Biography

The Wraith in Amazing Spider-Man v1 #663.

Yuriko Watanabe was a female human born in the modern age where she was the daughter of John Watanabe. (Amazing Spider-Man v3 #19.1)

As a child, she attended her grandfather Kenneth Watanabes award ceremony for his service as a Sergeant in the NYPD with her stating that she was proud of him. (Amazing Spider-Man v3 #19.1)

When she was an adult, her father was convicted for a bribery leading to his disgrace. (Amazing Spider-Man v3 #19.1)

As a Lieutenant, she and DeWolff often worked on cases together under Captain George Stacy with one of these being work done against the Lucky Lobo gang. She and Jean were called to assist Captain Stacy as he went to meet an informant at Pappas Imports. The incident led to gunfire with the informant seemingly turning on George who was shot in the leg with the shooter being killed in the process. Both Yuri and Jean came to help George where they took him to the hospital. (Gwen Stacy v1 #1)

Following the incident with Massacre, Watanabe believed she needed to do something to stem the tide of violence that had come to the city. Thus, she decided to become a masked vigilante where she took the name of the Wraith where she made criminals believe that this was the Ghost of Jean DeWolff having risen from the grave to take revenge. After becoming a vigilante, she came to adopt the identity of the Wraith. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #664)

She came to admire the work of vigilantes in gaining justice for people murdered such as Spider-Man had done for Jean DeWolff. Upon becoming a vigilante herself, she sought to use fear as a means of scaring criminals and preventing further crime. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #664) She was a passionate cop and came to be a reluctant vigilante. (Amazing Spider-Man v3 #19.1)

Her grandfather was Kenneth Watanabe who had been a sergeant in the police force and was awarded the NYPD Medal of Honor. (Amazing Spider-Man v3 #19.1)

Yuri was noted to had been close friends with Jean DeWolff. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #664)

Powers and abilities

The technology used by the Wraith suit originally belonged to Mysterio. The mask was able to remotely transmit its visuals to anything within range. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #664)

  • Yuri Watanabe was created by Dan Slott and John Romita Jr. where she made her first appearance in Amazing Spider-Man v1 #600 (September, 2009).
  • The character was later revealed as being the new Wraith in Amazing Spider-Man v1 #663 (August, 2011).
