'''Thane Krios''' is a male extraterrestrial character who features in [[Mass Effect]]. ==Biography== Thane Krios was a male [[Drell (Mass Effect)|Drell]] born in the year [[2146]]. When he was 6 years old, his parents gave him to the [[Hanar (Mass Effect)|Hanar]] to be trained as an assassin as per the '''Compact''' between their species. Following his training, he was deployed on his first assignment where he made his first kill when he was 12 years old. During an assassination, he came to meet '''Irikah''' when she noticed the targeting laser on Thane's target and stepped in to block his shot. Thane came to be intrigued at a civilian putting her life in danger to save a complete stranger. This memory came to 'possess' him to the point where he was compelled to seek out Irikah. The two eventually came to fall in love and got married with Irikah becoming his wife. The Hanar came to release Thane from the compact allowing him to have a family. However, he had no other skills and decided to become a freelance assassin. In the mean time, Irikah gave birth to their son who was named '''Kolyat'''. Thane came to work hard but found it difficult to keep his life as an assassin and that of his family separate. Unfortunately, being an assassin meant that Thane spent a lot of his time away from home, too much in fact, slowly growing apart from his family. Some time after Kolyat was 10 years old, Irikah was murdered in revenge for a [[Batarians (Mass Effect)|batarian]] mercenary leader whom Thane had killed. The mercenaries paid the Shadow Broker for his identity and killed Thane's wife because they were unwilling to face Thane himself. Thane traveled back to Kahje for Irikah's funeral and left Kolyat in the care of his aunts and uncles whilst he hunted down his wife's killers. Thane finished the job, killing everyone involved in his wife's murder. Thane notes that while he has always striven to kill his targets as quickly and cleanly as possible, he took extra time with them. He claims these murders are the only ones where he made the decision that they should be killed, and the only time emotions have affected his actions. Commander Shepard first encounters Thane on Illium, where he had been based for the past two years, on a mission to assassinate Nassana Dantius. While Shepard talks with Nassana to discern the assassin's whereabouts, Thane drops from the ceiling and takes out Nassana's bodyguards before killing her with a pistol shot at point-blank range. Afterward he prays for himself. During later conversations with him, Thane tells Shepard that he hoped this mission would be his last, expecting that he would have been killed by Nassana's guards. He reveals he is slowly dying of a disease which is later revealed to be Kepral's Syndrome. He joins Shepard's suicide mission against the Collectors, perhaps hoping to die in the process, which he feels will redeem him from his past evils. Shepard and team later travel to the Citadel to stop Kolyat from following in his father's footsteps and taking up the career of assassination. Kolyat's contracted target is a racist turian politician who extorts human rackets while promising to reduce crime in the Citadel Wards. Shepard will stop Kolyat from performing the assassination if the mission of successful (and may even kill the target personally if Shepard is Renegade). Thane then talks to his son and makes things right with him. If the mission is completed, Thane will become a loyal member of Shepard's team. Shepard sees Thane still exercising despite his condition. He explains he's only doing it because he likes it, not to stave off the end stages of the disease. However, if asked to be recruited, he will refuse, reasoning Shepard needs the best and his condition prevents him from performing. His condition now requires daily medical treatment, and that would be impossible aboard the Normandy. If Shepard insists, his answer depends on whether Shepard helped him reconnect with Kolyat. If that happened, Thane is already at peace with his life and thinks it's his time to rest from war and conflict. If not, he still has family matters to resolve. Kolyat has become self-destructive. In light of the uncertainty of the Reaper war, Thane wants to ensure that if Kolyat dies he at least knows his father loved him. If asked how much time he has left, Thane notes his doctors all gave him a terminal prognosis, and his favorite gave him three months to live nine months ago. If his loyalty was secured, he finds having no responsibilities or fears a good end to a life. If not, he spends his time contemplating his deeds. Thane has met Shepard's injured friend Ashley or Kaidan during their mutual stay at the hospital. He notes that Ashley will be starting physical therapy in his class soon, or he pegs Kaidan as an honorable biotic. When Shepard states they're there to visit that friend, Thane pledges to put them under his protection while they were in the hospital. At the conclusion of their meeting, Shepard wishes the best for Thane. If his loyalty was secured, Thane doesn't want Shepard to grieve for him. He has good doctors, Kolyat visits regularly, and he hopes he and Shepard keep up regular correspondence via the extranet. If not, Thane prays for the best and simply appreciates Shepard's sentiment. Thane is the one to first alert Shepard that something is amiss on the Citadel after the genophage cure has been dealt with. The Citadel is under attack from Cerberus and they're in control of the docks. Thane managed to elude them at the hospital, and he suspects that C-Sec headquarters may have been compromised. Shepard patches him in on the comm as the Commander lands on the Citadel to deal with the problem. ==Overview== ===Personality and attributes=== In appearance, Thane Krios Despite his profession, Thane was a deeply spiritual man who prays for success in his missions. Thane asks for forgiveness after each kill, even going as far as to ignore those in his immediate vicinity until he is finished doing so. Thane is unusual among drell in that he follows the old polytheistic religion of his species rather than adopting those of the hanar or asari and spends much of his time in prayer and meditation, even within his work. To find a target, he prays to Amonkira, the lord of hunters; when defending another, he prays to Arashu, goddess of motherhood and protection; after taking a life, he prays to Kalahira, goddess of oceans and the afterlife. He explained that the body and soul are seen as separate entities by his faith. Thane sees his body as merely a tool or vessel through which people can choose to commit an act of murder, similar to a gun. While this philosophy spiritually absolves him of his crimes, that convenience was undermined by the eidetic memory native to his species; the ability to perfectly recall every single act of murder he committed over the years has weighed down on his conscience, thus Thane cannot help but to feel regret over his actions. This guilt, combined with an impending death, compels Thane to join Shepard's campaign against the Collectors as a gesture of penance. He remarked that he barely spoke to anyone outside his family. He is solitary by nature and has few activities apart from work and reading, leading him to observe that there will be no one to mourn him when he dies. He appreciates the talks as he considers Shepard the only friend he's made in ten years. Thane during an assassination mission came to meet his future wife '''Irikah'''. He was compelled to do so when she had attempted to protect a person from Thane and putting her own life at risk. Eventually seeking her out, the two eventually fell in love and came to make a family together. Irikah gave birth to the couple's son who they named '''Kolyat'''. Thane's life as a freelance assassin would lead to him slowly growing part from his family as he spent more and more time away from them. Ultimately, Irikah was killed by Batarian mercenaries seeking revenge for a kill Thane had performed. In response, Thane came to hunt them down and kill them in order to avenge her. He would though leave his son with his uncles and aunts who were responsible for raising Kolyat. ===Powers and abilities=== A trait of his species was an eidetic memory allowing him to perfectly recall every single event he had seen. This led to him being rumored to be the most skilled in the galaxy.
