went about rebuilding work in the post-Blight Crisis with this occurring over many worlds. (Legion Worlds v1 #1)

Among the threats impacted the U.P. was the artificial life known as Robotica with advance deep-core U.P Navy units battling the danger. (Legion Worlds v1 #1)

Post-Flashpoint

Following the Flashpoint, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events. It was said that the United Planet's foundation came in the 21st century when the truth about Krypton's destruction was revealed to the cosmos and the clandestine actions of the Circle were exposed. To prevent a future such tragedy, these worlds decided to cooperate with Jonathan Samuel Kent suggesting that they base it on the United Nations that existed on his homeworld of Earth. Thus, the United Planets was formed with many worlds and species deciding to work together for the common good. (Superman v5 #15) Afterwards, the leaders of the United Planets found a barren habitable world that they decided would be their headquarters and planned to terraform it. However, they came under attack from Mongul who intended to eliminate the leaders present and thus bring about the demise of the nascent United Planets before it could full establish itself. Before he could kill them though, he was interrupted by Superman who was assisted by the bodyguard details of the galactic leaders present at the scene. (Superman v5 #19)

Afterwards, a summit was held on Oa in order to decide on the world's entry into the United Planets. During this debate, assassins targeted the Guardians of the Universe for elimination for their caging of magic long ago. (Green Lantern v6 #1) Ultimately, a vote was held and Oa came to be a member world of the United Planets were the Green Lantern Corps was formally made part of the interstellar alliance. A re-organization was held of the Corps that saw 1200 Sectors being removed from their purview and jurisdiction being given over to the United Planets Brigade. (Green Lantern v6 #2)

Later on, the United Planets held a trial against a rogue member of the Synmar known as the Synmar Utopica. Despite the presence of the United Order, they were unable to keep the superpowered Synmar trapped and he escaped from their custody where he made his way to Earth in order to target Superman. (Justice League v4 #64)

Soon afterwards, the Durlan Thaaros was selected as the new leader of the United Planets, taking the title of Lord Premiere. He would soon be informed that Superman and his new team were travelling to Warworld Prime, seeking to dethrone Mongul MDCCXCII and free the slaves of Warworld, including Superman's kin, the Kryptonian diaspora Phaelosians. Mysteriously, despite the protests of his fellow councilors, Thaaros counseled that the United Planets should not intervene, opining that to do so could risk the wrath of Mongul should Superman fail. When Superman was apparently killed in the fighting, Thaaros convinced the council that the correct course of action was to remain silent. (Action Comics v1 #1036)

Following the apparent vanishing of the Guardians of the Universe, the United Planets took up administration of the Green Lantern Corps. Immediately thereafter, they declared Earth to be under quarantine as a result of the ostensible threat it posed to the survival of the universe. In response, Hal Jordan resigned his post and returned to Earth. (Green Lantern v7 #1)

Overview

It was said to hold a population of up to 300 billion citizens. (Adventure Comics v1 #366)

The United Planets celebrated its foundation with this event being known as Unity Day. (Superman v5 #15) A celebration established by the U.P. was Flash Day that was made in honor of the superhero known as the Flash. This saw the establishment of the Barry Allen Memorial Institute that took part in the celebrations and ceremonies. (Adventure Comics v1 #373)

A leading body within the government was the United Earth Council whose speaker was the President. (Legion of Super-Heroes v2 #273)

Legal matters were pursued by the Prosecutor General who presented government cases. Agents empowered by the government were known as United Planets Deputies. (Legion of Super-Heroes v2 #273)

Attached to the President's office was a team of superpowered operatives that made up the Presidential Oversight Watch. They were founded after the dissolution of the Legion of Super-Heroes to provide a group of post-human defenders who utilised them for key operations. (Legion Worlds v1 #1)

Upon its formation, they came to create a team of superpowered operatives called the United Order. (Justice League v4 #64)

The U.P. made use of a telepathic means of interstellar communication in the wake of the Great Rift Crisis' with this being the Titanian Interstellar Telecommunication Access Network (TITANet). From Titan, the TITANnet-Hub utilised telepathic adepts of Grade 4 or higher working in shifts and using a telepathic booster at Titanopolis to transmit messages across great distances of space. Thus, it served as a communication exchange where messages could be received, sent and relayed with technology either being modified with psi-boosters or people making use of private adepts for telecommunion. (Legion Worlds v1 #3)

A development from McCauley Industries for the U.P. was the Footstep Drive that was a revolutionary new drive system that allowed for short dimensional hops between travel points. The technology was initially offered to the Science Police and the U.P. Forces Corps with plans for public use in the future. (Legion Worlds v1 #1)

Among the worlds within the United Planets included:

  • Labyrinth : a top security prison world that was a marvel of modern technology. (Legion of Super-Heroes v3 #45)
  • Shanghalla :
  • Takron-Galtos : a notable prison planetoid that was used to hold criminals and super-powered beings. (Adventure Comics v1 #359)
