Biography

Goku Black and Zamasu in Dragon Ball Super v1 #4.

Zamasu (Japanese: ザマス, Hepburn: Zamasu) was a male member of the Shinjin race who was native to Universe 10 where he served as the North Kai and was an apprentice to his reality's Supreme Kai Gowasu. During this time, he came to witness countless wars waged by mortals who he came to see responsible for destroying the beauty of creation. Gowasu later came to choose Zamasu to be his successor based on his fighting talent where he promised to do his best in bringing about universal peace. One day, he was tending to his master who informed him the duties of a Supreme Kai which was watching over their universe along with the mortals residing in it. However, Zamasu questioned whether mortals were worthy of such protection due to their past mistakes. Gowasu though said that the duties of a Kai was to create and not to interfere with creation. Reluctantly, Zamasu kept silent and seemingly accepted his masters words of wisdom despite disagreeing with them. Around this this time, The God of Destruction Beerus along with his attendant Whis and the Saiyan Goku arrived in order to see if the Time Rings remained undisturbed as they were looking for clues about the mysterious Goku Black. During this brief encounter, Goku made repeated challenges to fight Zamasu as he perceived him to be a strong fighter with Gowasu allowing it claiming to the younger Kai that it was part of his training. For their fight, Goku turned into a Super Saiyan thus surprising the two Kai's with the two engaged in combat. In the fight, Goku, Beerus and Whis could feel Zamasu's ki where they thought it felt similar to the one generated by Goku Black. Ultimately, Goku defeated Zamasu but offered his hand to help him up but the Kai reacted with hostility leading to him being reprimanded by Gowasu. Beerus and his compatriots then departed after Whis was convinced that Zamasu and Goku Black were two separate individuals. However, he did note that the two shared the same coldness in their hearts. The encounter also impacted Zamasu as it furthered his hatred of mortals.

Afterwards, Gowasu had Zamasu accompany him to the planet Babari whilst sitting for tea. He came to advocate the destruction of the primitive mortal inhabitants but was rebuked by Gowasu. Instead, the elder Kai asserted that only the God of Destruction to commit such acts rather than them. It was then that Gowasu showed the Time Ring and explained its functioning to his attendant. They then departed for the future where they passed 1000 years on the planet Babari where conflict still continued among the inhabitants. Zamasu though concluded that the continued existence of such beings would bring about no peace as they used only brute force and a disregard for laws or justice. In this time, one of the natives attacked him where Zamasu at first sent them flying but later used lethal force to kill one of them. This brought the disapproval of his mentor who returned them to the present where he explained justice was meant to counteract evil. The pair continued to disagree on their approach regarding mortals where later they came to watch GodTube to see the fight between Universe 6 and 7 in a tournament. The prize came to be the Super Dragon Balls which Gowasu revealed were relics capable of granting any wish that surprised the younger Zamasu. He also witnessed Goku fighting in the match and able to tap into godly ki which angered Zamasu as he wondered how mortals could attain such power.

While Vegeta and Goku argue, Gowasu and Shin show up with a Time Ring and confront Black and Zamasu about their actions, but their attempts are in vain. Black affirms that his path was already chosen and says nothing that Gowasu said could change it, and attempted to kill him, but is stopped by Goku and Vegeta. The Kais refuse to leave when asked, wanting to see the battle through. Vegeta requests to take Black, believing that he couldn't be beaten by a fake Goku. Vegeta overwhelms Black, who notices Vegeta's drastically increased strength, which allows him to send him flying. Vegeta then proceeds to give Black a well-deserved thrashing while informing that he could never achieve the full power of a Saiyan by stealing Goku's body. Black questions the difference in power, which Vegeta answers by declaring Black as being nothing but a fake and a thief; Vegeta affirms that he was the Prince of all Saiyans and that he would destroy him. Black continues to be overwhelmed by Vegeta on the battlefield, noting that Vegeta must have grown stronger due to his anger. Possessing the body of a Saiyan himself, Black decides that he will do the same, and stabs his energy blade into his hand, revealing a new, large scythe variation of it. Black slashes at Vegeta, who dodges it, but the slash creates a large rift in time itself. As Future Zamasu pursues Future Trunks and the others, Vegeta and Goku are held back by the illusionary clones created by the large rift, and Black mocks them as they are surrounded by the clones.

Soon, Black realizes Future Zamasu' flustering energy and uses Instant Transmission to teleport towards Zamasu, with Goku and Vegeta in pursuit. When the two reunite, Future Zamasu admits that their opponents were far stronger than expected and couldn not be underestimated anymore, and informed Black about their "secret weapon". Black and Zamasu then use their Potara earrings and fuse into one, single, powerful warrior known as Fused Zamasu. Fused Zamasu was later erased from existence when Future Zeno erased him after Goku summoned him, putting an end to both Future Zamasu and Black's plans once and for all. Fused Zamasu defuses after his hour is up, however, the immortality of Future Zamasu will not allow them to separate and he and Black are stuck in a deformed half fused state. Future Trunks proceeds to cut them in half, however, this allows the two to reform individually due to both retaining the immortality. Goku Black is stabbed through the back by Future Trunks, but takes him down and transforms himself into Fused Zamasu. Future Zamasu also transforms into his Fusion form as well. As the two Fused Zamases are preparing to kill Goku, Super Saiyan Blue Vegeta rescues him and then fires his ultimate attack: the Gamma Burst Flash - blowing the two Fused Zamasu's into pieces, which then reform into many Zamases. The Zamases were later erased from existence when Future Zeno erased him after Goku summoned him, putting an end to both Future Zamasu and Black's plans once and for all.

