The school was actually a cover where Professor Xavier could train a team of young Mutants in order to fight for the dream of peaceful racial co-existence. The team operated from the shadows to combat threats posed by evil Mutants who used their abilities against mankind. Jean Grey would be the last member of the team who joined fellow students codenamed [[Cyclops (Marvel)|Cyclops]], [[Iceman (Marvel)|Iceman]], [[Angel (Marvel)|Angel]] and [[Beast (Marvel)|Beast]]. Upon joining the team, Jean was also given her own codename which was Marvel Girl. (X-Men v1 #1) Jean stopped going by her codename Marvel Girl, preferring her real name, Jean Grey.
