History

Luna Nova Magical Academy (ルーナノヴァ魔法学校, Rūna Nova Mahō Gakkō) was a renowned and prestigious school that trained young girls in the magical arts of witchcraft. It was established by a group of powerful witches known as the Nine Olde Witches who founded the academy in the 5th century in the time after the Witch Hunts when their kind lost their place in the world until these nine restored the glory of magic. Since that time, it had served as an institution for magic for 1600 years with it thriving during the Golden Age of Magic (魔法黄金期 Mahō kogane-ki?).

Former student Croix Meridies now an adult returned to the Academy where she was given the rule as a teacher. She sought to introduce more technology related magic to the school but faced resistance from the more conservative professors. At the time, the Academy faced a shortage of magical energy and a strike from the spirits that tended to it. During an outbreak of hostilities, Meridies stepped in where she offered devices that supplied additional magical energy bringing a halt to the crisis. This saw this technology being added into the school with students and even staff accepting the technical gadgets being offered by Professor Meridies.

Overview

The Academy had a number of strict rules that included:

  • Abstaining from any activity that would ill befit the pride of a Luna Nova student.
  • Do not use magic outside the school.
  • Do not leave campus without permission.
  • Do not steal.
  • Do not perform dangerous experiments in the dorms.
  • Do not eat during classes or exams.
  • Do not bring or use high-tech devices at the academy.
  • Do not enter any of the locations of Luna Nova that are off limits.

In addition to the teachers, the Academy was maintained by a host of Spirits (精霊 Seirei?) who did menial and maintenance chores with them being powered by the magic from the Sorcerers Stone.

Locations on campus included:

  • Luna Nova Archives :
  • Luna Nova Library :
  • Fountain of Polaris :
  • New Moon Tower :
  • Blue Moon Abyss : situated beneath Luna Nova with entrance to it only being open on the nights of the blue moon. The sole inhabitant was the spirit of the Olde Witch Woodward who was said to be able to answer any question about a persons past, present or future with her only answering those that appeased her.

A central component of the academy was its Sorcerer's Stone (魔導石 Madō-seki?) that was a large green mystical gem situated at a high tower. It absorbed the magical energy from the ley lines and allowed for witches to freely use their magic in its proximity.

Ley Lines (レイライン Rei rain?) were used as a means of transportation by the witches with the academy situated by one. A Ley Line Terminal was established that could be accessed through witches brooms allowing them entry and exit from the campus. Once inside the building, they simply cast their spells to let their brooms fly and entered into the leyline. Upon entry, the travellers were able to go through the Ley Line Network and emerge to anywhere connected by it. Once inside, they witches could be transported across dimensions to reach the academy. Sodium interfered with the workings of a leyline and thus was banned from use during transport. Any sodium present caused instability that could knock the travellers of course to another part of the leyline network.

The Academy celebrated the Samhain Festival which marked the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter. It was celebrated at the school where students were in charge of a celebration of magic with the winner being crowned as the Moonlit Witch.
