Cottonmouth (Cornell Stokes)

Main Article: Cornell Stokes

Cornell Stokes was an African-American man who came to be one of New York City's leading crime bosses. His criminal enterprise controlled most of the heroin trade in the city. (Power Man v1 #18) When Willis Stryker wanted to frame Carl Lucas for drug trafficking, he stole heroin from Cottonmouth's organization. (Hero for Hire v1 #1) One of Cage's informants, Flea, eventually discovered this information, but was killed by Cottonmouth's men. (Power Man v1 #18) Cottonmouth then tried to recruit Cage into his organization over the objections of Mr. Slick. Cage accepted as a ploy to bring Cottonmouth to justice. To prove himself, he was sent to retrieve a shipment of heroin that had been stolen by Boss Morgan's men. (Power Man v1 #19) After having infiltrated the organization, Cage gathered enough evidence to bring them down and inform the authorities. (Power Man v1 #20)

Cottonmouth (Burchell Clemens)

Main Article: Burchell Clemens

Burchell Clemens

Cottonmouth was one of several snake-themed criminals selected by Sidewinder to join the Serpent Society. (Captain America v1 #310) Alongside Asp, Cottonmouth advertised the Serpent Society to the Kingpin. (Captain America v1 #311) The Society's first mission was to kill M.O.D.O.K. for A.I.M. This led to a battle between the Serpent Society and Captain America. While Captain America managed to defeat several of the Serpents, Cottonmouth and Death Adder delivered killing blows to M.O.D.O.K. (Captain America v1 #313) Cottonmouth later joined Diamondback, Rattler, and Death Adder in battling Captain America when the Porcupine had alerted Captain America to their presence. Diamondback chased after Porcupine, but the three male serpents were eventually defeated and taken into custody. (Captain America v1 #315)
