Biography

Mikoto Misaka and one of the Sisters.

Mikoto Misaka (Japanese, 御坂 美琴, English: Misaka Mikoto) was a female human born in the modern age where she was the daughter of Misuzu Misaka and Tabigake Misaka. At elementary school age, she entered into Academy City where she distinguished herself as a child prodigy and showed a talent for being an Esper where she started as Level 1 and quickly climbed her way to Level 5. Around this time, she was approached by the Sisters Project where they believed her a perfect candidate for the experiment. The young Misaka was told that her participation would help people who suffered from fatal diseases such as muscular dystrophy with her willingly giving a DNA sample to the researchers of the project.

In her first year, she lost a 10,000 yen bill to one particular vending machine, which led to her often taking her frustration out on it. On July 14th, she encountered and had a brief conversation with Kaede Ibotanokikouji, who had been falsely claiming to be the Number Six, with Mikoto not taking much notice of the claim or being bothered by it. In one fateful event, she saved her future friend Kuroko Shirai from a robber by using her 'Railgun' ability. Kuroko eventually enrolled at Tokiwadai as well and gained great affection for Mikoto. Mikoto later became roommates with Kuroko in Room 208 - despite Kuroko being her junior - after Kuroko 'legally' removes Mikoto's previous roommate who was supposedly ill-natured towards Mikoto.

One day, she was being hit on by a group of delinquents. At this time, Touma Kamijou was present where he attempted to stop them. This act caused the bullies to target him instead where they chased him around the city. Much to Misaka's disappointment, his plan failed as Mikoto has somehow caught up to them and knocked the thugs out. Angered at Touma, she decided to test his mettle despite his protests on being a Level 0. This saw her using a variety of her electrical based attacks including her special ability Railgun. However, Touma was unharmed due to his own unique power named Imagine Breaker that nullified anything touched by his hand. Mikoto was surprised at how someone like that could survive a Level 5's attacks without any injury. This saw her continuing to unleash more and more of her power. However, a powerful electrical attack came to render 80% of the city without electricity. In the darkness and confusion, Touma managed to escape whilst Mikoto looked to evade anyone connecting the blackout to herself.

Sometime later, she decides to hack into Academy City's database to find out more about Touma. However, she was surprised by a heavily intoxicated Touma who gave her a box of sushi. Touma then begins to leave, along with the many other girls that appeared with him, and she ends up following him to his dorm. Mikoto and the other girls were persuaded to leave but not before Mikoto forcefully obtains a promise to explain everything. She later catches up with him on a bridge after the excitement dies down and returns his phone strap, telling him not to lose it since their match. He states that the reason he can't stand still is due to the impending chaos that is about to befall Academy City. She then tells him that she will not stop him because she knows he won't listen to her anyway, but just as he is about to leave, she grabs his hand and states that this time he is not alone.

Afterwards, Mikoto was in despair over the deaths of over 10,000 Misaka clones which she believed was her own fault. The clones were being used for a project to help Accelerator achieve Level 6. One night, when she quietly calls for help, Touma arrives with the Sisters project document that he found in her room, demanding to know what she is doing. Mikoto reveals that she has been taking out research facilities in an attempt to stop the experiment and save her sisters, but she failed at her task, because new facilities kept coming out. She is also unable to kill Accelerator and she states that she is going to be quickly killed by him in order to save the remaining Sisters. Touma stands in Mikoto's way to prevent her from killing herself, but refuses to fight her. Mikoto attacks him until he passes out. When she finally clears her mind, she tells Touma the location of the next fight scheduled for Accelerator, while she waits on the bridge for him to return. But after a few minutes, she runs after Touma, to the battle site, trying to save him even though she knows she could not win. When she arrives, Mikoto prepares to fire her Railgun, but she pauses when she realizes that Accelerator is preparing a plasma attack by controlling the direction of the wind and collecting it in one place. She figures out that she can counter it by controlling the wind. With the desire to protect Touma, she wakes up Misaka 10032, who Accelerator knocked out earlier, and she gets the remaining clones across the city to change the direction of the wind by controlling the wind turbines. This prevents Accelerator from finishing his attack, and when he approaches Mikoto and Misaka 10032 in order to kill them, Touma stops him and gives him his 'weakest attack'. After everything is over, Mikoto is seen at the hospital visiting Touma to thank him.

Mikoto was about to head out from her dorm and enjoy her last day of summer vacation when Unabara Mitsuki, a guy who's infatuated with her, asked if they could spend the day together. Mikoto however finds his presence unwelcoming, so she decided on a 'Fake Date' plan. This was where she pretended she knew the guy and treated him to lunch just to avoid him for the day, is her best option. It just so happened that Touma, along with Tsuchimikado Motoharu and Aogami Pierce, were walking by her dorm, so she decides to use Touma as her pretend boyfriend to ditch Mitsuki. However, the dorm head and the other students witnessed the act. She dragged a helpless Touma away from the scene. Touma reluctantly agrees to help, so she bought them two hot dogs, which, of course, they got mixed up, resulting in either of them eating their respective meal causing the Tokiwadai's Ace to be embarrassed. Later Touma decides to back out from the plan after realizing that Unabara is a great guy and he definitely cares for her. Realizing her own selfishness, Mikoto decided to talk to Mitsuki later, and treated Touma to some burgers as thanks for all the help he had been to her. While waiting in line, the real Mitsuki tells Mikoto to run away and the Mitsuki she'd seen was an impostor. She later saves Touma from being crushed by a steel beam while he was fighting the fake Mitsuki, while hiding behind a steel beam. She happens to hear the conversation between the two of them, including Touma's 'answer'. She shakes her head from side to side, trying to fight her blushing expression and pretending not to have heard what Touma said. She believes that Touma doesn't really treat her as someone special, and calls him an idiot for saying things that cause people to misunderstand or confuse his meanings. It was probably at this point that Mikoto's feelings for Touma began to grow. Later that day, she bumps into Touma again after Index was kidnapped by Yamisaka Ouma from a family restaurant they dined at. She then asks him why he ditched her after she went through the trouble of getting the food, then asks him if he is alright after the attack at the restaurant; but Touma, in a hurry to save Index, ditches her again much to her chagrin.

