He and his partner [[Fred Storr]] were patrolling Wharton's Swamp, searching for the missing [[Henry Hossing]], who they believed had murdered [[Rupert Barnaby]] and [[Jason Bukmeist]], who were also missing. The two however soon encountered the real killer, a monstrous mantle of [[Slime|black slime]]. Matson fired at the creature with his rifle, but this failed to harm the creature, which enveloped him. As a horrified Storr watched, Patrolman Matson was completely consumed by the monster. He was the slime's fourth and final human victim.