Overview

Personality and attributes

In appearance, Zamasu was of the race of Kai's where he had a lean-build of fairly tall height where he had pale green skin, gray irises, white eyebrows along with white hair styled as a mohawk. A future version of himself came to swap bodies with Goku and came to be known as Goku Black (ゴクウブラック Gokū Burakku). The two later came to merge into one powerful being where they were known as Fused Zamasu (合がっ体たいザマス Gattai Zamasu).

As a fighter, Zamasu was shown to be a very calm and methodical person who carefully perceived his opponent's attack style and seamlessly countering in a fluid manner.

Zamasu was shown to had been intrigued over hearing how a mortal such as Goku was able to defeat the likes of Majin Buu thus having powers greater than a god. He felt threatened by the likes of the Saiyans on Earth who were stronger than most deities. Zamasu felt that this threatened the gods very nature if they created something they could not control. As such, the Saiyans were seen as the ultimate symbol of the failure of the Kais. It was for this reason that he took over Goku's body allowing him to assume the sins of mortal kind and the failure of divinity which was deemed the duty of a true god.

Though a Kai, he was shown to question the worth of mortals and their role in ensuring the prosperity of the universe. He believed them to be lowly beings that only handled problems through repeated cycles of conflict. Thus, he could not comprehend how they were relevant in the balance of the cosmos. He found all mortals to be alike in that they were led astray by their ignorance.

Ultimately, he believed that there was no such thing s corruption. Instead, he thought that evil did not inform it but sullied it. He believed that mortals were flawed as they simply misused the gifts that they were given and instead used it to destroy the beauty of creation. As such, he did not thing mortals succumbed to evil but were evil themselves where their every action simply created and spread evil.

In fact, he was not above killing mortals that attacked him despite his power allowing him to evade their attacks. He believed that one could not be called a god if they allowed the evil created by mortals to spread.

Zamasu came to conceive of Project Zero Mortals (人間ゼロ計画 Ningen Zero Keikaku; "Zero Humans Plan") that was a plan to terminate all mortals.

Powers and abilities

As a Shinjin, he had the ability to manipulate his ki to achieve a variety of feats such as manipulating energy, telekinesis or giving himself the power of flight. As the Supreme Kai's attendant, he possessed the ability to rejuvenate anyone and restore them to full health instantly, even if they were on the brink of death. Though a lower Ka, he was recognised for being a genius among his kind and stood out due to his remarkable ki, raw power and his fighting talent. Shin had described Zamasu's skills and abilities as almost certainly peerless in comparison to those of all the Supreme Kais from the remaining twelve universes. Zamasu himself saw the Supreme Kais of Universe 7 as being of a higher pedigree from having defeated Majin Buu. Goku thought that Zamasu had the potential to be as strong as Beerus though such a notion was scoffed at by the God of Destruction. It was these traits that led to him being selected for training to become a Supreme Kai.

It was shown that he was able to utilize telekinesis to hold down his foes. He was able to manipulate his ki into create Energy Blades (エネルギー手刀 Enerugī Shutō, lit. "Energy Hand Blade").

Among the techniques known to him included:

  • Kiai (気き合あい lit. "fighting spirit") : he could unleash his ki to affect the air currents around him thus creating an invisible blast around him to attack foes via this shockwave.
  • Black Power Ball (ブラックパワーボール Burakku pawā bōru) :
    • Divine Retribution (神罰執行 Shinbatsu Shikkō, lit. "Carrying Out Divine Punishment") :
  • God Split Cut (神裂斬 Shin Retsuzan) : concentrated of ki into his hands allowed him to create a blade of energy.
  • God Splitter (神裂波 Shinretsuha, lit. "Rending God Wave") :
  • Black Kamehameha (ブラックかめはめ波は Burakku Kamehameha, lit. "Black Kamehame Wave") :
  • Heavenly Arrow (神裂振矢 Shinretsufuya, lit. "Fierce God Shaking Arrow") :
  • Holy Light Grenade (神裂光弾 Shin Retsu Kōdan, lit. God Rending Light Bullet) :
  • Holy Wrath (聖なる逆鱗 Seinaru Gekirin) :
  • Instant Transmission (瞬しゅん間かん移い動どう Shunkan Idō, lit. "Instantaneous Movement", also translated as "Teleportation") :
    • Sudden Death Beam (瞬殺波 Shunsatsuha, lit. "Instant Murder Wave") :

A version of him came to use the Super Dragon Balls to switch bodies with Goku and thus gained all the powers of his Saiyan body including its transformations. Black in his base form was said to be at least equal if not somewhat stronger than Super Saiyan 3 Goku. He had his own notable Saiyan transformation called Super Saiyan Rosé (超スーパーサイヤ人じんロゼ Sūpā Saiya-jin Roze) where he was surrounded by pink energy that greatly increased his strength.

Through the Super Dragon Balls, he was able to attain immortality allowing him to remain unchanged by the passage of time. This allowed him to heals any wound he may incur within seconds.

The two later came to use the merging technique using the Potara fusion to become a single being with the strengths of both bodies as Fused Zamasu (合がっ体たいザマス Gattai Zamasu). It was said that the fusion helped expand his combined power to no visible end where he possessed his natural immortality whilst he gained Goku Black's limitless potential great making them a near-perfect entity.

After the destruction of his body, the fallen Kai's immortality allowed him to live on alongside with the Saiyan's ability to grow in strength. This led to the creation of a mutated form called Infinite Zamasu (無限ザマス Mugen Zamasu) where his regeneration was so great that it could allow him to heal from any attack.

Notes
