History

The Yeti's were actually robotic constructs that served the entity known as the Great Intelligence. This non-corporeal entity took over the body of Padmasambhava, the lama of Det-Sen Monastery, and built the Yeti over hundreds of years. The Yeti were initially a ruse to scare off curiosity seekers from the mountain cave where the Intelligence planned to manifest; later, they became more of an army serving the Great Intelligence. These robots were similar in appearance to what explorer Professor Edward Travers called 'real' Yeti. (Episode: The Abominable Snowmen)

The Yeti began guarding a cave near a Buddhist monastery in the Himalayas, scaring or killing travellers. The Yeti robots are protecting a pyramid of spheres that housed the Great Intelligence, who has also possessed the body of the High Lama Padmasamabhava ever since encountering the man on the astral plane some centuries ago. Using Padmasambhava the Great Intelligence moves small Yeti pieces around a chess-like map of the monastery and mountainside. The Great Intelligence intended to create a physical body for itself in order to spread its influence into the wider world. In 1935, the Second Doctor who had been a friend of Padmasambhava's arrived in the Himalayas with his companions Victoria and Jamie. Along with Professor Travers, they put an end to the Great Intelligence's plan when Jamie smashed the pyramid control in the cave. However, Travers spotted a living Yeti as he parted ways with the Doctor and company. (Episode: The Abominable Snowmen)

Lethbridge-Stewart came to encounter a Yeti on Gallifrey, left over from Rassilon's games. On this occasion, the Second Doctor maddened it with a Galactic Glitter, and the resulting rock fall prevented any further interaction with it. (Episode: The Five Doctors)

Overview

In appearance, the Yeti were bipdal robots that were large and hairy to disguise themselves in the Himalayas. Their claws, feet, and eyes were the only parts not covered in fur; their claws and feet were black and bumpy, their teeth yellow, and their eyes green. (Episode: The Abominable Snowmen)

Control spheres were depicted as capable of seeking out inactive Yeti and crawling into the robots to activate them, emitting a series of whistle-like beeps whilst doing so. If the cavity intended to house the sphere was blocked, the sphere ignored that Yeti and fell silent. (Episode: The Abominable Snowmen)
