The Darklings were a race of fungoid creatures from the planet Yuggoth that dominated a sector of space near the star Beta Centaurus 25,000 years ago. They were driven to 61 Cygni by the Tzun.

The Darklings ("fungoids from Yuggoth") are obviously meant as an allusion/homage to the Cthulhu Mythos' mi-go (a.k.a. the "Fungi from Yuggoth").
