It was actually a living organism as it was alive and had a parasitic nature. Stuff was capable of being eaten where it had a sweet yet addictive taste. However, it had a much more sinister effect as once consumed it began to gradually take over the brain where it mutated those that ate it turning them into bizarre zombie-like creatures.
