Biography

Origin

Simon Stagg was a male human who was born in the modern age on Earth. (The Brave and the Bold v1 #57)

It was known that he had a younger brother named Beowulf Stagg with their father giving him a golden watch as a gift. (Action Comics v1 #417)

He then hired the services of the famed figure known as 'the Big Builder' namely Edifice K. Bulwark. Bulwark had created a structure that would be the world's first chemical skyscraper that could morph into different shapes with this being the Stagg Building. To make this into a reality, Stagg required the aid of Metamorpho but Rex Mason refused as he highlighted Bulwark's reputation in the newspaper. Thus, he departed and wanted no part in the projec with this infuriating Simon. Edifice threatened to walk away from the project but Stagg then decided that the solution was to create another Element Man. Using the Orb of Ra, he conducted an experiment to create another being like Metamorpho with Edifice K. Bulwark volunteering for the role. It was ultimately a success and he became another Element Man as he became Metamorpho II. Edifice then made the chemical skyscraper but use its morphing nature to destroy the structures built by his rivals as he went rogue. This led to the real Metamorpho arriving on the scene where he battled his counterpart in a lengthy battle as the pair shifted into various elements. Ultimately, Rex Mason was victorious and it was revealed that the artificial transformation of Bulwark was temporary as he returned to normal whereupon he was arrested by the authorities. (Metamorpho v1 #5)

Beowulf Stagg died and left a will asking his brother Simon to care for his son Randall Stagg. At some point afterwards, a group of spies approached Randall where they used hypnosis to turn him into their agent and wanted him to steal the secrets of Stagg. The boy met his uncle and was taken in where his conditioning triggered causing him to secretly take copies of any formula or other secrets that were to be sent to his handlers. (Action Comics v1 #417)

During the wedding, Sapphire came to be kidnapped by Simon's old foe Max Tremaine. This resulted in Stagg and Metamorpho working together with the Outsiders to save Sapphire. This ultimately led to Tremaine being killed by his own hand. The recent caused Metamorpho to nearly cancel the wedding but Simon convinced him otherwise leading to the couple marrying with Stagg's blessing. (Batman and the Outsiders Annual v1 #2)

Afterwards, Stagg personally headed the company's efforts at claiming the resources in the Northern Sahara region where he intended to use the underground reservoir at the Transboundary Aquifer System as a dumping ground for toxic chemicals. Stagg Enterprises then claimed that they were purifying the water but were attempting to secure an advantage in the resource war against other companies looking to enact similar initiatives. To get an advantage over the others, Simon Stagg personally brought in the Orb of Ra but this was stolen from him by the witch Halcyon who intended to evict all outsiders that were polluting the area. Simon and his men were then held hostage by her but were freed when Metamorpo along with the new Aquaman rescued him. Metamorpho then decided that the Orb of Ra was too dangerous for anyone to use and destroyed it despite Stagg's efforts at stopping him as he was thwarted by the witch Hadya. (Outsiders: Five of a Kind - Metamorpho/Aquaman v1 #1)

At some point, Simon Stagg entered into a partnership with Joshua Turnbull where the Illumination was constructed to look for alternative fuel sources. During the Blackest Night, a black Power Ring crashed onto the site though it was contained by the efforts of the Ray Ray Terrill. Stagg learnt that the rings could revive the dead but believed that alternative applications could be applied through it and sought to study it. However, the facility was attacked by a horde of undead Black Lantern Corpsmen when black rings revived the graves surrounding the area. (Weird Western Tales v1 #71)

Post-Flashpoint

Following the Flashpoint, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events. He had a daughter named Sapphire Stag and a son named Sebastian Stagg where both of his children stayed at his manor. One day, Simon was left hospitalised but made a full recovery where he learnt that he had been poisoned by his son Sebastian. This led to him banishing his son from the household and disowning him where Simon claimed that he only had a daughter from that point onwards. Sebastian was sent to a boarding school in Gotham City where he was forced to fend for himself. (The Terrifics v1 #29)

He was the head of Stagg Energy and Technology where he employed Rex Mason on a number of ventures. Simon's scientists discovered a strange energy reading from a remote region of Egypt and dispatched Mason to investigate where he encountered the Orb of Ra that transformed him into Metamorpho. Stagg had Metamorpho returned to his corporate headquarters for research and study where he kept Mason under control through the Orb as he sought the energy applications of the technology. (Legends of Tomorrow v1 #1)

Notes

  • In Back Issue! v1 #91, Mark Waid commented on the character when writing the Metamorpho series, "writing Simon Stagg was always a tightrope walk. On the one hand, you don't want him to be so comically evil that he's a cartoon. On the other hand, you have to remember that he's an absolute creep. The key to Stagg is not losing sight of the fact that he does most everything he does for the sake of his daughter, regardless of how insane those actions may look to us".
