[[Image:Archmages_Lair.jpg|thumb|320px|The monolith beneath the Archmage's Lair.]] The '''Archmage's Lair''' was a locale within a cave some distance from [[Castle Wyvern]]. Its walls were covered in strange hieroglyph-like markings, including images of humans slaying gargoyles. The most notable object in the cave was a strange, monolithic structure situated within the deepest part of the cave, a source of great mystical power. The [[Archmage (Gargoyles)|Archmage]] made this his home after his exile from Castle Wyvern in [[984]], and confronted [[Goliath (Gargoyles)|Goliath]], and the [[Gargoyles (Gargoyles)|gargoyles]] who would become known as [[Hudson]] and [[Demona]] there when they came to retrieve the ''[[Grimorum Arcanorum]]''. It was also here that he fell to his then-apparent demise. Ten years later, [[Hakon]]'s band of Vikings made their camp around the mouth of the cave. When Hakon and the [[Captain of the Guard]] fell to their death, their spirits were bound to the monolith beneath the Lair. They haunted the cave (and probably Castle Wyvern, too) for the next 1001 years. In [[1995]], the [[Avalon (Gargoyles)|Avalon]] travellers came to Wyvern, and the [[Ghost|ghosts]] of Hakon and the Captain used the power of the monolith to give Goliath nightmarish hallucinations. They used these to lure him (and the rest of the group) into entering the Lair. As they went deeper and deeper, their power over the gargoyle leader increased, until, at the monolith itself, they could drain his very life force away and into themselves. However, the Captain had a change of heart, and confronted Hakon to save Goliath. With its energies turned upon itself, the monolith was shattered. While the Captain, having atoned for his crimes and eased his guilt, could pass on, Hakon remained trapped and powerless. However, Hakon was able to call his descendant, [[Wolf (Gargoyles)|Wolf]], to him, and had the [[Mutates (Gargoyles)|mutate]] take the ghost out of the cave with a Viking battle-axe as his new vessel. The Archmage's Lair is now empty and seemingly void of power, but only time will tell if its tale has truly ended.
