History
From the research station, mankind discovered a cache of refined Element Zero that exposed them to the ability to generate mass effect fields that allowed for FTL travel.
Overview
When subjected to electrical current, the material emitted a dark energy field that raised or lowered the mass of all objects within its vicinity. This created a 'mass effect' field that could be used in a number of ways such as creating artificial gravity or manufacturing high-strength materials. By advanced races, it was normally used to enable faster-than-light space travel.
