John Banning was the son of Stephen Banning, a junior archaeologist who assisted his father and Joseph Whemple in excavating the tomb of Princess Ananka in Egypt in 1895. During the excavation, John broke his leg and against his uncle's insistence remained at the dig, thereby dooming himself to walk with a limp for the rest of his life because he did not get it properly set.
Three years later in Engerfield, England, John was targetted by the vengeful Mehemet Bey for desecrating Ananka's tomb. Twice John was attacked by Kharis the living mummy, sent by Bey to murder him. Both times he was saved by his wife Isobel Banning, whose resemblance to Princess Ananka allowed her to command Kharis to release her husband.