Overview

Personality and attributes

In appearance, Mikoto Misaka was a female human with chestnut hair and was often seen wearing a small hair clip. Due to her abilities, she came to be known by a nickname of Railgun (超電磁砲 (レールガン) Rērugan, lit. "Super Electromagnetic Cannon"). Due to her skill and consistently high grades she came to be referred to as Tokiwadai's Ace (トキワダイエース, Tokiwadaiēsu). Kamijou Touma came to give her the nickname Biri-Biri (ビリビリ?) on account of her electrical abilities. Sometimes, she was known to hide her identity by pulling up her hair into a cap with this leading to some mistaking her for a boy.

To most people, she is considered a 'proper lady' or ojou-sama (お嬢様?).

She was shown to be a short-tempered and prideful person with some slight tomboyish tendencies that was used to hide her insecurities. She often shows an incredibly immature and selfish side and displays heavy tsundere tendencies when her crush, Touma, insults her. She can also be slightly hypocritical at times, getting angry at Touma for not calling her by her name despite never once calling him by his.

Despite that, she was generally friendly and an easy-going person. While generally amicable and humble, Misaka was highly individualistic.

Unlike other Level 5's, she did not look down on lower-level Espers at all.

It was shown that Mikoto was very intelligent, naturally as she is in Tokiwadai Middle School, a school that is meant to create world-leading talents and thus deals with a very advanced curriculum. Furthermore, she has been shown to be capable of solving problems intended for Kamijou Touma who courses a school grade higher than her, though it should be noted that Kamijou's school doesn't pursue the same academic excellence that Tokiwadai does.

Misaka had a keen sense of justice which was often demonstrated by her frequent involvement in crime-fighting. She often prefers to be solitary and dislikes the idea of being restricted by rules and duties such as those of Judgement and Anti-Skill. She wishes to avoid endangering other people and relies on her powers to try to solve problems on her own, often times despite her better judgment. Mikoto naturally acts as a leader and becomes the center of attention by everyone, yet she cannot mingle with those people regardless of being the center. She states that Mikoto is at the top and can defeat her enemies, but she cannot avoid making more enemies at the same time. Moreover, she states that the most important to Onee-sama is someone she can feel is on the same level as her.

Mikoto had a fondness for cute things even if they seemed to be childish such as Gekota and Kill Bear merchandise. Her soft spot towards cute things led to her being easily embarrassed when she was seen with them. She liked frog merchandise, but only if it features Gekota. When she realizes that a stuffed animal another person is carrying is just a regular frog, she immediately loses all of her interest in the stuffed animal. She also often goes to Green Mart to read manga for free in her spare time on Mondays and Wednesdays and goes to the bookstore on the 10th of each month

She had a very irrational and unexplained fear of bugs.

It was shown that Mikoto had intended to take the trial enrollment into Touma's school during the Ichihanaran Festival, which further showed her interest in Touma, though this came to naught as she was interrupted by Shokuhou Misaki.

Powers and abilities

As an Esper, she had the ability to generate and control electricity along with being able to see beyond the visible electromagnetic spectrum which classed her as a Level 1 Electromaster (電撃使い (エレクトロマスター) Erekutoromasutā, lit. "Electricity User"). This gave her the ability to use electricity in various ways such as shooting it and electromagnetism. Mikoto was capable of generating and manipulating electricity, as well as phenomena connected to electricity, including electromagnetism, Lorentz force, and more. Originally, she was a Level 1 Esper who became a Level 5 Esper through hard work. She was ranked third of the seven level five most powerful Espers in Academy City. Her maximum output was known to be 1 billion volts. Being the strongest Electromaster and a Level 5 esper, she has a high degree of power, and she also has a high degree of precise control over that power. As such, she can utilize applications of her ability that weaker Electromasters would not be capable of, with a high degree of versatility. Mikoto uses her ability in many ways. Besides simply discharging electricity, she can use magnetism to move objects made of or containing metal in her surroundings (including large amounts of iron sand), easily hack electronic devices and networks, sense and emit electromagnetic waves (utilizing them for a personal radar), and even call down lightning and thunderclouds, as well as firing metal objects at supersonic speeds using Lorentz force (the Railgun that is the source of her epithet and ability name), among other things.

She was able to launch these attacks in a directed form with it being described as a lightning spear (雷撃の槍 Raigeki no Yari?, lit. "Lightning attack spear").

Her signature ability was Railgun (超電磁砲レールガン Chō-Denjihō (Rērugan)?, lit. "Super Electromagnetic Cannon") whereby she operated as a living super electromagnetic gun. This was an application of Fleming's Momentum theory allowing her to launch projectiles with a extra strength.
